I will be happy to take my husband’s last name when i get married. Then my name will probably fit in forms. And my initials won’t also be the name of late night comedy show.
Then why shouldn’t the woman take the husband’s FIRST name as well? Or the husband the wife’s surname instead, if he’s the one doing the clinging as you say? That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one body…
If the man is doing the clinging, so should the woman. They belong to each other…they become one. Shouldn’t their names be one as well?
IMHO.![]()
Actually I believe there have been times and places where Maria Smith’s legal name became “Mrs. John Gomez” when she married John Gomez. It didn’t become Mary Gomez. Social conventions are constantly changing. Then why shouldn’t the woman take the husband’s FIRST name as well? Or the husband the wife’s surname instead, if he’s the one doing the clinging as you say?![]()
What if your wife wouldn’t dream of not taking your last name? What if was an honor for her to do so?I actually have strong feelings about it. I’m a guy, not married, and I firmly belive that women should NOT change their last name when they get married. You have one name, keep it. As a guy, if anyone told me to change my name, I’d be deeply insulted.
Why should my future wife do something I wouldn’t dream of doing?
I know it’s not a popular view.
And no, the church doesn’t have a teaching on it. Why would they?
They’re both doing the clinging. Then why shouldn’t the woman take the husband’s FIRST name as well? Or the husband the wife’s surname instead, if he’s the one doing the clinging as you say?![]()
Hehehehe, actually to this day my mother’s credit card still says Mrs. D. Last Name. Then why shouldn’t the woman take the husband’s FIRST name as well? Or the husband the wife’s surname instead, if he’s the one doing the clinging as you say?![]()
How does that work after a few generations? For example if your name is Mary Smith and you marry Bob Jones your kids become Jane Smith Jones and David Smith Jones? Then what happens when Jane marries John Akers? Do their kids became John Jr Smith Jones Akers? Or do they grab just one of mom’s last names to become John Jr Smith Akers? My husband and I are both born in Puerto Rico. In PR changing your last name was not an issue. No body did it. The wife keeps her and the husband keep his. Children born into the marriage have both last names and that was it. The problem came up when we moved to the US. We have had to make so many explanations as of why I haven’t change my last name. When my kids where born I put down my husband last name on their certificate because they where born in the US. If they would have been born in PR they would have both last names as it is common there. I didn’t want to give them trouble having to hyphenate their last names and explain as much as I have to explain!
My husband was the same, and for the same reasons. I didn’t have any issue with taking his last name fortunately. His last name is shared by one of the “Big 5” New York Italian Mafia families so my name is much more intimidating now than my boring old Scottish maiden name… LOLMy husband was pretty adament that I take his last name upon marrying him. His reasons were that having a single last name for us and our kids would make a more cohesive unit, that in his experience women with hypenated last names were not the type of women that he wanted me to be (i.e., more concerned about feminism, having ‘equal’ status with a man, etc than being a good wife and mother and recognizing that men and women are different and therefore are better and worse at different things), and lastly because he was proud of his name and wanted me to demonstrate how proud I was to take on him and his name.
