Tolton Catholic High School announced Wednesday it is ending it’s relationship with the clothing company that provides its school uniforms.
Administrators sent a letter home to parents saying it will no longer use Lands’ End as a uniform provider because the company backs an advocate for abortion rights.
In the latest spring catalog, Lands’ End endorses Gloria Steinem, who, according to the company, has “made a difference in her own industry and paved the way for others to follow.”

Missouri is making all kinds of news lately for ending relationships with companies/organizations that support abortion. Good for us! My state has been in the news so much recently with Ferguson and Mizzou and Girl Scouts and now this.

I’m glad I haven’t bought from Land’s End in a long time. Who would have imagined they would have done this? They do have some practical reasonably priced clothes.

Founded in Chicago, now headquartered in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

They have a lot of children’s clothes, really for everyone.

I would not buy from them, it seems strange that somehow Gloria Steinem is in this story as well.

Lands’ End apologizes, drops Gloria Steinem from catalog

Lands’ End has dropped Gloria Steinem from its spring catalog after some customers expressed anger that the clothing maker featured her.

In a statement on Facebook (FB, Tech30), Lands’ End said that “some customers were troubled and concerned that we featured an interview with Gloria Steinem in a recent catalog.”

“It was never our intention to raise a divisive political or religious issue, so when some of our customers saw a recent promotion that way, we heard them,” said Lands’ End. “We sincerely apologize for any offense.”

Our local (St. Louis) EWTN affiliate aired a conversation this morning about this story, and the oft-repeated question was “Why can’t you just make clothing? Why do you have to get into the culture war? It’s not good for your business.” And clearly, it isn’t.

Relative to the Archbishop’s severing of relationship with Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, this is a much more proximate evil. Part of the proceeds from a Land’s End order could directly go to Gloria Steinem’s organization. The GSEM has no relationship with Planned Parenthood (even though other GS affiliates in other states do).

The conundrum sometimes comes where big companies do good and bad.

Our employees believe strongly in giving back to the community. So our company focuses on the programs and issues Lands’ End employees care about most. And they care a lot.
Their passion means our company supports a number of community events‚ local churches‚ veterans’ organizations‚ homeless shelters and more. We’ve built homes, donated equipment to schools and scrap fabrics to charitable quilters. We match our employees’ fundraising efforts‚ and we’ve cast Humane Society dogs in our catalog shoots to highlight the benefits of adoption.
Lands’ End even helps employees connect with volunteer opportunities in their hometowns‚ and we honor the time they give with our matching contributions program.
So matching donations in this case. Still, it would not surprise me to look further and find them doing good things, in fact, per above, “donated equipment to schools” etc., it looks like they have.

Thats what I dont udnerstand, every company I have ever worked for takes NO position on controversial issues because they dont want to loose ANY business, they will just say “no comment” when asked.

I remember a large pizza chain I worked for when younger, we had a porn shop opening in the same shopping mall, it was big news back then, our corporate office told us very specifically to never give a comment about it, always say “NO COMMENT”, they jokingly told us they want the people buying porn to buy pizza as well as those protesting it!

It’s one thing if a company takes an action that relates to a controversial issue - such as extending benefits to domestic partners of same-sex employees when same-sex marriages weren’t yet legal - but another to literally take a public stance that has nothing to do with how the company is run. The former is trying to seek a competitive advantage in hiring (my company actually has a fairly large number of GLBT persons, including several who are married), the latter is just … I don’t know, bad marketing?

At my last company there was talk of extending benefits to same-sex partners but the opposite-sex partners complained that that was unfair, ie “we have two kids together but because we aren’t married I can’t put my girlfriend on my insurance? But Bob can put Jim on his insurance and we’ve been together four years longer?”

Same at the organization I worked for. I had a co worker who was a single guy. He took advantage of the rule and had a male roommate who was a car salesman that didn’t have insurance. He signed his roommate up as his partner. Both men were very heterosexual but they “used” the system. In reality they were not breaking any rules, they were friends who lived together.

I think there was a movie with this as the plot about a decade ago…?? Kevin James from King of Queens as a straight fire fighter wanting to get benefits for his friend by claiming they were a couple.
