Amazing. Secularism is raging in the UK but the numbers in the church are growing overall. Interesting how that happens 👍

Hmm… “tripling” sounds very impressive, but it may be misleading. Remember, we are talking about six women entering religious life in 2009 and 17 women entering religious life in 2011. We are only given those two years, and have no context to evaluate the numbers. Was 2009 abnormally low? Is 2012 unusually high? Is the increase actually a trend or is it a blip? How does the figure of 17 new sisters, out of 5 million Catholics, compare to the number of new sisters in other countries?

I’m not dismissing the news, but I think its hard to evaluate in the absence of additional information.

I appreciate the last clarification from you Dale …

And wonder where you got the statistics?

Frankly, I wish I knew a place for such statistics overall/globally.

It seems to me that I do see “blips” of evidence for a turnaround in the vocations crisis in the West. But I really would love a fuller picture.

If anyone knows any good articles/links about this, I would be grateful …

The number of women entering religious life in England and Wales, in 2009 and 2011, is listed in the Catholic Herald article which was the basis for the news report cited in the first post. Here is a link to the CH article:

The estimate of the number of Catholics in England and Wales comes from the BBC, but The Telegraph and The Guardian also had similar figures.

For persons in the US, Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate is a provider of reliable statistics. They also have some worldwide statistics

Unfortunately, often the most interesting statistics are hard to locate. 😦

There is the Vatican’s Yearbook. It’s not particularly useful for UK specific stats and is compiled and published retrospectively so 2010 is the latest year with data available.

Still, might be useful for future reference.

has a summary.
