Tridentine Mass for the first time

I am planning to go to my first Latin Mass this Sunday. Well I went when I was in grade 4 with my parents but it was by accident, thinking the mass would be in english šŸ„“. This time itā€™s my decision going.

Do all Latin Mass follow the same procedure?

I was thinking of printing this guide that I found on Google. I emailed the parish but still waiting for their response whether I can use this guide.

I want to bring my girlfriend to the Latin Mass, I will have to get her a veil. šŸ˜Š

Any advise to the Tridentine Mass newbies? We are 23 and 25 years old, weā€™re excited to go for the first time ā˜ŗļø!
 
Congrats. I just went to my first Latin mass 6 months ago and love it. Yes they do all follow the same format, more so that Novus Ordo . For example, there is the same Gospel said at every Latin mass, whereas with Novus ORdo it isnā€™t uncommon to have multiple Gospels for the Priest to choose from.

Many Latin parishes have veils you can use. The one I attend does and most women just use the veils that are there. SO you may not need to get your girlfriend one, just ask the parish office.

Only advice Iā€™d give is dont spend too much time looking at the missal or text. Just let yourself soak it in. THe first time I went I didnā€™t have a missal or written text so just looked up the whole time and it was incredible. THe next few times I had the missal/text and looked down too much which took away from the experience. Best advice I got was to not worry so much about what is being said and looking up every translation because (a) its impossible to follow everything anyway in the beginning and (b) it takes away from the beauty of the experience. An FSSP priest on Catholic Answers youtube video said same thing. They told me to read the missal before attending (including Gospel) and that after Iā€™ve been going for a while, then start to follow along and look up/down. It was great suggestion because it let me really soak in the experience in the first few times I went instead of having my nose buried in the missal and missing the beauty of it all.
 
It will have the Asperges only if itā€™s a high mass. If itā€™s a low mass it begins with the Confiteor. I hope you like it. I Still love the Latin mass!
 
Agree with what @Aquinas11 said- remember, this was designed for an illiterate audience - soak in the beauty and the mystery šŸ™‚
 
  1. Yes, generally - the mass is exactly the same every time (with a few exceptions). But this should work for Sunday
  2. that guide is OK. Itā€™s better than nothing, so go ahead and print it out. HOWEVER, if they have a little red books at the Mass, then use those because those little missals are great.

Do you know if itā€™s going to be a Low Mass or a High Mass, Sung Mass, etc? What kind of Mass did they advertise? (just curious)

As other posters said, donā€™t worry about following along exactly in the guide you have or the Missal. I wish I had been told that my first time.

Study the Mass outside of Mass; pray the Mass when youā€™re there. Take it all in.

Where I go, maybe half the women wear chapel veils. Itā€™s not a requirement.
 
Looking at the schedule looks like I can go to Latin mass 4 times a week šŸ˜Š
 
You donā€™t have to wear any veil or know any secret handshake. Just go and watch respectfully.
 
The parish will likely have red booklets available for you to use during Mass, but as others have advised itā€™s best for your first time to just watch the priest.
 
Donā€™t sit in the front. Bring your missal with you and follow along. St stand up when everybody stands up. Sit down when everybody sits down. Kneel when everybody kneels. If you do this then everything should be ok.
 
Low Mass with schola? Isnā€™t that a contradiction in terms? This isnā€™t a Missa Cantata?
 
You only provided us with three images of the online ordinary, but thatā€™s probably good for you.

Hopefully this is a Missa Cantata and not a Missa Lecta (Low Mass), otherwise youā€™ll likely be very confused. Low Mass is said almost entirely silently, thereā€™s no music whatsoever, and itā€™s generally a bad Mass to make your first experience of the Extraordinary Form.

Either way since itā€™s your first time I strongly suggest you stop worrying and just ā€œsoak it upā€. Go there with as little paperwork as possible. Find a pew, say your prayers, offer up your sacrifices, then sit back and take in the liturgy. Stand, sit, and kneel, as you see others doing. But donā€™t try to constantly follow along in a missal. You will get lost, and you will get frustrated. Let it go! On your second, third, fourth, etc. visit to the E.F. you can start learning the ordinary.

Thatā€™s a good point. My first time going was very confusing to me because I tried to follow word for word in the missal without the propers and during High Mass. Needless to say, I was completely lost. My second time was better, because I purchased my own Latin missal and had studied the postures, prayers, and cues for several weeks. Now I attend every Sunday, and am slowly weaning off the missal šŸ˜Š

Yes. But that is what a Missa Cantata is. Itā€™s a Low Mass with a schola.

There are only three kinds of masses in the Extraordinary Form
  • Low Mass
  • High Mass
  • Solemn High Mass
Missa Cantata is a variant of the Low Mass
While, a Pontifical Solemn High Mass is a variant of the Solemn High Mass.
