The article is all about statistics for children in homes with married parents vs. homes without married parents. +Dolan’s comment was about the rates of sexual abuse by married men vs non-married men. They aren’t the same thing.

It’s very unfortunate that his words would even appear to be against the traditional family, which he’s obviously a great supporter of.

👍

The title of this thread is a bit misleading. I don’t think that is what Bishop Dolan is trying to do.

I’ve said it before a thousand times, but it is worth repeating-self critiscm is just not that popular for church heirarchy. Ironically ,the pope has admitted grave mistakes and begged for forgiveness. He knows it’s a serious problem. Um…can’t we be like him?

I really like Dolan, but this doesn’t appear to be a good thing…:(.

On the actual topic itself, I suppose it’s more likely to be married men because they’re more likely to have regular access to children. I’ve heard it said many times before and I don’t doubt the statistic.

But perhaps he was either mistaken or didn’t word what he said correctly. Which happens to us all, just embarassing when you happen to be quoted in the press. :o

Do you have a cite for that stat, because the stats provided in the op counter that?

I would have to Google one, and I don’t have the time to do that right now as I’m cooking. I read it in an article a few months back while researching for a debate on CAF which was on a similar topic.

According to the pro-family group (forget their name) the rate of children with married fathers being molested is 1 in 2,000 while the rate of children without married fathers ranges from 5 in 2,000 to 20 in 2,000 (the difference being single parent vs single parent who allows male boyfriends into the home).

Dolan was correct. Children are more likely to be abused by a married man than by a priest.

According to the California Attorney General’s office, 90% of child victims know their offender, with almost half of the offenders being a family member. Of sexual assaults against people age 12 and up, approximately 80% of the victims know the offender. Moreover, most rape offenders are married or in consenting relationships.

There is not even the word “married” anywhere in these stats or the link???

The sexual abuse being spoken about was child sexual abuse. The Bishop would definitely be correct if he had said “between Priests and married men, married men do it more” then he may have been correct, obviously. But he did a horrible job of saying it and, presumably because he was under pressure from the interviewer, ended up making a clear statement that “the greatest culprits in child] sexual abuse are unfortunately married men,” which essentially sounded like throwing married men under the bus. This during a time when the secular world is in the middle of an anti-family assault and is looking for any excuse to attack or belittle the importance of the traditional family.

With regard to married men and sexual child abuse:
a 2010 U.S. Department of Health study and report to Congress that found children raised by their married, biological fathers and mothers are actually the least likely to suffer sexual abuse.
The study found sexual abuse – indeed all forms of abuse – to be least common in homes with married biological parents. According to the report, only about 1 in 2,000 children in such homes suffer sexual abuse.
By comparison, the report states, 5 of every 2,000 children in single-parent households – and 20 of every 2,000 children in households where a single parent welcomes a partner into the home – suffers sexual abuse.
Althought I don’t agree with the group that the Bishop owes an “apology” because he obviously misspoke and didn’t mean what it sounded like, but I think a statement of clarification would be prudent, specifically at a time when anti-family powers are looking all over for sound-bytes such as these to use as ammo.

I believe part of the question, at least from 60 min was on the subject of married preist and that there would be less of a chance of sexual abuse if preist were allowed to marry.
In reply the good bishop put down the question by indicating the married man, statistaclly are more pron to the action than single men.

The problem with that statistic is that it isn’t trying to show what % of married men commit sexual abuse compared to unmarried men, but saying that children who are exposed to several different men during their lifetime are more likely to be abused than those who are raised by only one male during their lifetime. Everyone knows that risk increases the more people are involved with the child.

A better statistic would be comparing the % of married men compared to unmarried men.

Right, which is not true. Please provide any data saying otherwise.

The stats don’t say that at all.

He is right. As we know most abused children are being abused in their own homes by their fathers or someone in the family that is married.

I am sure they going to make a big deal out of this. shame on those who wants to live in darkness and rejects the light.

these people will do anything to bash the CC. they wont miss an opportunity.
