What exactly did Donald Trump say about Mexicans? I tried searching the 'net but came up with stories about what happened after he said whatever it was that he said. I’m not trying to start a debate or stir things up. If someone can just point me in the right direction, the thread can close after that. :tiphat:

A great rundown from Slate.

Trump was talking about ILLEGAL immigrants coming across the border. That’s what all the critics are leaving out!

Thread needs a news article link (Slate’s article is opinion)

Found a link, haven’t read the article nor have seen the video, but the headline looks like it might fit and it’s a News site. 🙂

That should work since it has the quote:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best,” he said during the announcement. “They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting."

Are Americans two-faced or just don’t want to hear the truth. Sorry, every time I read something it’s that if you say a so called wrong word we will make you pay for it. This country is too far left!

And they can say all the “wrong words” they want. God Bless, Memaw

If you notice in the original statement he made no distinction between legal and illegal. I’ll admit that maybe the quote is out of context and the previous sentence may spell out who he is talking about. That said, this statement is chilling to me:

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best, they’re not sending you…"

Look closely what he’s saying. First, he’s talking about people that immigrate from Mexico without any qualifiers (i.e. illegal/legal), these people are not the best (again, not illegals but simply Mexicans), and they are not you. It demonizes “the other” in order to score political points. I can’t imagine reading that any other way than racist, at the very least it’s nationalistic but that’s still not a good thing.

Trump is a buffoon and shouldn’t be taken seriously (unless he’s suing you or owes you money I guess). What’s scary to me is how many people agree with him.

J Peterson is correct; Trump did not specify illegal immigrants. He categorized all the Mexican people this way.

And even if he had singled out illegal immigrants, most of them are not drug runners, they’re not criminals, they are not rapists. They are *poor, *which, I am sure, in his eyes is the same thing.

I get a little sick to my stomach when I hear the racists defend Trump’s outrageous comments. The fact that there are people who agree with him and will probably vote makes me doubt the wisdom of universal suffrage.

Let’s just say, he is not very diplomatic. 😃
Who knows that’s maybe what some voters want. I will not judge.🙂
He was yet in another dust-up on twitter over the weekend - he was trashing China and Chinese workers all the while conveniently forgetting that his Macy’s line is all Made in China.😊
Oh yeah…and some are Made in Mexico.

He mentions more than Mexico in the original quote:
DONALD TRUMP: When do we beat Mexico at the border? They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us economically. They are not our friend, believe me. But they’re killing us economically.
The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems.
Thank you. It’s true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.
But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting. And it only makes common sense. It only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people.
It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably— probably— from the Middle East. But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast.

Thank you.

I have no further comments.

Some are saying he is a buffoon.
I think he knows what he is doing. We are at least talking about him and he has distinguished himself from the large pool of people running. He knows who he is talking to…and I bet you it works with his dempgraphic.

My comments in red:
DONALD TRUMP: When do we beat Mexico at the border? They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us economically. They are not our friend, believe me. But they’re killing us economically. Here obviously, he is talking about the Border, he is talking about the subject of Illegal Immigration, hence, it is unfair to say he is talking about all Mexicans.
The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems.

They’re rapists. ***And some, I assume, are good people.***Undeniably true, sure it’s not all illegal immigrants, how many Americans need to die? Do those attacking Trump’s words deny that Americans die fairly regularly from illegal immigrants?? We’ve had 2 stories in the past week, in Texas, a man deported 4 times, killed his wife with a hammer and then, of course, the story out of San Francisco. Also, note, Trump said "some, I assume, are good people.
But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting. And it only makes common sense. It only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people. Would Trump be talking about all from Mexico if he is talking to Border Guards? Sounds like someone is misconstruing his comments.
***It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably— probably— from the Middle East. ***But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast. There, totally refuting that Trump was talking just about Mexico.

So, care to name who these racists are who defend his comments? His comments need no defending.

My comments in red:
He never explicitly states illegal immigration but I agree it’s implied in the final sentence of the wider quote. I don’t believe he was simply talking about illegal immigration though. A man speaks what’s in his heart (we don’t have any other access then people’s words and actions) and his words don’t really make a clear distinction between Mexican’s and illegal immigrants. He is also painting Mexico as an enemy which is news to me.

The “they’re not you” statement stands and can’t be defended in my opinion. He is clearly trying to place dividers between different people. I am as human as a Mexican. I am them despite Trumps small minded idea of what it means to be a human.

On a more lighthearted note, do the border guards that he talks to have competence? If so then his last statement is a lie. How can they give an honest assessment of what’s going on if we don’t know what’s going on? 😛

First, I am catching this speech, that is what it was, a Speech, a 53 minute speech even I think. Not an interview.

“They’re not you”, he obviously was talking to a full audience, this is not difficult to understand. A great number of persons who come across are engaged in illegal activities, it may be only 5% or it maybe be 50% but if we get a million people crossing the border a year, those numbers add up. Guess what too, drugs get across the border, who brings them? People are human-trafficked across the border, where do they come from?

You question the guard’s competence. He may be on the border. I have seen the Mexican border a number of times. Should this be a qualification of judging the border??
How can they give an honest assessment of what’s going on if we don’t know what’s going on?
That’s easy, because we have lax border security.

Again, you totally ignore what has been printed 2 times already:
They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.*** And some, I assume, are good people.***
He says right there he assumes some are good people. I don’t see what more we want.

It’s not what Trump said, but how he said it. He could have simply said that too many low skilled workers who we do not need are coming here along with many criminals and then pull out the 30% statistic of the illegal alien community who now inhabit our prisons.

And there have been hundreds of native born Americans who have been killed by illegals, with this truth being kept under wraps by the politicians who do not want to address the issue the way the majority of citizens want it addressed.

We need to completely end illegal immigration and sharpely curtail legal immigration until every native born American currently on the dole has a job.

I guess you consider me a racist since I am defending what Trump said. You’re wrong…I heard his whole speech & he was saying how he would build a secure wall along the border & get Mexico to pay for it. The wall is to keep out illegal immigrants, they are the ones he was referring to who are drug runners & rapists…but where he messed up was when he said he assumed a few were good people.

It appeared to me most of what he said was not scripted but off the cuff. He is foolish for not thinking of what he is going to say before he blurts out something that can be misconstrued.
Mexicans interviewed, who came here legally, agree with Trump & are angry that the illegals are going to be given the same benefits that they had to struggle for.

P.S. I’m not a racist, since I’m a musician & played music with Cubans, Puerto Ricans, blacks etc.and made many friends with everyone with no problem. 😛

I didn’t question the guard’s competence, Trump did that. I’m simply pointing it out.

The drugs come across the border to meet a demand. We need to fix our drug problem and it’s not going to get fixed by adding more guards to the border. We are treating a medical problem as a criminal one and it’s simply not working (unless you’re involved in the prison industry of course).

Why are humans being trafficked across the border? Without any statistics my guesses would be cheap labor, prostitution, and drug dealing. The thing they all have in common is that they are all in demand in the United States. Perhaps we need to clean up our own yard before throwing stones.
