Is it a myth or ignorance to point out that illegals are breaking the law?
Apparently it is, according to the USCCB representative quoted in the article, who mentions “the so-called ‘illegals’” – What in the world can he mean by that? :nope:

Is it a myth or ignorance to point out that illegals are breaking the law? And as far as “What would Jesus do”? Do you think that Jesus would condone breaking laws?

By no means is it not importnat to point out that illegals are breaking laws. In fact the Church has pointed that out.

However that is one facet. The people that are hiring them are breaking laws. We as a country to fuel this expanding Economy have basically turned a blind eye toward this. The illegals have gained but make no mistake we have gained too.

In the end there are a lot of myths. But most of the myths I hear are coming from one side. That side is not the Catholic Bishops but hte other extreme.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform as proposed by the President is one of the most Catholic pieces of legislation I have ever seen. If you go through the Chruches teaching it mirrors it exactly

That is the need to secure our borders
The need to obey laws
and Finally to
Treat the Alien in our midst and their familes as people with human dignity.

Every Catholic faithful to the teachings of the Christ and his Church I think should seriously engage those proposals.

Would Jesus protest outside an abortion clinic even if it was against the CIVIL Law?
Better Yet did Joseph and May violate some immigration law when they fled into Egypt?😃 TO be honest I have no clue what the state of immigration laws were as to proviences of the Roman Empire but I am willing to bet they might not have been registering with local authorities there while King Herold was looking for our Lord

St. Thomas Aquinas said that an unjust law was not a law.

I recognize that many people think our current immigration laws are just. But the point is that if they are unjust–as many other people, clearly including many bishops of the Catholic Church and leaders of other churches–believe, then they are not laws at all and do not bind the conscience.

…and if that is the case, these Church leaders should be willing to pay the penalty of breaking the immigration laws and/or assisting others to do so.

The problem is not immigration, but illegal immigration that is rampant and uncontrolled. First of all, we need to gain control of our borders as difficult as that will be (the first thing you do with a wound is to stop the bleeding). Second, once we have control of our borders, we need to legalize the millions of illegal immigrants already here. I don’t care if this is “amnesty” or not, the numbers are too great to keep amongst us as illegals and, in many cases, a family of illegals include children born in this country who are American citizens. We cannot break up families and we cannot send American citizens 'back" to a country they never knew. I’d suggest that legalization be done over a five year period leading to citizenship, with some small penalty (really a symbolic “slap on the wrist”) that at least stands for the proposition that it is not ok to illegally immigrate to this country. Third, we need some sort of guest worker program so that our businesses can gain the migrant labor that they need and honest folks who wish to come here legally, yet temporarily, to find work and better themselves can do so.
