"True Devotion To Mary" by St. Louis de Montfort

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this devotion or has read this book? It sounds like we are to devote ourselves completely to Mother Mary however it made me a little uncomfortable because I don’t want to make the mistake of worshiping Her over God? I know their can be a fine line. I was hoping someone could help explain this better or give thoughts on the book/devotion.🙂

What I’ve taken from the book is this:

#1: Completely devote yourself to Mother Mary, and be willing to do whatever it is She calls you to do.

#2: Have complete faith in Mother Mary, and trust her 100%

#3: (here’s expressing your concerns) Christ is the ultimate end of all devotions, meaning that by devoting yourself to Mother Mary, you know that She’ll lead you to the Path that pleases our God, Jesus Christ. By pleasing our Mother and Queen through devotion to Her, you’ll please Jesus Christ. And by trusting in Her 100%, you know that She’ll help you through prayer to Christ and through the power that He gives Her. So by devoting yourself to Mother Mary, you’ll be seeking to please God and be lead to the Path that pleases Him the most. So, in essence, you’re devoted to Christ through devotion to Mother Mary. You’re the sheep, She’s the ultimate pastor, and Christ is the pasture She’s leading you to, so to speak.

#4: Mother Mary is simply an intermediary. She’s the mediatrix between man and Christ (just as Christ is the Mediator between man and God the Father). “To Jesus through Mary” best sums this up. Devotion to Her is knowing that She’ll pray for you, She’ll lead you to God, She’ll help you in your times of trouble out of Her motherly love, She’ll shower the Graces of God on you, and She’ll guide you and answer your prayers, because Christ has given Her this authority. Know that everything She does for you comes from Christ through Her.

She’s basically Christ’s Representative. Instead of talking to the King, you speak to the King’s Representative. The King’s Representative then asks the King to do what you asked if the Representative Herself can’t do what you asked out of Her own power. If the Representative can do what you asked, then it will be done by Her, with the mercy and consent of the King. By honoring the Representative, you’re honoring the King.

So She’s never worshiped here, and She never should be worshiped. She only should be honored and thanked. I usually say in thanksgiving “Praise you, my God, and thank you, my Mother”
 
^ yes, simply put, we don’t worship her, we ask her intercession.
 
I also use a booklet called “Praying Your Rosary with St. Louis de Montfort and Pope John Paul II”.
 
I had thought about this devotion to Our Lady when I first heard about it a while back, but all of a sudden (starting last night) I’ve been seeing this everywhere…I think maybe someone’s trying to give me a hint, lol.

I am thinking about starting to do this devotion in the spring (I believe that’s when St. Louis suggested you do it, based on the feast he liked to use for it), but first I need to get to praying a daily Rosary so I’d be able to fulfill the requirements of the consecration.

Also nice that it its requirements fulfill the requirements for the Brown Scapular, which my confessor has suggested I start using.

You need to read the Book.

St Louis Marie De Montfort doesnt advocate Praying to Mary as if she is GOD.

There is ONE GOD - the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost. Every Catholic has to believe that DOGMA or they arent a Catholic. Period.

St Louis Marie De Montfort Grignon is a Canonized Saint. He would never have been Canonized if he didnt hold to this Foundation Dogma.

Every prayer must have as its destination , GOD. Whether it leaves your lips and mind directly headed there or if you ask a Saint to Intercede with GOD on your behalf.

Catholics pray to GOD through the Intercession of Saints hoping that two things occur.

One - that the Merits of the Saint (who obviously pleased GOD or they wouldnt be a Saint)
Will carry additional Weight with him and thus enhance its chances of being granted.

And two - that due to the fact that our approach is a humble approach - we appear as the Publican - with an attitude of unworthiness - that this humility also will enhance our chances of it being granted.

Now as to the Blessed Virgin Mary - she is the Greatest of All Saints. So her assistance is greatly esteemed by Catholics because of her merits before GOD. The Blessed Virgin Mary - being the Immaculate Conception - was so pleasing to GOD because of her eternal willingness to conform every single action of hers perfectly to the Will of GOD. So if the Blesssed Virgin Mary appears - whatever she tells us is the Will of GOD. A Cattholic can always count on her to lead them closer to GOD. Every action she performs is out of that conformity.

The Blessed Virgin Mary isnt GOD. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the complete slave of GOD in every way.

You have to understand the concept. Catholics pray to GOD and GOD alone. If we ask a Saint to Pray for us - we are not praying to the Saint as GOD we are petitioning the Saint to intercede with GOD on our behalf.

No Catholic theologian has ever advocated praying to any Catholic Saint as a replacement for GOD. That would be a violation of the First Commandment and any Catholic who did that would be obligated to confess that as a Mortal Sin against the First Commandment.

There is no fine line.

There is ONE GOD in Three Divine Persons.

Yes, there is a fine line, and deMontfort comes closer to crossing that line than any author I’ve ever read.

His writings, in my opinion, belong to the heavy sentimentality of his era and do not speak to modern minds terribly well. Take a look at it, and if you find yourself just not “getting” it, don’t feel badly. You won’t be the first one.
 
One of the greatest spiritual books ever written.

The title of the consecration if im not mistaken is: ‘total consecration to Jesus through Mary’.

There is another book called “The Glories of Mary” written by St Alphonsus Ligouri - founder of the Redemptorists which likewise explains Marian Devotion. These are the two best I have come across.
 
When we talk about consecrating or giving ourselves to Mary or say prayers like, “Sweet Heart of Mary be my salvation!” What we are talking about is giving ourselves completely to Jesus through her.

Where else does Mary ever lead people? Straight to her son. At the wedding in Cana, the people were telling Mary that the wine was out and her response was, “Do whatever He tells you.” We learn here that Our Lady sends us directly to Jesus and we honor her as Jesus did as his mother.

Another book recommendation to add to the list: “Echo of God”, A Commentary for Beginners on St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary”, by Father Lance Harlow. Fr. Harlow does an excellent job of cutting through the heavy archaic sentimental language. I’m a third of the way through the book.

“The “Echo of God” is a most valuable study guide for understanding and living the lifestyle of true devotion with it’s simple explanation and application of Grignion de Montfort’s inspired principles of Marian spirituality—which is always Christocentric!” A quote from the book’s description on the back cover.
