EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy may have to make a decision between his job as a lawmaker and his membership, “his authentic membership,” in the Roman Catholic Church, Rhode Island’s Catholic bishop said Tuesday morning.

Full Story

He might be right…This isn’t a democracy it is a religion…everyone doesn’t get to vote on what they wish to obey

Christ said enter by the narrow path for the road to destruction is wide…better he go than lead others astray by bad example

I admire Bishop Tobin for standing up to these ‘Catholics’. I hope that more Bishops will follow in his foot steps.

Catholicism is a package deal; you must accept all of her teachings or call yourself something else. By the way, Mr. Kennedy, it is the Bishop’s responsibility to teach Congressmen from Rhode Island; it is not the Congressmen’s job to teach the Bishop.

AMEN!

Apparently Chris Matthew’s also thinks it’s his job too. :banghead:

Precisely.

There are lots of lawmakers who are pro-life and actually vote according to their faith, though they may not give it as the reason. I think the Kennedys are so married to abortion they cannot separate themselves. Their faith is their belief in politics, not God’s word.

I’m glad Bishop Tobin is speaking out and putting his foot down. Hopefully this is the tip of the iceberg and more of the Church leadership follow suit in shepherding its flock.

Grilling one of our shepherds? Seriously??
This guy is supposed to be Catholic and he’s mocked the invocation of God in public.

Chris Matthews might be one of those “tares” being sown within our Church, that Jesus has talked about.

His attitude has been pretty off-putting to me whenever he pokes his nose and chimes in on matters of faith in the political realm.

Well good for Bishop Tobin. It’s awesome that we’re finally barring these politicians from Communion. I wonder when Pelosi will be barred.

I think this quote is appropriate:
“Better that only a few Catholics should be left, staunch and sincere in their religion, than that they should, remaining many, desire as it were, to be in collusion with the Church’s enemies and in conformity with the open foes of our faith.” ~ St. Peter Canisius
I think we are at a point in history where the chaff must be separated from the wheat.

I think we will see more and more of this sort of thing as the Pope appoints faithful bishops with something the older generation of bishops lacked…spines! Bishop Tobin is an excellent example of what I’m talking about.

When the group of young priests who have been ordained in the last decade or two come up for the episcopacy, we will really be strengthened! I can’t wait. 🙂

When Kennedy called out the bishops it was appropriate for B. Tobin to respond. But, now that he has been on Hardball and I see where has been on a Rhode Island radio station I’m starting to think that it may be more about attention than teaching. There is starting to be a note of vainglory in the bishop’s actions.

Huh?

The bishop has a confidential meeting; Kennedy goes to MSM and wails about the inhumanity of it all; the bishop sees an opportunity to instruct at least some wobbly catholics as to tenets of faith…kinda sounds like brave prelates before him…to go into the belly of the beast to bring truth.

On that note, happy feast day to St Andrew Dung-Lac (bishop) and the Vietnamese martyrs for refusing to give up their faith to political pressure .

Maggie,

You may have a point. It just bothers me that he is giving this Kennedy jerk more attention than he deserves. Catholics are cursed with the Kennedy name. Why do these Kennedy’s keep insisting that they are Catholic. They are pro abortion, pro same sex marriage politicians. And, by the way they are Catholic. Gimme a break.

Exactly. if Kennedy and his ilk do not agree with the teachings of the Church why do they still want to address themselves as Catholic. Why not go to another Church whose views they can agree with.
What truly gets me is they profess to be Catholic and they have no clue exactly what being a Catholic means or what The Catholic Church teachings are.

I was jsut listening to Carl Rove on O’Rielly to night. O’Rielly asked him what he thought of the Bishop telling Kennedy not to recieve Comunion. Rove said, “I am not Catholic but I admire the Bishop for standing up for what his Church teaches, the Catholic Church is against abortion, so why would Kennedy not understand that?”, this man not being a Catholic understands the faith better than Kennedy.

The hubris of the Kennedy family with regard to their “Catholicism” knows no bounds (except for the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who was truly devout and pro-life.)

This link to a Wall Street Journal article details the origins - way back in 1964 - of the strategy that the Kennedys and others adopted whereby they would keep their religion and politics compartmentalized.

The Hyannisport meeting mentioned in the above article was detailed also in the book “And the Faithful Departed” by Philip Lawler, in which he details the implosion of the Catholic culture once so prevalent in the Boston area.

Good for Bishop Tobin and others who speak up in an effort to show pro-abortion politicians for the hypocrites they are.

I am reminded of how much grief Jesus went through with the leaders of his time, calling the pharises and saducees hypocrites for being more concerned with Tradition and custom and not following their hearts. He called them out, exactly like Bishop Tobin is calling on Kennedy. It appears that Bishop Tobin is only speaking what the Holy Spirit is telling him to speak. Because this mirrors exactly what Jesus did,

It appears to me what Bishop Tobin is really doing is calling to the rest of us and making an example out of Kennedy much like Jesus did to his leaders in tryin to teach the rest of us an important lesson.

I really do feel that we as Catholics need a good shaking up, a good wake up call, smack on the hands for sleeping through this mess.

I would read a book that can explain that.

Wow! Stand up for what you believe in… What a concept! 👍

This deserves quite a bit of attention, since so little attention has been given for so very long now- about 30 years-and we have millions of aborted babies. I praise Bishop Tobin for his words and I know he will be persecuted for them. It is never easy to be in the spotlight speaking the truth. At least Bishop Tobin has truth on his side. Kennedy is squirming and appealing to those that also want to fall away and it will not be a good thing for him I pray this Thanksgiving that he examines his conscience and gets the courage to face his demons.
