I spoke with my priest and he has agreed that if I by the GF hosts it would be acceptable. I bring a GF communion wafer with me each Sunday and drop it in the bowl. It is then brought up during the offeratory and consecrated. It physically looks different so my priest is able to keep track of it. I then have to receive from him. There are three parishoners that now partake in this manner. You can by from Energ Foods @www.ener-g.com Speak to your priest first as not all parishes are able to accommodate. When my Priest is on vacation I do not receive since it’s too difficult to coordinate.
The hosts from Energ Foods are gluten free. These are not valid for Catholic Communion. Your Priest should not allow this.

The only hosts allowed are low gluten. They are made by the Benedictine Sisters.

Ten years ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I am a daily communicant. I made up my mind when I was diagnosed that I would continue receiving Holy Communion because though in the form of a host, I am receiving Christ and He cannot be toxic to me. If necessary, He would perform a miracle for me just because I believe He would. Perhaps I do not have as serious a form of the disease as others, but, nonetheless, my faith is such that I believe I have been rewarded. I have had no painful reactions in 10 years and even if I did, I still wouldn’t stop. Christ suffered much just so that I could receive him in this humble form.

Jesus said:“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him.”

Also, I want to add, that I trust my Priest, and if he says its better for me not to recieve then I trust him. He is probably right.
I normally don’t go anywhere near gluten. I don’t eat out. I don’t eat processed food. There is almost no gluten in my house (except what hubby smuggles in).
So for me to be using vessels that are not washed that have residual gluten is totally inappropriate for my illness.
The Priest would have to have a seperate chalice for me, it would have to be cleaned with soap and water. He would have to pour straight into it. (I would have to make sure that brand of wine was 100% gluten free, some aren’t). Then he would have to put that chalice aside, so that when he breaks the host particles do not go flying into the chalice…

I mean, what Priest would really want to go through all of that?
I receive from a separate chalice. I see no reason why you cannot be accommodated.

Ummm, yes the Host is Christ but the Host still maintains the accidents of bread (in other words, our bodies still identify gluten when we receive Him). That’s nice you’ve experienced no ill effects (yet), but receiving only from the cup is not a matter of faith. It’s perfectly acceptable to opt to only receive from the chalice and theologically sound (after all, Christ is fully present in both species so we are not receiving any “less” of Christ than one who receives the Host).

Shouldn’t it be consecrated in a different bowl as traces of gluten from the other hosts can be transferred to the low glutten host if in the same bowl.

Yes. My priest uses a different pyx.

He opens it for the consecration, closes it until someone approaches him to receive and then opens it again.

It really is a pain for him. But he understands the importance of receiving.
