Tithe in LDS. Friend worried

I have a friend that is 91 years old and LDS. She has a limited income, and is having problems paying the Tithe she was told she had to pay. $150 a month. She went to her “bishop” and asked if it could somehow be lowered, and was told absolutely NOT! She is now worried that if she does not come up with the money every month, she will be in severe trouble. I think this is really sad for her.
 
There was a case on the news here last year about a lady in her late 70s or 80s who was sent a letter by her Protestant (can’t remember the denomination but it wasn’t LDS) church that they had noticed she was not contributing money to them and therefore she was no longer considered a church member. The implication was “and don’t come back”. She had been a member for years and was naturally upset. I’m glad Catholics don’t do this.
 
Can you help drive her to a food bank? This is absolutely terrible it’s happening, but perhaps you can ease her burden.
 
We don’t live in the same place. She is currently in an extended living home 450 miles away.
 
Who would she be in trouble with? God? I doubt it. The LDS Church? Really? The leaders of which get healthy “stipends” and “living expenses” that don’t qualify as income or increase, so they pay nothing. Yeah, I’d really be worried if I were her.
 
God knows her faith…and the LDS faith as well. She will be fine and should stop worrying
 
She is as she has been LDS all her life. Her gm, was one of eight wives, long ago.
 
God asks so little of us with keeping the commandments, including payment of tithing so why should she be any different? If she does this, she will be blessed.
 
I don’t know if it’s the same one you’re thinking of, but there was a 92-year-old woman in Georgia who had been kicked out of the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, GA, for not being physically and financially active, after having been part of the community for over 50 years. She had had health problems and had become a shut-in.

Greater Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church out of Tampa, FL, sends out collection notices to its members, saying, “You need to pay $1,000/year to be a member in good standing/have the right to vote.”

In the LDS Church there is a path for her to get assistance. First, she should do what she can to be self-reliant. If she is unable to pay for her own needs she should then approach her family for assistance. If resources from family are unavailable or have have been exhausted then she ought to go to the bishop and ask for financial assistance from the fast offerings. I’ve been taught that if you don’t have enough to pay tithing and bills, then pay tithing and seek assistance from the church. LDS believe that tithing is the Lord’s money, so it’s inappropriate to spent it on your own needs.

Also, if she is in a financial bind she ought to be communicating her need to her home teacher and visiting teacher. These members in her congregation have a stewardship over her and should be working with her to resolve issues she has. I hope this helps…
 
I think that 92-year-old woman from Georgia might have been the one I saw. It made the news in a bunch of states far from Georgia. It’s just sad that people would send that to an older person instead of maybe looking into why they were not contributing, and going to visit them and talk to them. It’s not like a shut-in is going to be taking up church resources like eating the food at their Sunday get-togethers, either.
 
Read your Bible ---- I thought Catholics understood tithing — paying 10% of one’s income to the church – or is the collection plate and the I lost count numerous ways to support the church.

That is the commandment. Biblical or have Catholics completely lost all knowledge of things biblical.

It’s “biblical” to scare an elderly lady because she didn’t pay some large amount of money to your Church?
I don’t think Jesus would approve.
You can think what you like.
 
We’ve read about it, of course. As you must be aware, our Church did, after all, compile and canonize the Scriptures. What we’re asking is why you believe it’s something that still applies. Does the LDS require its members to have a parapet on their rooftops?
 
It down to faith and keeping the commandment ---- not scaring anyone.
