I’m always wary of the whole reduced sodium stuff. I’m not convinced that sodium is the bad guy it has been made to appear as (for otherwise healthy people)

And I’d they are throwing away the food and it ends up being used as compose, that rather defeats the purpose…or they flat out refuse to buy school lunches.
And when the schools are ok with the growing obesity epidemic, and police academies can’t find fit recruits – and our Armed Forces can’t find suitable soldiers because they’re all out of shape – that compromises national security. Courtesy of a president who has no concept whatsoever of exercise and physical fitness – at least Clinton gave up Big Macs, and Obama gave up smoking…what a SHAMEFUL example Trump is setting for our nation’s kids. Absolutely shameful.

I’m pretty sure there’s no obesity epidemic among the Radical Islamic terrorists who want to kill us. Nope, we’re #1 on that list. 😦

So, when are you going to start FORCING kids to give up their computers and start running around the block?

I don’t know about you, but i don’t look toward the government to set the example for healthy eating and exercise routines. That responsibility falls squarely on me as the parent. I limit the amount of time in front of tv or tablets, I make my kids go outside and play (actually they do this most of the time themselves) and i choose what food to put in front of them at meal times. None of what i do in this regard has been influenced by unnecessary nanny state regulations. Kids aren’t obese because the president eats a big mac and has cake after meals. They are obese because their parents let them get that way.

For many kids, the only decent meal they get is at school. Sure, given the choice between something healthy and something with tons of sodium, fat and sugar, they are accustomed to the second choice. Why not have cigarettes there for them also? It would be good for the tobacco industry and help create more jobs in it.

I remember how the workers in a local school surreptitiously slipped additional food to hungry kids. The Obama diet wasn’t just a matter of vegetables. It was also a pretty light diet for hungry, growing and active kids. In that particular school a lot of the kids were farm kids, and I imagine they had a pretty significant daily calorie requirement.

Michelle was promoting exercise as well (the “Let’s Move” program). It’s not forcing children to exercise but considering she was accused of starting a nanny state with her initiatives, forcing children to exercise would have increased those accusations.

I agree completely! I spent my whole childhood finding a way to be outside, even if I had to take my homework to the barn. I chased my kids outside. I grew up in the country and I live in the country now where the last child grew up. The older kids lived in the country to start then in a small town until high school but they had a playground and a large park within walking distance.

I can’t imagine trying to raise kids in a place where it is not safe to send them outside to play. It was a choice I made to raise my kids there as opposed to a place where I had more opportunity to make money.

I grew up on school lunches and never had a weight problem. They were nutritious and warm lunches and were full meals. I looked forward to lunch everyday.

I think fast food and snack food (chips, soda, etc.) have more to do with our obesity
problem than school lunches! It is what they are eating after school Michelle should be
concentrating on.

The kids I take care of universally complained of the portions being too small and the food not tasting good. And these kids usually would come home and have a huge snack. When I was a kid the school cafeteria served only whole milk and we were thinner than the current crop of children. I am not sure that the government’s guidelines were good ones.

Besides this might be some children’s only meal. A calorie reduced lunch wouldn’t make sense in that case. Also we could reintroduce daily physical education and make the kids walk or bike to school. I have parents drive their children a half mile to school when it was safe to walk.

And don’t forget the ketchup. Because that’s considered a vegetable or something like that.

Yeah, heaven forbid we encourage children to exercise. I don’t recall ever seeing an overweight Radical Islamist terrorist. They’re all THIN. How will we equip our Armed Forces with the strongest and most fit if all the kids growing up today are all couch potatoes?

Those lunches were vastly different than today’s school lunches. Remember how ketchup got labeled a vegetable? Pizza, chicken nuggets, and burritos are far more common on today’s lunch menus, along with disgusting sugary abominations like strawberry milk. Believe it or not, Michelle’s initiatives were an attempt to love school lunches back to the sort you experienced.

Speaking of exercise, why is it that there are no more sidewalks?

I remember as a kid walking around on sidewalks and not have to worry about cars.

Now towns are built for cars, no more sidewalks for pedestrians, and people have no choice but to drive. And if you dare suggest making a town more pedestrian friendly, people look at you like you are unAmerican.

Nailed it. This is just one of MANY areas where the Feds are sticking their noses into areas that are none of their business. Don’t get me started.

When it’s used to the extent that I use it at some meals, to could be considered a veggie serving. (Well, it’s actually a fruit, but you know what I mean 😃 )

I hear that the kids routinely throw out the apples given. What a waste.

I agree!Additinally, what incentive is there for these kids to adopt a healthy diet ,when they see Obama and Michelke chomping down a juicy cheeseburger and fries?:

The lunch changes do not bother me. They did not appear to be working at improving the health or grade performance of students. At least they were not making much of an impact. As many mention the meals are unpopular, with meals frequently tossed away.

Hopefully a new and better program can be created.

For what ever reason there are many over weight younger Americans anymore. Many theories have come out on why that is but it is hard to say with certainty what will help the situation.

Personally at the moment I’m leaning toward the theory of kids spending less time outside, in the sunshine as playing a larger roll in why so many children are over weight. Wearing sunglass might be a contributing factor also. Don’t know if that is the case but that is my guess.

A little on the lack of sunlight theory can be read here ~

“How early morning light can help you lose weight
Scientists have found that getting up early and enjoying the early morning light helps lower body fat because the ‘blue light’ of the morning kick starts the body’s metabolism”
