Christ Himself was a radical progressive who upset the social order of His time.
what would progressives do if he came today? would they welcome him with open arms?

do you think Jesus would scrape his gospel to be politically correct?

what would they say when he called them to repent of their sins

Jesus is not a progressive in the order of progressives today!

Who are the so-called “progressives” of this day? Is there a single definition?
do you think Jesus would scrape his gospel to be politically correct?
You are conflating progressivism with political correctness. That said, it is not wrong to want to remove nastiness from speech, though I agree we go way overboard.
what would they say when he called them to repent of their sins
Notice how He called on the adulteress to repent her sins after He rescued her from the throng wanting to stone her? How He instantly saved the Good Thief? How He came to heal, without first asking if they’d fully observed the Sabbath or tithed or whatever?
Jesus is not a progressive in the order of progressives today!
You are missing the word “some” between “of” and “progressives”. But true, He isn’t for the most part; He is, after all God incarnate and we are mere mortals. He was far more radical than today’s progressives. We’d likely crucify Him all over again if He came today and asked us to live more humbly (you mean we can’t have two gas hog SUVs?), to ensure everyone had adequate medical care, a roof over their head, clean water to drink and clean air to breathe, and to truly help the poor and downtrodden.

In fact I suspect the very people who would want to crucify Him today are the conservatives and Neo-Liberals who want to conserve the right to rape the planet, exploit workers in poor countries, concentrate the planet’s wealth and justify owning two SUVs, and a huge oversized home.

The progressives? I’m not so sure.

The US Founding Fathers were radical progressives who spat on centuries of Christian monarchical tradition. They were the uber liberals of the day.
Not sure how broadly you intend to paint with this brush…

Progressiveness is a characteristic that characterizes folks who strive to improve.

That’s my definition.

IMO, some folks do it too seriously and some folks don’t do it seriously enough.

You can’t, but on the other hand how can you justify Christians having anti-Gospel values?
if they espouse true ant-gospel messages, you can’t; but again the devil is in the details.

are they anti-gospel values or just not solutions to progressive liking? would you agree with the statement, that if any would not work, neither should he eat?
That is painting with too broad a brush.
i don’t control the brush, the progressive movers do.

Who are the so-called “progressives” of this day? Is there a single definition?
not definition, but definite controllers manipulating the progressive message, read the news and you will know who they are

progressives turn on their own when they are not pc.
Notice how He called on the adulteress to repent her sins after He rescued her from the throng wanting to stone her? How He instantly saved the Good Thief? How He came to heal , without first asking if they’d fully observed the Sabbath or tithed or whatever?
and what did the leaders of the jewish temple say, same would be said today except the leaders would be progressive leaders.
You are missing the word “some” between “of” and “progressives”.
have you noticed how progressives are eating their own? for many, progressivism has passed them by. but they still cling to past ideas. the past is now the enemy of the progressive, what they haven’t changed that is.
if He came today and asked us to live more humbly (you mean we can’t have two gas hog SUVs?), to ensure everyone had adequate medical care, a roof over their head, clean water to drink and clean air to breathe, and to truly help the poor and downtrodden.
if he came today, he would preach the same message he preached before.
The progressives? I’m not so sure.
they all would, especially today’s progressives

do you think the progressives of yesteryear would be welcomed in the progressive movement today? would they limit free speech? abuse the church? allow abortion? pro-claim same-sex-marriage legal?

don’t confuse those who hijacked the progressive movement with true progressivism.

That is a logical fallacy. You are claiming that because anti-theists like something, that something must be evil.
Actually, this ^ strawman is the only fallacy here.

You’d have to be living in a cave not to realize that the Progressive wing is home to the “nones” and atheists and anti-theists. Or do I have to post a picture of a Bernie Sanders rally.

Progressives are always high minded. But, today, they have no workable solutions to any of the problems that they would like to solve, presumably because they are idealists, not realists.

