Hello all! I hope this finds you in the graces of our Lord.

I know this topic has been heavily discussed in the past, but here goes another post on it.

I currently use the MTF Daily Roman Missal for NO, but as I continue to go to TLM more frequently, I think it’s time I purchase a hand missal instead of using the booklet.

I know that Angelus Press has one without an Imprimatur due to their association with SSPX. It does however seem to be the most common and popular.

Baronius Press also has one, and the Fr. Lasance one is another common one I see around.

I like the format of the MTF, and the extraordinary amount of extras in the back including basic prayers, litanies, special devotions and explanations, etc.

I know that the Angelus Press one looks decent, seems to have a small number of extras, but has the Latin in smaller print compared to the English which is a little weird…

Can any of you recommend one that is similar to the MTF one, but for the TLM?

May the peace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Forgot to add the following: the TLM by me uses the 1962, but I see that a few prefer the 1945 Missal instead. I feel it only makes sense to buy a 1962 since it’s what my chapel uses…

I don’t think it looks smaller. I recommend the Angelus Press one.

I prefer the Baronius Press Missal. Here is what to look up in Amazon. It has several great prayers and additions that are helpful for daily catholic living.

The Roman Missal, 1962 (English and Latin Edition)

I also prefer the Baronius Press missal. The pages are a bit thicker than the ones in the Angelus Press missal so there is less bleed-thru of text from the other side.

The Angelus Press Missal does have more descriptions of what the priest is doing during Mass.

The ribbons in the Baronius Press missal fray easily. I recommend painting the ribbon ends with clear nail polish or very briefly passing them thru a flame from a lighter to seal the ends.

I have several friends who love the Fr. Lasance missal. It is quite a bit thicker than the other two. The people who use this one like it because the Latin and English text is on the same page in two columns vs. the other two which have the Latin and English on opposing pages.

I use the Lasance missal myself, and I wouldn’t be without it. I’m not familiar with this MTF missal you mention.

Here is a good price on one:

Baronius Press
The Baronius Press and Angelus Press missals are both based on the same Marian Missal.

From what I hear, the Angelus Press missal has commentary in the margins to help teach what’s going on

For many, the Angelus Press missal is the best.

However, for those who don’t want to support Angelus Press, the Baronius Press version is very good too.

I have the Baronius Press version. But the Angelus Press one is actually a little lighter.

Angelus Press has 5 ribbons
Baronius Press has 6 ribbons

Here is quick video about the Angelus Press missal:

I have all three.

I enjoy the Angelus Press version the most, more extensive in pre & post communion prayers (Thomas Aquinas, etc.) and Stations of the Cross, Litanies, Long version of the St. Michael Prayer, Examen, etc…

Baronius, better paper, missing many of these prayers. Best cover, real leather and a carry box/sleeve.

Fr Lasance newest print in Feb 2020, thicker pages for following the Mass in the middle of the book. However the worst quality typeset, the plates are obviously old, missing ink on many words, so you have to look close, margins are cropped short on many pages, so the edges of letters are chopped off. Fewer prayers than the Angelus Press. I am still trying all three trying to find my final Everyday Carry. I want to use the Fr L (1945) because I attend an ICKSP Mass and they are pre-1955 as I understand, so some is missing in all of the 1962 Missals.

I also have the Edmund Campion, it is the best quality by far with beautiful EVERYTHING. Paper, Print, Color Photos of Priests in the act of the Mass. Unfortunately, it is ONLY a Sunday Missal, no Feasts or Daily mass readings. I recommend this for learning the TLM though, it will help you learn the order of the Mass, Chants and Hymns that are included in the back. $35.00 while all of the others are $70+ including shipping/handling.
So, find out what order your priests are from, what do they recommend? We have people at our parish that carry two and flip back and forth depending on where we are in the Mass. I don’t recommend this. Also, not mentioned are the St. Andrew and St. Joseph Missals which I understand are very good. I think they are both pre-1955, I don’t have any other (name removed by moderator)ut on them though.

Good Luck! God Bless. Avoid the Novus Ordo abuses.

Thanks for your thorough post.

I ended up ordering the Angelus Press one in leather which has recently been re-released in a limited quantity on their website. So I’m going to snatch one instead of the non-leather variant.

The Priests who hold TLM in my area are all Jesuits (except for one) and then there are 2 SSPX Chapels which I’ve never attended, and they all follow the 1962 rubrics. .

Angelus press is by far the best quality missal out. It will last you a long time, it is easy to open, and the prayers in the front and back are the best from any missal.

As far as content goes, the Fr Lasance is the best. It has pictures and is a very large missal.

I do not at all recommend the Baronious Press missal. I recommend everything else Baronious, but their missals are very sub par in both quality and in content. The ribbons will fray, the gold comes off, and the content is lacking compared to the other two.

If you want a pocket sized missal / prayer book that has the Sunday prayers in English (just not the rest of the propers) and that has a lot of unique content, I highly recommend the Blessed Be God prayer book.

Which Baronius Press missal did you have? The Summorum Pontificum version of the missal is a lot better than the original version of their missal.

I’ve had mine for a year already now, and it’s still in great condition.

BTW - in regards to the ribbons, the type of ribbon used in the Baronius Press missal should have their ends dipped in wax.

Light a wide candle, let it melt a little and then dip the end of the ribbons in the wax. Then, they will last a long time without fraying. If/when the wax comes off, re-dip in wax.

Or use some clear fingernail polish. That’s what I did with mine. Works great! I feel like the wax would come off faster?

That, I can’t say for sure. I have the Baronius Press Breviary set, and it works great on their ribbons though.

Will do this soon then… they seem to be the same as my NO Missal and my Breviaries which are in great condition, but will do it to all of them as a preventative measure.
Will do a little over half an inch at the end of each ribbon.

The one I have is fairly old. I know someone who got a new one and the cover was detached from the spine. One should not have to dip ribbons wax etc so they do not fray, but I will give you that sounds like a really good idea. Those are honestly just symptoms of the poor Baronious quality in this case.

Most important though imo is the content, and Baronious is definitely last place in that regard. Again I am otherwise a fan of all Baronious publishes, just not their missals.

I can say that the exterior vinyl on the Angelus Press one is not the best either. I’m waiting for the leather one to arrive in the mail which I assume will be much better than this vinyl binding.

You’ll have to tell me how the leather is by comparison. I would have bought the leather one had it been available at the time.
