Thanks so much to everyone who responded and offered suggestions. Some very interesting and useful tips and suggestions.

Special thanks to MikeDunphy for the info on St. Catherine of Siena in Columbia.

I live 25 miles to the east of our cathedral parish. My local geographic parish is 5 miles to the west of me and that parish has a mission parish to the east of me. This is not Roman Catholic French south Louisiana but predominately protestant Southern Baptist and fundamentalist evangelical protestant country. There is no Catholic church in this town and my kids were openly called witches because we had a pottery statue of St. Francis in our garden, crucifixes in the house, and burned votive candles upon the approach of hurricanes and tornado warnings.

I have been dismayed by the number of cultural adaptations accreted in the parish and in the mission parish to make us at least marginally acceptable to our Protestant neighbors. The same thing went on in our prior geographical parish which was 25 miles south of our cathedral parish I have been accused of being to the right of Ghenghis Khan because I and my family have driven 25 miles one way to attend a reverent OF Catholic cathedral parish. The strictures of what my family had to go through to join the cathedral parish in 1983 have been released and you are free to join whatever parish you want.

There are reverent EF parishes out there. Maybe not at all Masses and maybe not in all ministries. First, pray. Then perservere and pray and do not give upe home…

I do enjoy the EM and I do adhere to more traditional practices in my daily life (No meat on Friday, pray the LOH daily, receive the Eucharist from a clergy in the mouth/not hand), but those are all choices that can be made while still remaining a Novus Ordo Catholic. I would be perfectly happy attending Mass at this parish if the body were more reverent and respectful. Unfortunately that is not the case. And the irreverence has reached a level that I can officially say is interfering with my ability to worship.
I am no Canon lawyer, but I believe the change between the 1917 Code and the 1983 Code loosened up the requirement that you attend Mass in your geographic parish. It is important (to you and the Church) that you belong to a parish as we are all part of the Body of Christ, and need to live that out. On the other hand, if things have gotten to the point where you cannot ignore it or let it go, then you need to find some means ofg balance; if that is attending a Mass elsewhere all the time (pick one parish) or periodically attending elsewhere, then by all means do so.

As to the Knights, there are good councils and not so good councils. But it is a deep part of human nature that people do not like what they consider “outsiders” coming in and telling them how to change; and that is nothing particular to the Church. Frankly, I would not go there. If you attend, try to do so with humilty and love, and support what work they do. And if you can’t do that, then find something else. There is plenty to do, and it is not necesarily all within the confines of a parish.

You might, in your local parish, try to find someone else to pray the LOTH with; I learned it in community and still miss that a whole lot. And as an aside, the LOTH is not “traditional”, as it was pretty much restricted to priests and professed religious before Vatican 2; the documents sought to bring the Hours back to what they had once been, and get it filtered down to the laity. One of the directives of the Ciouncil that worked well.

It is hard to be surrounded with people who don’t get it. It is also easy to slip into judgementalism. Look for the positive in your parish while you are there; try to bring your practice and understanding of the faith to others gently, seek the good, and pray for all. God has you there for a reason, and you may never discern exactly what it is; it may be for your good or the good of others. We are called to be leaven; but the call is not necessarily easy.

**Many Trad’s feel trapped in a liturgy that they do not like, BUT we have been there for almost 40 years. **No I don’t try to fit in. I just attend Mass and pray. Our local FSSP expansion, to a closer church, has hit a “snag”. Seems its about some problem with a Building Use agreement. Seems kind of flakey to me but guess the Lawyers have got to have some justification for their existance.

We have been faithful to the church for decades but its been rather tough. We are so close to having a weekly TLM that I can taste it. According to the FSSP its just been postponed.

Excellent answer!!!

I am a Traditional Catholic…raised in the pre-Vatican II Church. For the past 40 yrs., I’ve had to attend a Mass that I find a Banal & tawdry celebration of self. It hasn’t been easy, sometimes I would leave Mass angry & a few times, I found myself with tears in my eyes as the priest sauntered up & down the aisles, shaking hands & sharing a few words with members of the laity who were seated on the ends of pews. I remember well, the first time I saw the Liturgical “dancers” & how I felt when we were told, from the pulpit, to pray for gay couples with adopted children…“as they are families, too”.

