This is actually hilarious. Hope everyone has a happy Juneteenth if you celebrate it. God bless

It makes me remember that I’ve never read Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

My city is 49.08% White and 43.65% Black. I can honestly say that before yesterday I had never heard of the holiday.

Only heard of it a few years ago because of the Ralph Ellison novel.

I probably became aware of it when I lived in Texas. It is a Texas State holiday.
I originally found out about it through someone from Texas. celebrations amoung groups of people here in GA for it. Since it isn’t a work holiday though those celebrations are sometimes not done on the actual day, but on the previous or following weekend.

Seriously, doesn’t he have someone to advise him on these things? Or is he doing it deliberately?

It’s interesting to see how many (presumed) Americans haven’t heard of the most significant African American holiday there is. I think that kind of proves that Ralph Ellison’s point is still very valid.

Well considering it’s not promoted that much it’s understandable. Looks like more will know now.

I agree on both points. I think it should be a federal holiday. It’s hard to beat the abolition of slavery when it comes to something great to celebrate!

Not that I’ve actually read it or ‘Invisible Man’; perhaps I should consider doing so.

I ordered it recently. I’ve meant to read it for years but never got around to it.

I can’t remember not knowing about it! To be fair, I went to a very racially mixed summer school between jr. and sr. High and since it was a summer holiday, I probably learned about it then. The school decorated for it and we had a history day explaining it.

I was amazed so many didn’t know of the holiday and the reasons behind it but anyone with limited exposure to the black community, it makes sense. I’m glad I had that exposure. It’s also how I learned to tame my curly hair! 😂😂😂
