Today we celebrate the birth of the Protestant Reformation, the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg church. Luthers objective was not to split the church or start a new movement, but to reform that which was already in place.

We seek to walk in that well worn path with a heart for reforming and rebuilding, not just dividing and tearing down. Remember our heritage today…it should be a special day for all of us in Protestant and Lutheran traditions.

A GREAT TALK ON THE LIVES OF REFORMERS

THE FIVE SOLAS OF THE REFORMATION

SOLI DEO GLORIA
TO GOD ALONE BE THE GLORY

“Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be held in awe above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. Ascribe to the LORD, O clans of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!””
(1Chronicles 16:23-31 ESV)

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”
(Romans 11:33-36 ESV)

SOLO CHRISTO
CHRIST ALONE

“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.””
(Acts 4:11-12 ESV)

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
(1Timothy 2:5-6 ESV)

SOLA SCRIPTURA
SCRIPTURE ALONE

“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.”
(Psalms 19:7-9 ESV)

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
(2Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

SOLA FIDE
FAITH ALONE

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
(Romans 5:1-2 ESV)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)

SOLA GRATIA
GRACE ALONE

“he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
(Titus 3:5-7 ESV)

“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.”
(Romans 5:15 ESV)

Oh Happy Day!!! :extrahappy: :dancing: :extrahappy:

Surely one of the saddest days in the history of humankind, when millions upon millions have been lead astray from the one true catholic church 😦

But I will raise a glass to the future posibility of the splintered church rejoining to Rome is Holy Union and Obedience 👍

:extrahappy: :extrahappy: :extrahappy: :extrahappy: :extrahappy:

I hear that posting a “thesis” on the door was the equivalent of egging someone’s house back in that period. It makes sense that the 150 kg (330 lb.) Luther would get so angry he would post 95 of 'em when no one gave him any candy at the Cathedral…:juggle:

For me the happiest Reformation Day will be the first one Lutheran and Catholics can once again share the Sacrament of the Altar together.

Thanks Jon!!! Unity is what we are praying at every single mass.
Celebration then will be triumphant.

Welcome to Catholic Answers Forums brother! 👍

Happy Reformation Day to you too! 🙂

My God give you the patience and grace to share the truth in love. Here is a word of encouragement:

2 Timothy 2:10

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

That’s not my understanding. My understanding is this was a regular practice, to spread a message or spark a dialogue, perhaps not unlike this board. Luther was, afterall, a theologian.
He was a Catholic monk, and professor in Wittenburg. It was his church. Your scenario implies he was egging his own house.

Having just attended (today) the annual Aquinas-Luther Conference at Lenoir-Rhyne University, I too will continue to pray for the day that we all gather at the table together – preferably here on Earth but I will wait, if necessary, for the heavenly banquet.

It was actually my failure at some halloween trick or treating humor…:imsorry:

I’ll 2nd that!

What does the Reformation mean to me? To quote a brilliant sketch from Monty Python:

“When Martin Luther nailed his protest up to the church door in fifteen-seventeen, he may not have realized the full significance of what he was doing, but four hundred years later, thanks to him, my dear, I can wear whatever I want on my John Thomas. I can go down the road any time I want and walk into Harry’s (pharmacy) and hold my head up high and say in a loud, steady voice, ‘Harry, I want you to sell me a condom. In fact, today, I think I’ll have a French Tickler, for I am a Protestant.’”😃

Yeah, the more Protestants use birth control, the less there’ll be of them!😃

Cheers!
