The Vatican press office has issued a statement to ease concerns about a report that a new papal tomb is being prepared in St. Peter’s basilica.

The I Media news agency reported on March 16 that workers are preparing a marble tomb for the next Pontiff to die. But Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, said there was “no mystery” about the preparation. There is only one chapel remaining free in the grotto of the basilica, he said, and “it was wise to foresee other possibilities as well.”

Just a guess, but I wonder if they’re working on what has become the Sacred Grotto’s “revolving door” tomb: where St. John XXIII was originally buried, then became where St. John Paul II was buried when John was moved to the main floor of St. Peter’s, and which became vacant again when John Paul was “moved upstairs.”
 
Not surprising. Benedict is 88 and Francis is 79. It’s highly unlikely that both men will live another 3-5 years. I’m not wishing death on either, but actuarial tables are reality.
