The PNCC began as a temporary measure, to meet a perceived pastoral emergency, NOT to leave the Catholic Church. Over time, it took on its own momentum.

Thus, it didn’t matter when Rome later appointed PolAm bishops, when Rome allowed Polish American parishes to have the Mass in (Polish) vernacular, or even when we had a Polish pope. The PNCC organization goes on, only now they usually drop the “P”, to attract others.

Actually, the Pope said essentially the same thing in the article I linked to above:

“The Holy Father also noted that institutes and religious communities which are used to celebrating the Extraordinary Form ‘have today found their own stability of number and of life.’”

My take is that talks between the Vatican and the SSPX have already ceased and will never be resumed. As for SP, I think that once Pope Emeritus Benedict passes away, Pope Francis will issue a new directive that is far less favorable to Traditionalists. And that the FSSP and ICKSP will be suppressed or otherwise weakened.
Why would the death of Pope Benedict have anything to do with this? He is no longer the reigning pope and exercises no leadership role in the Church aside from his personal moral authority.

The Ecclesia Dei commission was suppressed in January and its functions transferred to the COngregation for the Doctrine of Faith, not to the Congregation for Divine Worship. This is a sign that issues of doctrine are now the principal concern. These may or may not be related to liturgy, but the issues with liturgy have all been resolved with several groups that use the 1962 Missal. If the SSPX had problems beyond that, ED would probably have continued to exist.

On the other issue, there have been changes in the situation brought on by age. The regularization of SSPX will mean a number of unassigned priests will come into the Catholic Church. One way of handling that is a personal prelature, essentially keep doing what you are doing. Even there, more coordination with bishops locally will probably create more tensions. Will renegade churches be reincorporated in to dioceses? This is more of a problem now then it was years ago.

Tatiana,

I have had only one contact with a local SSPX priest, and only a few contacts with laity who attend there.
I haven’t attended the chapel, but occasionally attend one or the other of our diocesan TLMs. I fully support the TLM, and think seminarians should be suggested to consider it. Ideally, parochial school students should attend one TLM Mass with some explanation.

My graduate training and work experience was in social work and organizations.

Since Opus Dei is the only existing personal prelature, you have to look at the history prior to that. It was very much integrated into local Dioceses, fully obedient to local bishops, connected to parishes and religious orders.

Even after becoming a Prelature, they conform (compatible) to some extent to the situation in the territorial diocese. They don’t go where they are not welcome. In my diocese Opus members are active in Diocesan projects, such as prolife, and were prior to being a Prelature…

The prep period for Prelature status went on for years, with no assurance they would become a Prelature.
