Hi All,

I hope this can be posted in this section if not please move it to an appropriate place.

I invite all of you to list your favourite traditional Hymns. I think it will be a great resource for all those who want to have a collection , learn and listen to them.

My favourites are,

Holy God we praise thy name
Soul of my Saviour,
Be thou my vision,
Blessed Assurance,
God of mercy and compassion,
Shepherd me O Lord …etc

I just can’t get enough of Catholic Hymns , I want more and I don’t know many hymns. I am hoping many of you will post your favourites here so that I can search for them and download or buy the CD etc. You are all welcome to post even if the hymns are not “Catholic” for example Amazing grace .

Is there anyone who is crazy about Hymns?

Joe

Here are some:

Holy, Holy, Holy
God, We Praise You
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
Attende Domine
Come, Holy Ghost
All Creatures of Our God and King
Father, We Thank Thee Who Hast Planted
I Received the Living God
Hills of the North, Rejoice
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
All Glory, Laud and Honor
Pange Lingua
Veni Creator Spiritus
At that First Eucharist
Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
By All Your Saints Still Striving
Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether
Draw Near
The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns
Now, Let Your Servant Go In Peace

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth,
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the Body and the Blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six wingèd seraph,
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!

When I think of my favorites, they seem to fall into two catagories - the ones that are great hymns, and the ones that have memories of some kind attached. In any case, here is my list:

Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Come Down O Love Divine
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
St Patrick’s Breastplate
The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended (this was sung at my grandmothers, funeral, and her mother’s and grandmother’s).
In The Deep Mid-Winter
This Is My Father’s World
Jerusalem
Ye Watchers And Ye Holy Ones

Wao, This is great! So many of them ! I already started looking for them in youtube.

Thanks to you all for the lists!

🙂

God Bless you,
Joe

I’m not going to post a list yet, but just a comment. I am a euphonium player, and I use hymn tunes (I have a long list) as warmup exercises, gradually taking them through higher and higher keys. Beats Arban exercises any day.

@Patrick: Great bunch of links!

Patrick,

Awesome list. Yes I mentioned that i don’t understand latin but I do have a collection of gregorian chant with most of the hymns that you listed. I never knew that we can classify them as Cistercian and Byzantine etc… I am gonna look for the difference.

I like the list in your second post as well… But why did you mention that let all the mortal flesh keep silence is not a hymn ? I was thinking it is a hymn!

God bless you,
With prayers,
Joe

There are actually different chant traditions in both Eastern and Western Churches, just as there are different liturgical rites. Gregorian chant was not the only form of plainchant that existed. 🙂

By that I meant that the version familiar to most people (the one that goes like this - the tune is actually that of a French medieval folk melody called Picardy) is not exactly the same as the original chant, known in Greek as Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ (Sigeatō pasa sarx) - which is chanted as a Cherubikon in the Divine Liturgy of St. James as well as in Holy Saturday during the Great Entrance (the one I linked to). 😊

Sure, now that I’ve got some time to reformat the file and plug it in. Names in small caps are tune names (like “New Britain”) as opposed to names of hymns (like “Amazing Grace”).

Edit: Okay, cancel that; the small caps didn’t show up.

BTW, Wiki has a good article on euphoniums. I play an old Conn 86I 4-valve upright bell that was made as a prototype in 1923, which makes it only 11 years younger than my father.
