Wow Lou. That is something I never considered. I do say things like that frequently now that I think about it. And yes, the people who are closer to me (girlfriend, best friend, brother) do correct me often. Or, at least, they try to and I don’t pick up on it (see…oblivious).

So the frequency in which I say it may be leading others to wonder if _______, is that a fair summary of what you shared Lou?
Yes, I think the frequency in which you say these kinds of things leads others to think maybe you agree with gender stereotypes, or something along those lines.

Obliviousness, especially when you talk to friends and family, people you can relax with, is really easy to fall into. I learn things about how I communicate, and when I tell my friends/family, they’re always surprised I never noticed before 😆 .

Perhaps from your perspective, your friends/family/girlfriend are people you can relax and joke around with, and when you say these things, you assume they know you well enough to know you’re not serious. But from theirs, if you’re saying these things often, they start to wonder whether it is just a joke. Perhaps they’re also concerned how it may come across to people who don’t know you so well/are more easily offended.

Everyone could be more careful about how they word things sometimes,
But some people are more easily offended than others.
Everyone who knows how to drive should know how to change a tire and check the oil not just men.
I found that all the men I ever dated who didn’t know how to change a tire or check the oil or jump start a car just wernt the right guy for me ( majority of them didn’t even own a hammer or screw driver let alone a power tool) they also didn’t know how to mow the lawns
And who said power tools were only for men ( the ammount of times I’ve needed my drill has been amazing it is now stuffed it’s served me well and lasted me a few years and was second hand when I got it it’s ok beacuse hubby has more than one drill )

This is such a revelation for me. Truly. I think this is it! I honestly think this hits it right on the nail. If I could buy you a meal I will. Thank you!

I always say that everyone should know how to cook even if it’s basic. It’s an important life skill.
Indeed.

But for some reason, my wife and the fire department conspire against me . . .

😱😲
It is a well kept secret that most men aren’t oblivious at all and only pretend to be oblivious.
Well kept primarily by most of us not noticing . . .

😜🤣
As a woman who owns power tools,I don’t find what you said offensive at all.
My oldest daughter loves them, two, almost as obsessive a I. I don’t think I’ve managed to teach the other three the right end of a screwdriver . . .
