No, ja4. It seems that way to you because you have a deficient view of the Church. You stated you believe that “church” is the body of believers on earth. This is not an Apostolic understanding of the Church. The church cannot err because Jesus is the Head of the Church.

Human beings err, and cause divisions. This is not the will of God.

Individuals making mistakes or sinning is not the same as the Church making errors, or sinning. The Church cannot sin because she is protected by God.
This statement is incoherent. The church is made up of fallen men who have erred. No man in any church at any time can be said to be infallible. The church has sinned greatly in the inqusitions up to the present day scandals.

Came across this passage from I John 2:27 and i think it relates to what your write here:
" As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."

If a teacher is necessary then why would John write something like this?
Because the annointing they received was from teachers appointed by Christ. Notice “which you received”. It was handed down to them through those appointed by Christ.
This statement is incoherent.
I believe you. I think that you are unable to comprehend the nature of the Church. It is a spiritual reality imparted from faith, for faith. 🤷
The church is made up of fallen men who have erred.
I think, if you remain in scripture eventually God will be able to reveal to you that this is a deficient concept of the Church. Unless and until that happens, you may not be able to restrain yourself from biting and gnawing at His body.
No man in any church at any time can be said to be infallible.
It is the teaching that is infallible, ja4. You have misunderstood what the Church teaches.
The church has sinned greatly in the inqusitions up to the present day scandals.
No, ja4, the church does not sin. People sin. The Holy Bride of Christ cannot sin because her Head is Christ and she is ensouled by the HS. It is the divine elements of the Church that preserve her purity.

Not so with a believer. A Christian is not separated from Christ when he sins. Rather he grieves the HS and when he repents he is forgiven. He is also cleansed by the blood of Christ.
you seem to repeatedly resist the teachings of the original Church (the only one, in the eyes of God…)… Did you know that demons during exorcisms repeatedly say things like that the Catholic Church needs to go back to the old ways… No Communion in hand… etc… They say that Hell is more terrible than anyone imagines and that God’s justice is “terrible”… If God cares about (what you Protestants proably think is a small thing - how to receive Communion properly)… think how he feels about other things… God is perfectly Holy… perfectly just…
Is Christ “Real Presence” only expierenced by catholics during the mass and euchartistic adoration?
The Real Presence is There when therre is no adoration also… just in a different way… but yes, the Real Presence of Christ abides in HIS Church and (tangibly) nowhere else…

If a teacher isn’t necessary, why would John write this epistle to these people in the first place? His purpose is clearly to teach people things.

John seems to imply that the people he’s referring to have already been taught, especially when he says they’ve “heard” things:

I John 2:24: See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you.

Waiting for a response to this:
Can’t some parts of scripture…

Can’t some parts of scripture (particularly on topics which are not mentioned often, like maybe angels) be understood different ways, without any of them causing a contradiction or being considered extra-biblical?
Can you give me an example?
In such an occurrence, would multiple understandings of a passage be correct, even if they contradict each other?
I don’t think so. If there is a contradictions in understanding about something then they both cannot be correct. One may be or both could be wrong but not both of them being correct. For example on this topic. A Christian is either saved always OSAS or he is not as the catholic position states. It has to be one of the other.
Or would only one be correct, in which case a teacher (who was taught correctly) would be necessary to prevent us from getting the wrong idea?
How would we know if a teacher is taught correctly? What would be necessary for her to have the correct understanding?

It is true what you say about God.

So you cannot expierence the presence of Christ in other places without the Euchartist?

Yes! The son chose to return.

I think we can say that the son’s sins were forgiven even when he was sleeping with the pigs and consorting with gentiles. We know that because the father saw the son coming, from afar, and ran out to meet him. The father, then, must have always been scanning the horizon looking for the return of his son.

But, even though he was still his father’s son, and his sins were forgiven, paid for, this didn’t do him any good as long as he slept with the pigs and stayed away from his father. He had first to return to get the benefit from forgivenesss.

