Check out Omaha. Very Catholic city with a dedicated FSSP parish, if that’s what you’re after. Wide variety of Parishes all around the city.

They have Valid Masses…also, anyone may attend an SSPX Mass out of love for the TLM and as long as they do it without supporting schism, it is not sinful. Make sure you get the facts straight…I am not an SSPX’er, but why the heck does everyone beat them up and give them a hard time…I am glad they have done what they have done…without them and their ardent support of the TLM, it might have just become a footnote in our Church’s History…It is strange that so many Catholics willfully go to non-Catholic weddings, Churches, etc…and they don’t see a problem with it…they just love “ecumenism”…hanging out with Prots and other non-Catholics…while at the same time they take every opportunity to bash the SSPX and refuse to participate in anything they are associated with and encourage others to do the same…and the whole irony of this situation is that the SSPX ARE CATHOLIC…and they can’t get any respect from their fellow Catholic bretheren. I for one think it is shameful and totally not necessary…We should be thanking them, not shunning them…and we should be welcoming them back instead of turning them away…I can understand their disdain for Pizza Hut Churches and Clown Masses and Gay Pride Masses and the total lack of Catechesis that has plagued the modern Church

While I don’t want to get this thread off track, it always sort of bothered me that there is no clear answer from the Bishops or the Vatican regarding SSPX Masses. It seems to go something like this:
Q: What’s the status of the SSPX?
A: Their Bishops and clergy are suspended a divinis.
Q: What’s that mean?
A: They have no canonical status.
Q: What’s that mean?
A: None of your business. It’s an internal matter.
Q: So, are their Sacraments valid?
A: Yes, but illicit.
Q: So, does an SSPX Mass fulfill my Sunday obligation?
A: Well … ummm … wringing of hands … errr … we’d rather you didn’t go.
Q: So, it’s a sin for me to go, then?
A: No … It’s not a sin… more wringing of hands As long as your’e only going because you prefer the Latin Mass.
Q: So, it’s perfectly O.K. for me to attend an SSPX Mass, then?
A: No… even more wringing of hands… Uhhh… It’s still illicit… we’d rather you didn’t go.
Q: So, what’s the status of SSPX Masses?

I live in the Bible Belt, but have lived in some cities and been to Masses in some.
Frankly, I think you’ll find very traditional parishes and very liberal ones and a lot of “in betweens” in any large city. Having said that, I will recommend St. Louis. I’ve lived there. Lots and lots of Catholics there; certainly as compared to where I live. Extraordinarily beautiful churches in some parishes. The “Old Cathedral” is incredibly ancient and very Colonial French, but well preserved. The “New Cathedral” (Basilica) is an extraordinarily lavish and impressive Byzantine design and of Byzantine decor. Just mind-blowing. You go in there and you almost think you stepped through the portals of heaven. Even some of the floors are made of tiny mosaic bits of semi-precious stones. Beautiful, wonderful side altars that are practically churches in themselves. Give it a look.

Excellent choirs in various places. Eastern Catholic parishes. TLM parishes.

There’s a reason why STL came to be known as the “Rome of the West”… in fact there’s an excellent blog called “Rome of the West” with lots of pictures and historical background on St. Louis-area churches, not just in the city, but in adjacent suburban areas of MO and the IL Metro-East as well.

There are 3 old-style Catholic parishes in my hometown of Streator, Illinois. Better hurry if you want to see them as the goons at the diocese want them all torn down. LaSalle-Peru, IL also has many old churches.

Omaha has a very active and large Catholic population and an excellent Catholic school system. Low unemployment. One of the best cities to raise children. Safe. Excellent cultural life available. New bishop who is very well regarded by the Catholic population. Strong community support for education, Faith and family. High quality, lower cost housing available. Stable economy.

You mean Abp. George Lucas, who came from St. Louis by way of Springfield, Ill. (my diocese). Glad to hear he’s been well received. Hope his replacement here is just as good or better
He’s one of several well-known prelates with St. Louis connections; others include Abp. Timothy Dolan (NYC), Abp. Justin Rigali (Philly), and Abp. Raymond Burke (now in Rome). St. Louis seems to have a pretty good track record when it comes to vocations, so they must be doing something right.

Old St Patrick is one of only a few churches that has the 28 steps that was between Pilate and Our Lord. Also, there is ST. Anthony’s Chapel. Which is 2nd to the Vatican with relics. A piece of the “True Cross” is there also a thorn from the “Crown of Thorns”

Pittsburgh is a hidden jewel for Catholicism! It has alot of history in it as well. Also, Pittsburgh has a treasure of Eastern Rite and Orothodox churches as well. Their domes grace the skylines of our neighborhoods.

I nominate Front Royal, Va. Not exactly a city, but a small town about 70 miles from Washington, DC. Christendom College is there and Human Life International. The parish, St. John the Baptist is very traditional, with a weekly EF Mass and one or two during the week. Lots of homeschoolers. I am counting the months till we are able to move there.
