That is putting it mildly:

Here’s a letter to the editors of the Washington Post that all 6 of the Joint Chiefs of Staff sent this week in response (click here for full-size .pdf file):

The letter from the four-star generals and admirals reads in part:

We were extremely disappointed to see the editorial cartoon by Tom Toles on page B6 in the January 29th edition. Using the likeness of a service member who has lost his arms and legs in war as the central theme of a cartoon is beyond tasteless. Editorial cartoons are often designed to exaggerate issues–and your paper is obviously free to address any topic, including the state of readiness of today’s Armed Forces. However, we believe you and Mr. Toles have done a disservice to your readers and your paper’s reputation by using such a callous depiction of those who have volunteered to defened this nation, and as a result, have suffered traumatic and life-altering wounds… …While you or some of your readers may not agree with the war or its conduct, we believe you owe the men and women and their families who so selflessly serve our country the decency to not make light of their tremendous physical sacrifices.

As the Joint Chiefs, it is rare that we all put our hand to one letter, but we cannot let this reprehensible cartoon go unanswered.

I was most upset with this comment

Kurtz also quoted Dave Autry, deputy communications director for Disabled American Veterans, saying he was “certainly not” offended by the cartoon.

How can you not be offended by someone using disabled vets to prove a horrible point???
Beckers
What is incredible is that we go way out of our way to be polically correct in so many instances, and then we can’t understand why this is offensive? Go figure…

Sorry, but I cannot understand why thinking Americans would be offended by that Toles cartoon.

I understand why Rumsfeld and the Joint Chiefs might be offended: in Rummy’s case, because he was the target of the joke, and in the case of the JCS, because Toles’ underlying point – that US forces are stretched very thin by their current responsibilities, and that this is a serious problem – may be uncomfortably close to a truth they don’t want to acknowledge.

I saw the Joint Chiefs’ letter as profoundly political. I’m not a bit surprised that a representative of the DAV doesn’t see the cartoon as a problem. Most American vets, disabled or otherwise, earned their status defending American freedoms. Freedom to criticize the Pentagon is a pretty central one of those freedoms. Efforts by guys with scrambled egg on their hats to browbeat the Washington Post might not sit well with them, whether they agree with the point of the cartoon or not.

I find it ironic that those beating the loudest drums for freedom and democracy are the ones most critical of this cartoon.

Of course they are. It hits too close to home and causes their consciences to react to all the carnage they are ultimately responsible for. 😉

In other words: The Truth HURTS.
