Trump calls out Biden on religion

I’m not sure how anyone can “hurt the Bible”, aside from mistranslating it, or removing books from it, but I am very happy to see Trump call out Biden on matters of religion. He didn’t mention abortion, but give him time, he will. I would love to see Trump challenge him on this in a debate.

If you will stop and think about it, non-Catholics challenging Catholics to accept and adhere to all of the Church’s teachings, could be a very potent way to make dissident Catholics uncomfortable, and possibly bring some of them to orthodoxy (small letter O). Trump does not claim to accept any one denomination’s teachings, nor to have a terribly profound understanding of Christian doctrine or Scripture. So he really can’t be accused of being a hypocrite. Asymmetrical combat and creation of cognitive dissonance. Pretty powerful stuff.

Perhaps, but as I alluded to above, Trump doesn’t really claim to be any great moral authority, and would not deny that he has been less than sterling in his own personal life — he really can’t. To point out that Biden’s professed religion condemns the murder of unborn babies — there would be no shortage of comments from recent Popes that Trump could draw upon — could well bring out that Trump is not the only “emperor with no clothes”. Edwin Edwards was able to use this strategy against David Duke in Louisiana — in so many words, “I’m not all that good, we all know that, but I’m not as bad as he is”. He won handily. Kind of like the old joke about the two men fleeing an attacking bear — “I don’t have to run faster than the bear, I just have to run faster than you”.

‘Powerful stuff’ is usually coherent. The linked statements are not.
I thought this was a pretty straightforward comment. You take two things — asymmetrical combat and inducing cognitive dissonance — and use them as weapons to throw your adversary off track and get him rattled. And Trump can fight dirty when he has to.

Although Pres Trump favors legislation more favorable to people of faith than Biden in my opinion (abortion, etc), I think his motives are more politically motivated to “shore up the base” than sincerely held beliefs, if you take into consideration how he deals with people as a whole.

For example, he routinely and distastefully insults people personally who disagree with him or who dare to see things differently. He fires staffers left and right like he’s still on ‘The Apprentice’, etc.

Just my personal observation. I still prefer him to Biden, though.

By Catholic standards both are flawed and neither should be in office.

Oh, I’m well aware of all that. I don’t particularly like Trump and I never have. The street language I would use to describe him, would definitely run afoul of CAF guidelines. But he is willing to go to bat for the unborn. I’m really not concerned with his reasons. It’s just too important. I know I am sounding like a broken record, but one, two, or even three Supreme Court justices could have influence decades into the future, possibly another generation. So it matters who picks them.

If there is a boat full of people on fire at sea, and it is about to go down and drown everyone, I’m not terribly concerned with whether the owner of the rescue ship that’s on its way to save them is a nice guy, whether he treats his crew well, nor whether he acquired the ship honestly, or stole it. That’s the analogy here.

After seeing countless threads like these, I just move on at this point

President Trump is also pro abortion. He supports abortion if the father is a criminal (rape incest) or if the health of the mother is a concern, or if the child has genetic medical conditions.

We have one candidate on my state ballot who is pro life in accordance with the Church, Brian Carroll.

Where does the Church teach that American politicians must be without flaws?

Just an FYI - a whole block of bolded text makes me (and I assume everyone else) less likely to read what you posted. It’s like posting in all caps, I just ignore it as opposed to actually reading it. Please don’t do all bolded posts.

Yes, and Trump does not profess to be a devout member of a Christian denomination that preaches against serial polygamy and adultery.
Hmmm, then why did he stand in front of that church with a bible if he doesn’t believe it?
I will concede that this was a pretty cringe-worthy stunt. Tear-gassing peaceful (at least it’s my expectation that they were peaceful) protestors to clear the square for his performance didn’t help matters.

Let’s be real, Trump really doesn’t understand the Bible, and does not seem to make a lot of connections in his religious thought, that he should make. His statement that he has never repented of anything in his life, is pretty troubling. But there are legions of people who go through life maintaining that “they’ve never done anything really wrong”. It’s a numbed, self-serving moral compass. But again, Trump doesn’t really claim to be anything he’s not. It would be very easy for him to say “no, I’m not much where religion is concerned, I’ve never professed to be any saint, but you, Joe Biden, you profess to be a faithful Catholic, yet you are willing to allow the unborn to be killed throughout all nine months of pregnancy — your Church isn’t okay with that, why are you?”.

There was never a finer moment in American political history, than when Trump shamed the Democrats into stone silence during the State of the Union address, by bringing up late-term abortion. Couldn’t one of them have stood up and challenged him, the way South Carolina’s Joe Wilson did when he shouted “you lie!” at Obama? Or did the cat have possession of their tongues?

This is inaccurate. It is repeated endlessly by misguided few who don’t like Trump for other reasons, so they convince themselves he’s pro-abortion - but he’s not. He’s the only president to attend the march for life; he seeks to appoint federal judges who are pro-life.

You can always do “something more” for the pro-life cause. You advocate for life? You’re not really pro-life because you didn’t open your house to an unwed mom! You open a home for unwed moms? It was too small! As I have posted many times, to some misguided few people, you’re never pro-life until you burn down an abortion clinic.

Further, when you call Trump pro-abortion you really announce that there is no fundamental difference between his position and Joe Biden’s - and it’s Biden who gets NARAL’s endorsement, not Trump.

but you, Joe Biden, you profess to be a faithful Catholic, yet you are willing to allow the unborn to be killed throughout all nine months of pregnancy
But well - the God allows people to do the same things and even more evil. God gave the people the free will, responsibility, beatitudes and commandments and advices and the Church sacraments and the example of saints. God gave all that to the people, but God gave also free will and God allows to kill unborn. It is the choice of man. And I am sure, that noone is willing to take this choice, noone is happy about the worst outcome, but still - God gave people this choice.

So - you are advocating that people should take this choice away?

God allows people to kill unborn, because God gave people the choice.

And I am sure that under the Democrats people have and will have better social security, better education opportunities, better healthcare and so many other things better that they will be say YES to baby in case of this choice. At least - the economic/social/health/education and many other issues will not be obstacle to the baby under the democrat policies.

Of course, there will be people who will take bad choices under the democrat baby-friendly policies as well. But then their sin will be even greater.
