Teaching, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, 3. Tongues

Tongues is an unique gift of the Holy Spirit. It is not an automatic gift. One has to know about the gift, be interested in the gift, understand how the gift operates, and be willing to seek the gift.

One absolutely has to believe in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

The current negative atmosphere in this thread is not good for a teaching regarding Tongues. The thread’s overwhelming misinformation will drown out the teaching’s truths. Therefore, there is no good reason for me to continue.

Hi, Reuben!

I’m not an avid reader, but what I understand, from my mom’s devotions, is that the Saints did not seek out the Gifts of the Holy Spirit–and that those who received them were became even more humbled by the Gifts… one of mom’s favorite devotions was to St. Martin de Porres–this poor fellow was shunned because he was a “mulato” (mixed race) and because of his poverty… yet, the Holy Spirit bestowed upon him His Grace and he was Gifted beyond measure… I understand that he remained, without Receiving the Priestly Orders, a Layman but the Church recognized God’s Works in him.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit is always for the edification of the Body (the Church), even when they may apply to the individual’s spiritual growth.

Hi. You are correct and that should be the disposition - as the Sprit gives. The gifts are for the upbuilding of the body of Christ and to be used as such.

Gift of tongue, being the lowest of the charismatic gift, however has two pronged functions - to upbuild oneself in growth through prayers and also to upbuild the body. It is not wrong to desire this gift but since it is the Spirit who gives, we can only ask but whether it is given to us is the Spirit’s prerogative. Also it is not an indication of anything about us whether we have it or not.

Hi, Granny!

…actually, the reality is the opposite… you’ve pointed to the overwhelming misinformation… where better to establish sound doctrine?

…could you imagine life being easy for the Apostles?

…what if they would have though, ‘gee, these people will never get it, why bother to even try?’

…many of us might be going through a mess of problems (I personally have not had an accommodating life’s experience… what with near death experiences [the first one right from my crib], financial woes, and overwhelming battles, betrayals, and overall disappointments and disenchantment); yet, if people would just give up… the bodies would be dropping like leaves on a New England Autumn.

I may be one of the louder voices on this thread… please understand that I’m not seeking to drown you.

…so as that old song said: ‘keep it coming now…’

…now, if you look closely, what you’ve just posted is the same thing I have been trying to express: the Gifts are from the Holy Spirit; it is the Holy Spirit that Imparts them (highlighted text).

Hi, Reuben!

I concur!

Mom saw visions… she was even granted to know that her older son would die before her and that he, as he was separated from the Church, would object to her offering Mass for his Salvation/Purification… decades later it happened!

I personally have not had any visions (which I would love to have); the best I’ve experience is a dream or two here and there…but these experiences does not reflect in any way on anyone’s spirituality or ability to summon the Holy Spirit Graces.

God’s Purpose and Choice is always fully dependent upon His Will and His Plan.

It is obvious that to become holy we must engage in holiness; so it is with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

My concern is that I’ve witness a “need” to do this or that… to become this or that… I feel that people get more involved in ‘what I want’ than with what God wants and what is needed in the Body.
