Well done everyone! This is the first reasonable discussion of this topic on CAF. Keep it up.

I’m tempted now to say that you’ve jinxed it and that the trolls are en route… 😃

Could it be because it’s in Catholic Living but not World News? Different crowd.

You can’t build the Wall in the River. That means it gets build on our side of the river. Trump’s Wall would take away land owned by Texans for hundreds of years. Eminent domain. We take land ownership very seriously in Texas.
Exactly, I’m so glad to see someone articulate this. All you have to do is look up the woes encountered in trying to implement the boarder fence authorized in 2006. All of this sounds great in speeches, but getting down to realities this is a white elephant. Ironically, much of this is happening in “Trump” county.

Aside from the wall…what are we doing about drug kingpins here in the US… they are the distributors this side of the border who are being supplied…and obviously we have a HUGE drug problem here otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for drugs like there is…this is a good article to read about a border wall

So, there are children, in many cases unaccompanied minors, who are seeking asylum at the border… that’s not a crisis? What is, then?
One might say that there is a humanitarian crisis. But that is not a military crisis.
It calls for things funded by Congress, not for the things that Trump feels as missing.

Yeah, it’s another huge, complex international issue. As YourNameHere said, opioid addiction often has its roots in prescription painkiller use and abuse. Heroin gets the job done after the prescription runs out. Much of it comes from poppy grown in Afghanistan. Now, large amounts of fentanyl are coming from Chinese suppliers across both borders. A more secure border is necessary but certainly won’t fix the crisis.

The wall is a simplistic answer to solving complicated issues.
The problem is that even if it were feasible and if enough money were raised for construction, it would not solve the problems.

His opinion should carry extra weight since that’s his constituency.

Working with the Mexican government instead of insulting the Mexican government like President Trump does would be the way to go.
Mexico is in the process of using funds to aid their southern neighbors to try to stabilize those countries to make them safer so that people will quit migrating to escape violence.
