True presense in the eucharist

Ok everyone. About distinguishing between the Eucharist and Holy Communion. Apparently, I am out of my league here. I thought they were one and the same. So, what’s the difference? Is it simply that one is the ‘object’ and the other is the ‘action’?

Holy Communion is part of the liturgy of the Eucharist.

Also, since we use the word Eucharist to mean both the celebration and the consecrated elements, you could say that Holy Communion is the act of receiving Eucharist.

What ought to be Extrodinary is factually; very ordinary

You are all correct here, there can never be enough show of love for our Lord’s presence.
Be patient with others, it is true you can never know what is in the heart.
Some folks may just no show it like you’d expect. As a convert to the RCC, I am on fire at Mass, rarely getting thru it without a few tears. But I have had to learn to not judge people who ‘seem bored’…

It is true that many Catholics do not believe strongly in the Real Presence.
What to do ?
YOU BE the light to them, let them learn from YOUR example.
Don’t be afraid, or too shy, to let your love shine thru for the Eucharist. If anyone does not like your showing it , tough for them.

What else to do ?
YOU educate these people who may seem disinterested or (dare i say ?) too damn lazy to learn about their precious Faith, about the treasure they have in the Holy Mass.
PLEASE–have you parish get some copies of 2 books . These should be required reading for every Catholic. PLEASE, if you want to help people know what the Mass is about, get these into their hands. If they won’t read them, them You read it to them–set up a ‘Eucharist discussion night’ or something like that.

two-hour read-Most excellent modern book on the Holy Euchaist in print

2–The Holy Mass

Rebecca if I could receive our dear Lord’s body ,Blood,Soul,and Divinity while lying prostrate on the floor after coming up the aisle on my knees I would do so but according to the modern rubrics it is discouraged and not practical.
When I was an altar boy assisting at mass prior to Vatican 2 the faithful knelt at a communion rail,a white cloth covering their hands and received ONLY on the tongue.As the altar boy I moved along side the priest holding a paten under the communicants’ chins so that not one speck of Jesus would fall to the ground.
As a 7-12 year old I was enthralled at the majesty,dignity and reverence of this manner of communicating.The Faithful received with closed eyes and consumed Him at the communion rail before returning to their pews.As a CHILD I could witness the reverence these people,the priest and my fellow altar boys felt before the Holy Eucharist.
Please God bring back communion rails,kneeling and receiving ONLY on the tongue.Nowadays and I don’t mean to be blasphemous,its like lining up at a food court.It’s no wonder only 20%(the same number who attend mass)of all Catholics believe in the Real Presence.

I see people receive on both the hand and the tongue, with the same apparent disinterest.
As Pope Benedict has said, it is not about the way we receive, but rather about the faith that is present when we recieve.
As for what is going on at the time, if I had my way, all other activity would cease from the time of Consecration until the altar vessels are cleansed.
There would be nothing that would distract our direct attention to and adoration of our Lord in the Eucharist.
I asked our choir and liturgy comittees if we could dispense with the songs then so people werent fumbling with books, etc.
I think they thought I was nuts. They’re probably right,
I’m crazy for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Do whatever you want to show honor and respect, be what you want others to be in your actions.
Temper that only with care to not draw attention to yourself.
We should all find a way to express to God our awe at His coming to us. Find your form of expression and stick with it. Personally I like to hold my hands up in front of my face in prayer from the time of Consecration until the Eucharist is removed from the altar. The entire time is a time of personal adoration for me, broken only by the prayers we say together during that part of the Mass.
The extreme moment for me is when I receive Him from the hands of the priest. Say what you want about receiving in the hands vs the tongue—I get to hold the living Christ in my own hands for just a moment, to adore Him-That Close-, before His body joins mine.
I rarely make it thru this without tears. I suppose I get my share of looks too…i really don’t care what others think at that point. I refuse to be ashamed of my love for Jesus, He has given me way too much for me deny Him.

In Bishops termnology : “extrodinary ministers” are those who in addition to priest and deacons present; fill [a supposed actual need] and distribute either the Consecrated Host or the Consecrated Wine to other lay folk.

Only Ordained Priest / Bishops have the God Given Power, authority and mandate to cooperate with God Himself in making Christ present in Catholic Holy Communion.

“Eucharist” and Holy Communion can be synomous terms. “Eucharist” can additionally refer to the Holy SACRIFICE of th Mass.

If we really believe in the true presense then why don’t we do things like remove our shoes or never turn our backs or prostrate ourselves before receiving communion, etc? If Jesus truly appeared before us would we not instinctively do these types of things? Our family gets a mixture of odd looks, or compliments, for genuflecting before receiving communion. Interiorly I try to imagine myself being physically more humble in mass. I wish I could act out openly without appearing “odd” or “arrogant” in doing so.
Incidentally, thank you so much for all of the (name removed by moderator)ut I’ve been getting on my other threads. Your comments have been great and helpful. It’s such a blessing to be able to communicate with people who are so into the faith.

PJM, That’s what we do. We kneel when 2nd in line. Doesn’t take any extra time and being near the front I don’t feel that it’s too obvious as we have the line of poeple behind us blocking us from view. I have read that Pope Benedict requires one to receive on the tongue while kneeling. So there is my example to follow.

So, the Eucharist is ALIVE !!!

A child might ask—Lord , how long do you stay with us when we receive you in Holy Communion ?
Jesus would probably smile and answer— As long as you want me to be with you, it is not me who leaves you , but rather you who leaves Me…

I froze, the only thing I was able to do was say “” Lord please forgive me.’’ I was afraid to take the Holy communion and after the mass I went to the Priest and wanted to go to confession but he said there’s nothing to confess and it was an accident and nobody is to blame. Is it correct just to put the Host back into the container? I don’t know if the Host are new or if it was offered previously from an earlier mass? Thanks.

I was pleasantly surprised the other day when one of our RCIA members, one who is to be brought into the Church this Easter, received her blessing from our priest during communion, and as she walked back to her pew, stopped by the Extraordinary Minister distributing the Precious Blood, and bowed before returning to her seat.

This is the way that we are instructed. The Extra Ordinary Minister is to consume the Host.

And no, confession is not necessary for the person whose bump caused the Host to fall.

Hi Rebecca

I firmly believe that the Lord is present at Mass. As a sign of my desire to reverence the Lord I kneel to receive (when I have that choice) and I don’t let myself be annoyed by what others think. I know why I receive this way (to honour my Lord).

When I am working I go to early mass in my parish and the priest distributes communion under both species but everyone just forms a line. In this case I join the line and keep my head bowed in prayer as I approach.

I would much prefer to receive kneeling but each to his own as long as they truly receive with all their mind, heart, and soul the how doesn’t matter.

Let me be the first to thank you for this wonderful pamphlet!!! I loved the words that Catalina wrote and I could feel the joy she experienced as the Blessed Virgin shared her thoughts with Catalina. I’m working as the head of the Liturgy in an upcoming ACTS retreat, and was looking for something to share with our retreatants… you’ve just made my job much easier!!!
