Well since this thread began with Sen. Durbin’s comments, let’s take an example from that. Here was Karl Rove’s response:Please give me any quote from a Republican politician where they referred to a Democrat (or Democrats) as traiters for criticizing the administration.
Karl Rove:
As Kevin Drum noted in his blog (I feel a bit embarrassed to be citing a blog, but it’s a fairly moderate and responsible one, which counts for something – anyway, here’s the link: washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2005_06/006577.php), Rove here has gone beyond merely denigrating Democrats and expressing anger at Durbin’s comments to actually implying that Durbin’s *motivations *were to put American troops in danger. He is, in essence, accusing Durbin of treason. Now, I’m not calling for Rove’s resignation or anything equally silly, but I do put this forward as an example of over the top rhetoric. Durbin’s reference to Nazis was unfortunate, but treason? Surely we have enough faith in America and in democracy that we don’t need to start questioning the patriotism of our political opponents.Let me just put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts the words of Senator Durbin to the Mideast, certainly putting our troops in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals.
