If you look at that list, most of the things on it are either just simple statements without backing or support from the text of the Mass itself (“represents a departure”,etc.)
And some are just strange:
- Because the New Mass favors the heretical theory that it is THE FAITH of the people and not THE WORDS OF THE PRIEST which makes Christ present in the Eucharist.
How?
- Because six Protestant ministers collaborated in making up the New Mass: George, Jasper, Shepherd, Kunneth, Smith and Thurian.
In a thread I opened recently, I posted how in fact, the schemas of the Mass show that everything that supposedly came as a result of Protestant collaboration was already done much before they came on the scene in 1966.
- Because the insertion of the Lutheran :“Prayer of the Faithful” in the New Mass follows and puts forth the Protestant error that all the people are priests.
The problem is that (a) not all Lutheran Orders had a Prayer of the Faithful, and certainly not in the form that it was incorporated (b) there is ample evidence from schemas, books written by reformers and those advocating liturgical change, even decrees of the Holy Office against innovation before it was legislated that these “Prayers of the Faithful” were not meant to approximate Protestants but to return to a practice believed to have died out in the Roman liturgy, and common to all other liturgies of the East and some in the West.
- Because the New Mass does away with the Confiteor of the priest, makes it collective with the people, thus promoting Luther’s refusal to accept the Catholic teaching that the priest is judge, witness and intercessor with God.
Now we may ask: where does the judgement, witnessing and interceding come from? Evidently from the absolution the priest recites. But it cannot be the priest reciting the Misereatur, because this does not make him unique- the server does so to him as well. If then, one says it is the priest alone reciting the “Indulgentiam”, in the NO as well, the priest alone recites the “Misereatur”
- Because enough Catholic theology has been removed that Protestants can, while keeping their antipathy for the True Roman Catholic Church, use the text of the New Mass without difficulty. Protestant Minister Thurian (co-consultor for the ‘New Mass’ project) said that a fruit of the New mass “will perhaps be that the non-Catholic communities will be ale to celebrate the Lord’s Supper using the same prayers as the Catholic Church.” (La Croix 4/30/69)
Which is a quote divorced form it’s context. Which Protestant denomination has adopted verbatim the NO? None. There is always some change.
- Because the narrative manner of the Consecration in the New Mass infers that it is only a memorial and not a true sacrifice (Protestant Thesis)
We can consider this: who bows when narrating something, and then genuflects in the middle of the narration? If the Words of Consecration were only “narrative” then why would the GIRM itself say things like “partem narrationis dicens quae ad consecrationem calicis pertinet”. It clearly shows that it is called a narrative only as it regards its literary structure but is meant to be consecratory.
- Because Protestants themselves have said “the new Catholic Eucharistic prayers have abandoned the false (sic) perspective of sacrifice offered to God.” (La Croix 12/10/69)
The quote can be seen to be modified and out of context by its very claim. It doesn’t single out one of the Eucharistic Prayers but indicts all. This is clearly quite laughable when one considers, for example, the highly realistic language of EP IV, which in the oblation is more explicit than even the Canon.
- Because beautiful, familiar Catholic hymns which have inspired people for centuries, have been thrown out and replaced with new hymns strongly Protestant in sentiment, further deepening the already distinct impression that one is no longer attending a Catholic function.
Well, this is not really instrinsic to the missal itself, is it? Because the Traditional Missal prescribes no hymns, only Propers - and neither does the NO.
- Because Holy Mother Church canonized numerous English Martyrs who were killed because they refused to participate in a Mass such as the New Mass!
Oh, no! In fact, the only Anglican service of the period that could be considered to have a close format with the NO was the 1549 BCP. But all the canonized martyrs were martyred either when the Latin Mass was still being used, or under the 1552/9 BCP’s which are NOTHING like the NO (a a simple perusal will show).
There are other numerous examples throughout the so-called reasons, very few of which can actually claim to be decent arguments
