Top Cardinal Says Priest Celibacy Rule Needs to be Reexamined

Schönborn wrote in his archdiocese magazine that “the issue of priests’ training” and “the question of priest celibacy and the question of personality development” were among the things that needed to be examined by the Vatican. Schönborn added that priest celibacy “requires a great deal of honesty, both on the part of the church and of society as a whole.”

Schönborn has a history of igniting controversy. He is a bishop to Austria’s Eastern Rite Catholics, whose priests are allowed to marry. He presented a petition last year in Rome calling for the abolition of priestly celibacy saying that “It is important for someone in Rome to know what some of our lay people are thinking about the problems of the church.”

He says he is not challenging the rule, just calling for its open discussion.
 
What makes one a “Top Cardinal” (See title of thread.) vs. a regular cardinal? I thought all cardinals only got one vote each when voting for a new pope?
 
When are people going to understand that marriage does not stop man from being pedophile or whatever. it has nothing to do wiht celibacy. if anything celibacy keeps a man pure and holy for the Lord.

how many pedophile married men or free to marry are out there? does anyone know? let’s put out there for everyone to see.

First, the issue for priests (and I have talked with hundreds on this) is not celibacy so much as it is OBEDIENCE. And, as Mother Teresa used to say, we may be sent some place we do not want to go, but must go nevertheless once the bishop has decided.

Second, the *formation *process is what needs to be examined. It is beyond argument that a great many bishops have tolerated sexually practicing homosexual priests in their dioceses. In the 1950s and 1960s, particularly in the latter decade, there was a belief that having a homosexual priest was better than having no priest at all and, in the error of judgment, those who were in charge of formation believed that the ‘mistress’ issue would be solved by having priests who were not attracted to women, and everything would be fine. Well, look at the consequences of this. A sexual scandal of incredible perversion has inundated the Church in many countries of the world.

Celibacy for the priesthood is worth looking at, but in the approach of formation. And many people think that priests can get married in the Eastern Church like protestant ministers can. This is such a wrong perception on the part of the laity. Priests in the Eastern rites must be married PRIOR TO ORDINATION. They cannot get married AFTER ordination. Also, once the wife of a priest dies, HE IS NOT ALLOWED TO MARRY AGAIN. He must remain celibate. AND, bishops in the east are ALL celibate as far as I know.

People who chase after Medjugorje like to think of him as a “Top Cardinal”.
Wishful thinking.
 
He was the chief editor of the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church.
 
I agree with this. I think we need more preists. I’m a conservative Catholic. I think that eliminating this rule can attract new followers to the church. Some preists are married and there doesn’t seem to be an issue. But is up to God to determine this and he’ll guid us through times of tribulation.