Another thing–when the son returned, even though he was forgiven, the stink of pig dung and the stain of consorting with gentiles were still was on his garments. He couldn’t go to the banquet that way (Nothing unclean will enter there…). And there was nothing the son could do on his own to get that off. Not to worry! His father provided clean garments so he could go to the banquet (purgatory).

It’s evident that the son didn’t do any work, to deserve or earn his inheritance. It depended all on the father. But, the son had to chose to return and accept it.
Certainly in this parable the son does make a decision to return to his father’s house, but in the two companion parables, (Luke 15:4-10) where a man’s sheep wanders away and a woman loses her coin, the character representing God does all the work. The coin does not decide to return to the woman, nor does the sheep decide to return to the shepherd. The initiative in these parables is completely God’s.

Now, in no parable are the analogies perfect. I’m just saying that if Jesus’ point in ‘The Prodigal Son’ was that man chooses while God waits passively, why would He pair it with these other parables which indicate axactly the opposite.

One of the things it seems to me that He is saying in these parables is that God never ultimately loses that which is His. I am unaware of any prodigal son type parable in which the prodigal does not return.

just because God doesn’t lose anything that is His… (though obstinancy in sin will separate one from God)… doesn’t mean that there isn’t a purification process needed before entering into intimacy with God (Heaven)… I believe anyone who loves God, no matter what kind of sins he has on his soul, if he were to die, he would go to Heaven… but he wouldn’t straight to Heaven… He would have to get cleaned up… and the bible is full of passages about the necessity of such a purification… (etc).

so, are you saying you don’t believe in Purgatory?

Also, i don’t understand the last sentence… about the prodigal son not returning

now that i think about it, this passage about the prodigal son seems to prove Purg… because if the Bible is not contradictory… and we can believe both Rev 21:27 (no impure thing will enter Heaven) and also the one (say) about passing through fire (1 cor 3:13)… and this one about the prodigal son… well… it proves that even though one is impure, he can (some day) get to Heaven. this virtually proves there has to be a Purgatory…( not that some of us need proof… but some do…).

If i can speak my mind without seeming rude (cause i am not trying to be rude…)… This passage, in and of itself, does not prove that this is the ONLY way to deal with the “testimony of demons” demons must obey God and when they speak in an exorcism, it is because God allows it, because God is trying to tell us something… and obviously, when God tries to tell us something (and allows such phenomenon in order to do so) it behooves us to listen…
you cannot expierence the presence of Christ in other places without the Euchartist?
No.

that’s the simple answer. God can be found in solitude and nature… and getting away from everything (everyone)… but Jesus Christ (who is God) and what he has to say to us about our lives (relationships, etc) can really only be found in the Real Presence… I have to say that i also experience His Presence while reading the Bible… and praying the rosary… However there is something very unique and powerful about the Real Presence… hard to put into words… Ever been there?

God bless…

(Also: I apologize if i have ever said anything to you that wasn’t Christian-sounding- I don’t recall if it was you or someone else but one time recently i was very impatient because i thought you were refusing to listen and/or really didn’t want to hear the Catholic position… but i got to thinking about it later and realized that i should not have thought such a thing… and even if that was true… that you weren’t sincere… I shouldn’t have lost my patience… So anyway… my only excuse is i am human… :hypno: )

Pretty good excuse, huh?? 😃

Anyway… have a good one…

No need to apologize to me. I know people feel very passionate about these things and we all can get emotional about these things. I also find this way of communication to be a double edge sword. Its great for quick communication across the world and for copying articles etc. Its limits are in understanding exactly what people mean in their contexts. I get into more trouble assuming things rather than seeking to understand and clarify…anyway–God bless…👍

well, that’s big of you… Seriously… saying you don’t need an apology and that you realize people are passionate about “things”…

Even so…

You may not want / need an apology but my guilty conscience needed to give you one… 😃

I really suprise myself sometimes by the things i say and/or my lack of patience… which leads to un-charitable- sounding posts… :whacky: :doh2:

Yes, i am passsionate … Thanks for appreciating that… but i don’t want my… un-Christian-like behavior to wax worse and worse… (not to mention my self-loathing) :crutches: which is what would happen if i did not acknowledge it / do something about it…

thanks for accepting my apology… God bless…

No, I’m not talking about purgatory at all. I’m talking about whether people whom God has saved will go to hell. I don’t think that this parable proves that they do. Do you?