As to natural law. It would be laughable to claim today that abortion, euthanasia, birth control for high schoolers, gay marriage and high taxes can be found within the natural law, or spark of God, of man’s heart.

Not really. Let me remind you what you wrote:
Simply looking at where anti-theists place themselves on the political spectrum is enough to define Progressivism as a philosophy that puts “progress” before God, whether on purpose or not.
You are trying to show that Progressivism puts progress before God by citing a group that does put progress before God, namely the anti-theists, and using them to define Progressivism. That is like trying to show that “love of one’s mother is evil” because anti-theists love their mothers. Your argument to define Progressivism in terms of what anti-theists believe is a logical fallacy because there are Progressives that are not anti-theists.
You’d have to be living in a cave not to realize that the Progressive wing is home to the “nones” and atheists and anti-theists.
See above.
Progressives are always high minded.
Would it be better if they were low-minded?
But, today, they have no workable solutions to any of the problems that they would like to solve, presumably because they are idealists, not realists.
Progressives have often striven for ideals that were unattainable in their lifetime. Consider the abolition movement. The early adopters of this philosophy did not see success in their lifetime. By your standards they were not realists. But without those idealists, the later efforts at abolition would have been long delayed.
As to natural law. It would be laughable to claim today that abortion, euthanasia, birth control for high schoolers, gay marriage and high taxes can be found within the natural law, or spark of God, of man’s heart.
As I said, people often do not respond to that voice within them, and so we have the evils you mentioned. But natural law is a real thing. It might be good to review the Catholic doctrine on natural law.

It’s not a coincidence that anti-theists choose to support the Progressive wing. It’s no coincidence that Bernie Sanders, who is assumed to be an atheist, is the Progressive wing’s “leader”.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to define Progressivism, today, as a philosophy that puts progress before God. Logical fallacy or not. I’m looking at which policies are supported and who is supporting them, and so is the author in the article which is the subject of the OP. An author which also makes the distinction between Progressives and those who follow a religion.

Note that the title of the thread is “True Religion And Progressivism Cannot Co-Exist.” Therefore observations about particular anti-religion policies associated with today’s Progressives (such as abortion), do not address the general question of whether Progressivism in general is ever able to co-exist with religion. Examining some other Progressive policies of the past (like Abolition and the others that I mentioned) shows that Progressivism has at some points in history co-existed with religion quite well. To prove the premise of the thread, one would have to show that there is something inherently anti-religious in all Progressive movements. It might be good at this point to review the life of Archbishop Óscar Romero if you want further examples of Progressivism co-existing with religion.

What say you to faithful Catholics like me who support what you would call “progressive” policies?
what policies do you support that are only progressive policies?

i don’t mean things that even conservatives support but have a different solution for (poor, homeless, healthcare, etc)

do you support their anti-abortion, ssm, trans gender, homosexuality, identity issues, etc.

It depends which policies/issues they are.

Also, it’s not just the issue; for example, the issue of having a clean environment, but the specific policies which lead to resolving the issue.

Most people are for policies that further the good of the common man. The question isn’t “are you for a clean environment?” Nearly everyone is for a clean environment. The question is “are you for X policy that may result in a clean environment at X cost?”

But other research will tell you, Bernie does lean atheist. Like many of us, born with that religion.

I guess I am using the terms progressive and liberal interchangeably, which may not be appropriate
That sure isn’t for me to say. The use of these terms to mean government overreach baffles me. On some issues, liberals want more government, and on others, conservatives want more government. That is why we still have a huge budget spending with Republicans, as well as Democrats. I think the only ones with a non-contradictory view of government are the Libertarians and the Communists.

That is why I think terms are used tenuously, and definitely cannot be used as this author does.

The article is about progressive-ism today.

I’m not arguing that progressive policies always have been and always will be putting progress ahead of God. I’m arguing that progressivism, today, puts progress, whatever that may be, ahead of any concerns about what the past 3 thousand years has taught about the morality that’s has been gleaned from God.

I am going to take the word of his office over speculation.
