Hmm. I always understood that the Institute was granted these churches in a way similar to religious…i.e, that there was autonomy for them, and they could not be replaced by the bishop so readily. Of course, the letter does no go into specifics, but it does make me think, at the very least. I attend at an institute Oratory in St. Louis, and have become quite fond of the Canons and their brand of spiritual insight in homilies.

BTW, the image posted above is from St. Mary’s in Cashton’s website. It is currently on there, from the August 4th, 2013 bulletin for the three catholic churches in Cashton. I just took a screenshot of the relevant pages.

You can find the whole PDF of the bulletin here: smash3p.org/news/bulletin

If the way I read it is correct, this is great! A personal parish for the Extraordinary Form served by diocesan priests!! This just gives the ICKSP more opportunity to expand devotion to the Mass of Ages.

The Institute, the FSSP et al were meant simply to continue to hand on the liturgical traditions together with increasing fidelity to the Holy See. We’re still far from seeing a balance between the two rites, but there appears to be greater understanding that the value of the older rite is not simply to service a fragment of the faithful.

I guess I didn’t take it as positively when I heard the pastor supposedly had no involvement with the TLM community, or the Canons at all. However, if in fact there are priests who can offer the mass in the diocese, then that is in fact a good thing!

That is the way it’s been offered here in Detroit. There are at least 5 parishes that offer the EF Mass at least weekly; with one offering it almost exclusively, all of them are staffed by diocesan priests.

If it is, in fact, designated as a “personal” parish (and I’ve no knowledge of the situation), this development can be seen as a positive thing. The integrity of the “personal parish” is maintained, and it frees some members of the ICRSS to serve elsewhere. OTOH, if it’s a standard “territorial” parish, the news would seem to be less favorable.

When religious orders are given permission to create a chapter house, foundation, monastery, convent etc… the permission is very hard to revoke, as they obtain and control property separately from the diocese.

But when they are given operation of a parish, the property is diocesan, and the bishop may do with it what he pleases.

glad to see some positive responses. i sometimes feel like the whole tlm vs no is like having a schism in the church itself the way some people go about it