The point is that if there were a similar parable in which the son decided to stay with the pigs instead of coming home, that would be evidence that we could lose our salvation. But there is no such parable in the Bible.

well, you are operating from a Protestant perspective to evne insinuate tha every truth can be found in the bible… As you know (probably) Catholics do not subscribe to this notion…

But in any case… even if evdrything we need for salvation could be found in the bible… The fact that there is NOT a scripture saying thus and so… does not mean… that thus and so… is not scirptural…

OK… forget that…

What i mean is that… Well, again, it goes back to that notion that every truth (Christian truth) can be found in the Bible…

I think we need to agree that that is not true befroe we can really continue this conversation…

Or do i think that just beause i am tired (and distracted 😃 )… :doh2: :hmmm:

Hmmm… Well, anyway, there are plenty of scirptures that allude to the notion that we CAN lose our salvation…

I print the daily Mass readings every day… on this forum and it is amazing how many of those passages allude to that… fact that there is no OSAS…

I really don’t know how much proof one needs… and if i may be so frank… i believe that once you throw out the Church and try to rely on the bible alone… it won’t be long before you throw out the bible (consciously or un-consciously)… meaning that if you question the Church “to death”… it won’t be long before you question the Bible or at least some passages and/or the true interpretation(s) thereof… too much questioning is NOT good… which why i am SO thankful i no longer question… I studied, got answers… and got to a point where i no longer have serious questions… about the Church Christ established on Earth…

God bless…

.
i never said it said that someone “saved” will go to Hell… I believe the passage shows that salvation is an ongoing thing… Otherswise, why would it say we are being “built”… as though to say we are not completed yet…

and if we are not completed (purified) by the time we die, God is merciful (Some people die “prematurely”… car accidents, etc…) and so there is Purg.

Work out your salvation with fear and trembling… (Philippians 2;12)

That one is pretty clear also…

I’m not sure what you mean by “Christian truth”, is there such a thing as unchristian truth?

Well if today’s are any indication, I would suspect that many of these passages don’t deal with OSAS at all.

I kind of doubt that there are more Bible-doubting Baptists than Catholics. Just judging from these forums & the study notes in my NAB I’d say that doubting the historicity of Genesis, the signatures of the Epistles, &c., is much more common among Catholics.

i never said it said that someone “saved” will go to Hell… I believe the passage shows that salvation is an ongoing thing…
So nobody is saved until they get to heaven? What about all the Scripture verses that say we are saved? For example I Corinthians I:18:
Otherswise, why would it say we are being “built”… as though to say we are not completed yet…
See post #2.

Some translations of that verse say “those who are saved,” and some say “those who are being saved.”

What does the original Greek say? It uses the present passive participle. Participles indicate ongoing action. That means the saving isn’t a done deal. We’re not saved yet, but God is always trying to help us along. 😉

Whoops. I should have looked at the Greek on that before I posted. There are of course other verses which say we are saved:

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ (by whose grace you are saved) Eph 2:5

For by grace you are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God. Eph 2:8

In these verses in Greek, it’s the perfect passive participle, which indicates completed action.

Most of the newer translations say “have been saved”. “Are” is a more literal translation of the verb, but “have been” conveys to us the participle being in the perfect tense.

Anyway both “are saved”, & “have been saved” show that there we are saved, in some sense, at least, before we get to heaven.

If you read the gospels and Acts you will find that the testimony of demons is always rejected. Jesus always told them to be silent and did not want any support from them. We need to follow this example even in a exorcism.
It is true what you say about God.

?
even when the demons called Jesus the HOly One of God???

II don’t think every truth is in the Bible, if OSAS weren’t in the Bible, then I would say losing salvation might be true, though it’s certainly not in the Bible. Are you trying to prove losing salvation from the Bible or not?
where in the Bible does it say that once you are saved, you are always saved??

It isn’t there… i’ve read the New Testament several times over…
