Too much noise and talking in Church

For those who get upset just because of a shush, it is not the shushers that are too loud or rude, it’s those who instead of being adult about it and complying, show what they really are by their reactions. It is like calling right, wrong and calling wrong, right.
How upset would you be if Jesus Christ called you a brood of vipers? If you take your Catholic faith seriously, then you will take Church teaching and Holy Scripture seriously, if not; you are only kidding yourself. Here are some scripture verses to meditate on.
*“Matthew 12:34 (DR)
34 O generation of vipers, how can you speak good things, whereas you are evil? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”
“*Galatians 5:22-26 (DR) **
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity,
23 Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s, have crucified their flesh, with the vices and concupiscences.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be made desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying on another.”

Proverbs 16:25 (DR)
25 There is a way that seemeth to a man right: and the ends thereof lead to death.”

Have we become so diabolically disoriented, that we no longer recognize the Sacred or the very reason why we came to Mass?

If you really believe that way, then you are seriously deceived, have your head in the sand and/or are ignoring reality.
Here are a few comments I have gotten by those I know that are non-Catholic.
“Catholic’s are hypocrites; look at the way they act like in Mass. They go to Confession, tell their sins to a man, leave and continue showing the same disrespect to God as they did before.”
“Catholic’s can’t have the Holy Spirit, because if they did, their behavior would show it. Look how rude they are in Mass.”
“Look at how many Catholic’s go and party down at Mardi gras, then do the 40 days of Lent; and then continue acting as stupid as they did before Lent. What hypocrites. I’m glad I left.”
“Catholic’s go to Mass to act all holy, and then continue cussing and drinking afterwards. Notice how they act like before and after Mass. I’m glad my church takes the bible seriously.”
Imagine leaving the Catholic faith because people are talking in Church! No way! Yes, I could see changing parishes, but leaving the Church? Absolutely no way. If one did that, the roots of the catholicity couldn’t run too deep to begin with.

As a rule I don’t take direction about the state of His Church from non-members – particularly those who feel their personal interpretation of Scripture gives them the authority to judge others.

To be blunt, your comments about confession, drinking and others things are the words I most hear from anti-Catholic bigots. Principally fundamentalist baptists. Why did you feel the need to interject them here when we are talking about noise in the church?

Yep, it happens in our parish too. And there is an especially pronounced problem of behavior with some of the children. I’ve posted about it several times in these forums. Many of the children, before… DURING… and after Mass… are allowed, by their parents to run around in the Narthex… whooping like banshee’s… darting in and out of the glass doors leading into the Church… and frolicking in the Baptismal Font (there has been a big problems with coins, chewing gum… etc… being thrown into the font; it’s disgusting).

Many of the elderly folks, too… (those who should know better) will sit in the back of the Church, prior to Mass… and talk, very loudly.

Then, there are the donut and coffee crowd… who loiter just outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel… sipping coffee, munching donuts… laughing and carrying on… as though it were a tail gate party. Sometimes, they allow their kids to press their noses up against the glass doors of the chapel… making faces at those inside… who are trying to prayerfully prepare for the next Mass.

I’ve also been aware of the problem, on Saturday afternoons… at Reconciliation. Once, while I was waiting my turn in line… there was a child… misbehaving so loudly, and persistently… in the presence of the parent… that Father got up in the middle of someone’s confession, opened the door… and shouted at the top of his lungs… “QQQQUUUUUUIIIIIIEEEEEEETTTTTT”. I was like… so shocked, that it took this poor priest, leaving the confessional to wake the parent UP to what their child was doing.

I’m at a complete loss as to what (if anything) can be done about it. It’s like there’s a couple generations of Catholics out there… who have NO CLUE how to behave in God’s House… and especially, during the Holy Mass.🤷

Don’t even START me on the people who don’t seem to know… it is inappropriate to APPLAUD during Mass. There is one lady who regularly sits in front of us… each Sunday… who always STARTS the applause, after the Choir finishes the Communion hymn. It’s all I can do to keep from reaching forward, and pinning her hands behind her… so she won’t applaud.

Hypocracy is everywhere, but not in everyone. It’s true there are disrespectful people in a Catholic church, but the same is true for Protestant churches. I hated all but one of the Protestant churches for that reason…I have a friend who now attends a Protestant church. She lied about being separated in order to get her homestead exemption on taxes on their condo - their house is paid off. She even had a good friend forge a document. So, it’s important not to start pointing fingers at one religion or another. Good and bad apples exist in all religions and even in all churches, but fortunately they are in the minority.

