To singles--have you thought of this?

If you are looking for a Catholic wife/husband, have you thought of having a singles social within your age group, at your home? I noticed in the Sunday bulletin this past weekend, that a female parishioner was having a singles get together, asking people to bring a covered dish/appetizer, and just ‘hang out.’ I thought that was great–if I were single, that would be something I’d try.

I hate to admit though, in the world we live in, it might be a little scary to invite strangers into one’s home, especially a party given by a woman, as we just don’t know the true intent of some people, but I’d hope that Catholic parishioners would be safe!

Anyways–just curious if you have ever done anything like this, and if not…what do you think? I have seen quite a few threads on here about frustrated Catholic singles looking for ways to meet likeminded single people…and this might be a way?

Already part of a singles social group. Guys aren’t much in attendence at least in my age group and the ones that are are looking for younger ladies then me. 🤷 Funny thing they are a few years older then me only.

Wow I think that is a great idea except where… I would definitely schedule it at the parish center or in a public location like a park or beach or even a restaurant.

My parish singles’ club is for older singles in the parish, and the members are mostly widows. I can only think of one girl in my parish who is about my age, but we never really met and I think she’s spoken for anyway. The rest of the young people in my parish are in high school or younger.

I think it would be a good idea to host a singles’ outing, but it would be worth considering what sort of people will attend. The parish singles’ club tends to go to swankier places than my home, usually fine restaurants or boat trips or widow retreats.

Yeah, that is a good point Larowyn…I have attended small parishes before, older people mainly, and there, it most likely would fizzle out…but, I belong to a large parish now, and even if only 10 people showed up…it would be a fun way to meet likeminded people…and who knows, a potential spouse?

Blestone–I personally wouldn’t do my house either, if I were single…but I think maybe a restaurant, or park…where people can bring something, and it’s not so pricey as a restaurant either (or noisy) I really liked the idea…

I was thinking of starting a covered dish party for married folks like me…everyone else can bring the food though, since I’m not so fond of cooking.😛

They do something called “Theology on Tap” here. Each week the group meets at a bar and has a guest speaker. Usually it’s one of the priests or deacons but once the bishop showed up. The young adult group does potlucks and bowling but I think TOT gets more attendance.

The other thing is that the young adult group doesn’t say single or married - I think that may be a better arrangement. Instead of potentially looking for a date, it’s just a social function to make new friends. The only criteria is “18 to 35ish”.

Isn’t that something…well,I can’t talk much, my husband is nearly 11 years my senior, but he wasn’t ‘seeking out’ a younger woman. I wonder why that is, but the only thing that comes to mind, is if they want to have a large family…lots of kids or something…they might be looking for someone younger for that reason. I don’t know how young you are sierrah–so I’m just guessing!:o 🤷

Ok–I’m really glad you brought that last line up…because back in my parish in PA–they would have singles get togethers for 18 to 40…I was like, huh? Why would you mix such a wide age group like this? I am nearly 40, why would I want to hang out with 18 year old men and women? I mean, granted it’s not just for seeking out a spouse, I know that–but, it was implied that the group was for seeking out a potential spouse. And a lot of folks dated through there…so, I thought the age groups should have been 18 to 25, still wide disparity there too, because I was a vastly different person at 18 than at 25. And, then 26 through 40…at least, everyone is a mature adult…

That’s weird that you brought that up. ha:o

I’ve been thinking of subscribing to a Catholic personals website like CatholicMatch.com, but it’s expensive to do so. I learned the hard way that you can only send messages to other Catholics, and if a subscriber sends you a message you can’t read it until you subscribe.

I have heard folks on here post about…ugh, what’s the name…ah, Ave Maria singles? I think 1ke met her spouse on there? (forgive me if I’m missposting that 1ke) But, that might be a better one to check out?

If they did that at my parish and I went, I’d be the only man there under 30 and the older women would go after me.😊

We do a meet and greet covered dish dinner every year so the parishoners can get to know each other… they usually introduce any newbies and everyone gets to socialize. Last meet and greet the pastor was new and so was the principal of the parish school… and they just so happened to sit at our table with 3 teens… it turned out to be a hoot! The principal and the priest were getting the “low down” from the kids…

Ave Maria Singles is even more expensive; $60 a month for a minimum of three months. What if I sign up and I meet Ms. God Sent Her to Me the first week?

LOL–exactly…well, older women are often seeking men of their own age or a little older…some might choose younger, but I think men tend to choose younger than women, if compared.

I would totally try ave maria singles…you might end up so happy there.🙂

Hey, then you’ll be getting off cheap! 😃 I think the money aspect of it, keeps the immature people off of the site, and only those seeking a mature relationship with a Catholic…as opposed to match.com…whatever you do, don’t go there! My sister tried it, and she said she’s done with it.

I’m apparently a hot item among the parish ladies. It’s embarrassing to hear some of them tell my parents how handsome and intelligent I am and how lucky they are to have a son like me after Mass.

Aw–well, that is nice…They might not be looking at you as a ‘hot item,’ however…lol But, it’s good to hear compliments…I sure like them!😃

Yeah it really didn’t seem odd to me. The 18-24 year olds that show up are usually very mature and you don’t notice how young they are. The rest of the group mixes well, but it really depends on where they are in life. For example, someone who is 35 but recently single again might go, or a couple like us 27 & 31 but we don’t have any kids. My brother who’s 44 divorced with 3 kids would still fit in well because of his personality, as his best friend is 29. I think it’s self-limiting in that respect so there’s no need to put a firm age limit. If you show up you’ll know if you’ve aged out.

No, not really, I haven’t. I could probably come up with an idea of doing that among friends for even this very specific reason, but I wouldn’t probably disclose the idea even if I actually came through with it. I suppose it’d feel artificial to me, such a pressure-laden gathering.

No pressure–just could be an ongoing thing…like maybe a movie night…or then a potluck night. From the looks of the ‘ad’ in the bulletin about this, the parishioner implied that this was an ongoing thing…so, you could also make some good friendships too with both women and men.