I must admit that, as the 20th century turned into the 21st, I found myself missing Mass for reasons (excuses) that would never have kept me away from the TLM. So my advice to the OP, is just keep going & doing the best you can & PRAY FOR A LATIN MASS in your area. Write to your Bishop &, if that doesn’t work, write to Ecclesia Dei. (It’s helpful to have a few others in your parish sign the letter). Explain that you aren’t asking for a parish that is exclusivly TLM., but would just like a TLM Mass or two… My Pastor went to the FSSP. & learned how to pray the Mass of the Ages.

There is no change, as the 1983 code defines parish as being territorial, unless for special circumstances the bishop establishes it otherwise:

**Canon 518 **As a general rule a parish is to be territorial, that is it embraces all the Christian faithful within a certain territory; whenever it is judged useful, however, personal parishes are to be established based upon rite, language, the nationality of the Christian faithful within some territory or even upon some other determining factor.

However, though one is a member of a specific parish, usually by virtue of where one lives, one may attend Mass anywhere he or she prefers. There has never been any restriction on that.

We were talking about this very thing last night at RCIA where we were studying the Order of the Mass. Father did say that we could look forward to some changes in the litergy next year that will make it more like the Mass in pre-VII times. It will be interesting to see. The proposed changes are on the CCB website.

The Nashville Diocese is not in very good shape right now. The only diocesan Latin Mass is at Assumption Parish on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The priest is flown in from out of state to do this Mass. I don’t think there are any plans to have a local priest take over at this time, but I could be wrong. Last I heard, some priests expressed interest but then something happened and it hasn’t been mentioned since. The only other Mass available is the SSPX. I am not sure what side of Nashville you live but if it is on the North side, there is a Latin Mass in Horse Cave, KY every Sunday. Some people from Nashville do go there occassionally. Oh, I almost forgot, there was Columbia. I am not sure if they are still having the Mass there, or not. You may try calling. I believe the parish was St. Catherine’s.

I am not sure how far you are from the Knoxville Diocese, but they have a few Latin Masses in Cleveland, Clinton, and Farragut. The Memphis Diocese also has a few Latin Masses in Memphis and Bartlett. The SSPX also has a Chapel in Memphis.

It sometimes helps to get to know a few elderly/semi-retired/retired priests. Some of them will say do say the Latin Mass privately and it is OK to attend teh priest’s private Mass. If you get to know a few of the ‘better’ elderly priests, even if they aren’t already saying the Latin Mass privately you might be able to convince them to do so. You may even be able to get them to be willing to do Mass at one of the local Churches afterwards, providing you can find a pastor willing to let it happen. The Bishop’s sentiments on this will play a big part too. Not to many want to go up against the Bishop if they think he is not in favor of it.
Small correction, Fr. Orr who used to say TLM in Clinton (when he was pastor there) and before that in Farragut, is now assistant pastor at Holy Ghost in Knoxville and has TLM every Sunday at 1:30. They also have adoration from time to time. It is a very active community.

Mike, I feel your pain. I’m a Chicago-born Catholic who had the great good fortune to belong to St. John Cantius parish (BEST. PARISH. EVER. Father Phillips…don’t you think the Canons Regular need an apostolate in the South? It worked for the Poor Clares…)before I moved. While I LOVE LOVE LOVE NASHVILLE, I do miss SJC!

That said, the parish you refer to that has the Extraordinary Form once a month, also has very properly done Ordinary Form Masses. Also, when my husband sent an email to Bishop Choby thanking him for the EF, the bishop responded that he hopes to make it more available, so there’s more coming. Depending on where you live, I believe there’s an EF in Columbia, too.

The Traditional Latin Mass has brought me more Peace & Joy than I can express. It’s wrong that we have to go through all of this, just to find one that we can attend. I’ve been blessed as the Mass of the Ages is celebrated once a week about 7 miles from our home. I found out about it accidentally, as not one of the 8 other parishes in our city, has shared the fact with their parishioners that we now have the choice between the Latin Mass & the Novus Ordo. I cannot blame our Bishop, as he is very supportive of the TLM.

Though he was only about 10 yrs. old when Vatican II took place, he has learned to say the Tridentine Mass, himself. Scroll down for pictures of the TLM that he celebrated the day after Summorum Pontificum granted permission for the old Mass.

Ahh… Thank you Chatter163!
That was precisely what I was looking for!

Awesome. Thank you Missalthumper.
I have met Bishop Choby on a few occassions and I had a feeling he was a proponent of the EF.
