Top ranking cardinal reveals future title for Benedict XVI

I personally find this fascinating. It is a situation that has not been experienced in hundreds of years and I really want to see how this all plays out. Pope Benedict has always hit me as a quiet and thoughtful man. He will probably be a great support for the new pontiff.

ME TOO!!!..I think he has much more to share with us, in a theological way. With having all the stresses and taxing of one’s energy lifted from his shoulders, hopefully he will be able to recover some of that and feel better and then continue on teaching us thru his writings.

We are living in challenging and exciting times. As Fr. John Hardon S.J. said a few years ago, it’s a wonderful time to be a Catholic as long as we are willing to live our Faith fully and help others. We can and should, make a difference. God Bless, Memaw

No disrespect was meant. That was a quote from an earlier thread I was involved in. In that thread it was suggested that he would be called Bishop Emeritus of Rome Joseph Ratzinger.
 
I’m confused as to why he would still be addressed as Your Holiness since in modern times that has been reserved for the Pope alone and he will no longer be Pope.

I think it would be confusing, as he is still living and people will still be following anything he says, does or writes. He will no longer have the charism is Papal infallibility and continuing to address him as Pope could be confusing for some people. Not all Catholics are as well informed as the average poster here.

When we address secular officials after retirement we continue to use the highest title they held; President, Governor, General, Admiral, Colonel etc. so I would expect we would continue to address a retired pope as His Holiness.

Probably because to call him anything else would be unthinkable to most people, it would insult their sensibilities.
 
I believe the Vatican Press Office might have not fully considered the implications of giving the perception that there is a difference between the titles “pope” and “bishop of Rome”. From a Catholic perspective, they are one and the same.

During the Reformation, Protestants would refer to the pope as the “bishop of Rome”, being unable to deny that he did in fact hold that office. But they argued that he was just a bishop, with no need for a special title like “pope” which signified something greater.

Let’s never forget that we are Catholics and we do as the Catholic Church does. Not as someones personal opinion says. “Personal opinions” have played havoc among Catholics ever since the Protestant Reformation and Vatican II. The last several Popes have tried to correct the misunderstandings brought about by “personal opinions”. The news media is having a great time with this historic procedure. The devil will do, and use, anything to persecute the Church. We need to be careful we don’t get caught up in his act. I suggest we Pray, Trust and Hope, like St. Padre Pio said. God is still in charge, are we with Him?, God Bless, Memaw
 
So just to clear: he does not retain the title “cardinal” AT ALL?

And if he’s not, why not? And besides…who would have the authority to “uncreate” him?

If a Senator becomes President, we don’t keep calling him Senator.

It’s not that he’s being “uncreated” from his appointment as cardinal. He has in a sense moved beyond such a designation.

True, Too bad the rules don’t allow him, too, to cast a vote for the new Pope, just like former Presidents can still vote for the next President. No, I’m not unhappy with the rules. Just saying… 🙂
