because he had some “catholic worker” history, as if he was some “male version of Dorothy Day” or as if some claimed interest on his part in the “Catholic worker movement” excuses his hostility to police; social agitation; and offensiveness.
Peter Maurin was the precursor of Dorothy Day. If anyone was the male version of her, it was him.

Good heavens. We follow Christ, who was not always peaceful or pleasant (remember He took whips to the money changers in the Temple? Remember the very barbed insults He levelled at the authorities?)

Why do I get the feeling some of you would.stand at the foot of the Cross and thibk “Radical! Agitator! Anti-government! Those poor soldiers are only following orders! Only following their training! Only clearing the streets of Jerusalem of violent rebels like His friends! He deserves everything He is getting!”

You are not suggesting Gugino was acting in persona of Christ. Are you???

You can’t win, which his why you are grasping at any straw to smear the poor.schmo.who got his skull cracked after the fact.
I haven’t really seen a convincing answer to the arguments put forward by Randolph and VonDerTann

This 75 year old man has a brain injury as a result of being shoved by police and is still in hospital, his lawyer now says.

No, I am refuting those who are suggesting that insults to, or provocation against, authority is somehow.automatically un-Christian or un-Catholic.

Well there are those Bible verses about obeying authority, and the encyclicals saying the same thing…

Lawful and reasonable authority. “Clear the area or you will be arrested - and worse IF you resist” is a whole different kettle of fish to 'clear the area or we will proceed straight to the “and worse” and not worry about the arresting or resisting bit"

I participated in peaceful protests and have been active in advancing civil rights and religious rights in my community. You need to understand violence is not the right approach in changing hearts and behaviors. Violence only begets more violence. This seems to be the approach advocated my the media now—so tragic and sad.

I will move on, and wish you well.

Some of the biggest scoundrels I’ve known had friends to spare.
I think you need more evidence before you completely sully this man’s reputation.
He has a long history of being anti-police and anti-government.
To state the obvious, people have a right to their beliefs.
He is not exactly a peaceful protestor as he has been portrayed by his supporters.
What specific acts of violence has he committed?
. He approached, provoked and physically forced himself into the police.
He pulled out a phone and waved it around.

If it was truly a violent act, why did the police go tell that big tripped-and-fell whopper? Obviously they knew that they were in the wrong.

We don’t need to sully his reputation. He did that all by himself.

I think his “F**** the police” tweet; his history of arrests; his running up to the police and appearing to provoke them; his reputation in the community as a troublemaker; and his telling other protesters he was there for “fun,” speak amply as to who he was.

Agreed. There’s too many troubling aspects of this story to be just a simple bad cop good protestor thing

Irrelevant. He can believe whatever he wants and it still won’t justify beating him to the ground and then lying about how it happened.

Revisionist history. No one “beat him to the ground.” The police tried to push him away and he fell - and thus the police report was accurate.

By the video I’m not even convinced his fall was genuine - he just happened to smack his head after he flopped.

I don’t need a political fact checker to tell me what I observe with my own eyes: His “fall” looks like a flop. I have no doubt his injuries happened; I just doubt his fall was caused by the police.

One final point: This agitator Mr. Gugino has a terrible history of trying to make himself important, but without really exposing himself to any great risk. His actions were things like protesting the use of armed drones at a military facility (!); sitting in the gallery when his friends were in court and trying to offer them strategy tips, and basically coming off as an old hippie trying to make like this is the 1960s and he’s still a kid. That’s also 100% consistent with rushing out to have “fun” when a protest popped up. To me, he has zero credibility about anything.
