Fr. Frank Brennan favours a “yes” vote on SSM on “common good” grounds (ie. based on a view about what leads to the most good) and his argument relies on mentally separating the ideas of capital M “Marriage” and “civil marriage”. Frank explains: Civil marriage is simply “a contract, terminable on 1 year’s notice, etc, etc…….” showing its many differences to Marriage as the Church understands it. [As a personal observation: If such a limited view is what is meant by civil marriage, you’d wonder why siblings are generally excluded from such a contract? One can imagine elderly spinsters who might well have something to gain from the legal framework of “civil marriage”.]