I am so sorry this happens at your parish. Please let me offer the outline of at least one process that would brings results:
  1. At the close of each Mass on any given Sunday just before the final blessing, the pastor gives a 5 minute lecture on the need to be quiet inside the church. If the pastor is not the celebrant, then he still needs to show-up to give this brief lecture.
  2. Prominent but polite notice in the bulletin to please be quiet in the church, reinforcing #1.
  3. Very visible signs on each door reiterating #1. Make them permanent.
  4. Celebrant repeats the request (if needed) 10 minutes before each Mass from the ambo at each Mass as necessary.
If this process was tactfully, lovingly and diligently followed for 30-90 days, the culture would change in just about any parish.

Maybe you and some others could sit-down with your pastor and help him craft such a program? Offer to do all the heavy lifting…

Yep! I know what you mean. Of course, no one is taught about the documents that say it is inappropriate to applaud at Mass. No one is performing, but everything is an offering to God.
Regarding the OP, I agree with lovesMary. Yes, even libraries are noisy these days cause people are inconsiderate.

I just hope and pray that holy father benedict brings the respect and holiness of the rites back to the rites.

Wow, I honestly can’t believe some of the things I’m reading…it’s shocking that people are so disrespectful they can’t even be quiet in a church. What a sad state of our society…

I’m very fortunate, because while I have seen the occasional bad behavior from people, for the most part I would say it’s pretty good. Catholic parishes do seem a lot louder than Protestant ones, but I think that might also have to do with the fact that Catholic parishes are just HUGE. There was one non-denominational church service I went to, and beforehand it seemed to be about the same noise level as the average Catholic parish. But I agree, people really need to learn to be quiet. As it states in Ecclesiastes, there is a time to keep SILENT and a time to speak.

NOT every one who attends Mass has the same degree of grace within themselves. ALSO not everyone who attends Mass is at the same state in their walk with Jesus as the shushers are. As I mentioned in the previous post. Church is for the sinners too, not just all the saintly shushers.

maybe you should pray and reread your post, especially the highlighted areas. OFFER IT UP, pray for the person making the noises… DON’T SHUSH THEM! it is nasty and comes from the mouth!

Because what I am talking about has everything to do with it. Are you upset because this makes you more accountalble then you want to be? In case you are not aware or it, an MSNBC news poll showed that we are losing members to non-denominational and evangelical churches. Whether we realize it or not, our behavior does have more ramifications then we are aware of and it only fuels the opposition of those who already look down on us. What I am showing here is a larger spiritual picture; that our behavior leaves more of an impression then we realize. We can learn something from our critics.
1 Corinthians 8:9 (DR)
9 But take heed lest perhaps this your liberty become a stumblingblock to the weak.

It is called respect. Jesus at times got angry, and it too came from the mouth.

True, there are Protestant Churches that can be noisy as well. But we are a Catholic Church; and this is what we should consider;
  1. We have the real presence of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist, they don’t.
  2. We are a Sanctuary where the real presence of God dwells.
  3. We are to train up our children to realize this and teach them how they are to conduct themselves in Church.
  4. We are to teach them this by our godly example.
  5. We shouldn’t be clapping after the music as if we were attending a concert instead of the Mass, glorifying gifts instead of God.
    Zephaniah 1:7 (DR)
7 Be silent before the face of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is near, for the Lord hath prepared a victim, he hath sanctified his guests.
    Zechariah 2:13 (DR)
13 Let all flesh be silent at the presence of the Lord: for he is risen up out of his .holy habitation.

I totally agree with you!!! I’ve made several posts earlier in this thread about how too much noise annoys me. Besides it annoying me, I do believe it’s disrespectful. Its incredible that while Fr. is saying the prayer to transform the wafer and wine into the precious blood and body of Christ, I can hear adults whispering.

My post was a response to an implication that Catholics are noisy, which is why the church is losing members.

I find it disrespectful too. Something on a positive note that our parish priest did last Sunday–was he wove in this type of disrespect, ranging from showing up excessively late repeatedly at mass, to talking during mass. It was not a scolding, but rather a reminder that…we are at mass, and should observe the solemnity and value of where we are. God is everywhere, but we are about to consume the Eucharist–nothing should distract us. If families are tending to little children/babies, it is understood that they will have some distractions…lol But, I see many couples, without kids, whispering and laughing during Consecration, and I wonder when things changed like this at mass. I just wanted to chime in that this too bothers me, at times. I try to ignore what is going on around me, and focus on why we are there–to worship, but sometimes the noise bugs me.:o

and your response could be… church is the hospital for sinners!
And their response would be; "We are sinners too, but we don’t claim to have the real presence of Jesus Christ in the bread and wine. But we have enough sense to have a reverence for God when the Holy Spirit descends in power. You would think that Catholics of all people would realize that. Why do you think that we are on our knees crying over our sin before Almighty God when His presence comes down?”
