Being quiet doesn’t mean they’re more reverent.

Back before Vatican II, people said the Rosary, or fell asleep.

Praying the Rosary is a separate devotion from attending Mass/

We’re dressed respectfully, certainly. Not nessecarily in poodle skirts and ‘rat pack’ suits, but modest and suitable clothes for the occasion, certainly

Augustinian that is nonsene

People should dress more respectful for Mass than anything else

When I grew up in the 50’s, people attended Mass by the priest who said it the fastest.

Then it was a race to their cars at the end.

It wasn’t more reverent unless you made it so, and the number of devote Catholics who took their faith to a higher level, were no greater than there are today.

Before Vatican II, saying the rosary during Mass was commended as a laudable practice by a lot of Catholics, including Pope Leo XIII in his Suprémi Apostolátus Offício work in 1986 on the rosary.

People did fall asleep a lot more during Latin Mass. It was quiet, people had their comfortable coats in the pews and the burning incense ate up a lot of the oxygen, slowing people down.

Actually the devotion of praying the Rosary, was commended, but not at Mass and Priests addressed the issue then.

The only reason people prayed the Rosary during Mass, was because they had no other connection to the liturgy other than to sit quiet in their pews, or say the Rosary.

Some, fell asleep.

There is a good reason why Vatican II was called and why the Mass was reformed.

The NO is actually closer to the original Mass of early Christians, than the TLM

St. Zelie Martin prayed the rosary at mass.

We shouldn’t be aiming to have the mass more similar to it’s earlier stages. Liturgy is organic, and forms slowly and carefully throughout the ages. Pope Benedict XVI compares it to a living, breathing organism. He thinks it should never be taken back to it’s early days.

First, the Latin Rite from before Pope Paul VI reforms seems to represent more clearly the doctrines of the Catholic Church that have been taught since its beginning. I’m not saying the current form does not represent doctrine, though.

Moreover, It contains rituals that are done in such a way (with precision, seriousness, and respect) that the Sacrament evidently pours grace all over the place it’s being celebrated.

Finally, there are many prayers and rituals, mainly in the Canon, that are from the first centuries, which make them a real cultural treasure for us to witness.

That is very attractive as opposed to modern and robotic in a fast food sort of way.👍

Just warning you, out of charity, The Council of Trent condemned saying that mass ought to be said in the vernacular language ONLY.

Just a heads up 😀

Aaaaand of course the thread has devolved. Sad.

I like TLM Mass sometimes for the reasons I said. I also like ribeye steaks sometimes.

In a couple hours I’m going to OF Mass at a cramped little room at the Newman Center with a hodgepodge of pews and chairs, everybody in jeans and sweatshirts, and a couple of college kids will likely be chatting right outside the room door.

The room will be pretty full (it almost always is), Jesus will show up anyway, it will be fine, and then i will probably go to McDonald’s

Yes it is unfortunate that this is what usually happens when a thread is started in praise of the TLM. Those that are anti Traditional show up to subtly or not so subtly display there antiness lol. It would seem that many of them are from older age groups. I guess it is true that Tradition is for the young. 😀

The breaking of bread and sharing the cup was good enough for the Lord…he didnt call on Omaha Steaks or the awsrd winning vintners to institute the Eucharist.

I’d avoid McD’s. I’d find a nice traditional diner and have traditional burger with real beef! 😀
