On the contrary, it shows that racism is alive and well–against whites and asians. But for some reason, we don’t get countrywide protests, nor is there hiring quotas attempting to boost our numbers in schools and jobs.
So find even a single study which says such quotas would be necessary.

I’m sure you’re aware that black people are still significantly under-represented in medical schools, in large part due to the cost.

And the beef that conservatives have against affirmative action is based on the fact that people should be hired on merit rather than race.

And you’re living in a media bubble if you think that affirmative action hasn’t been criticized by liberals or academics. Here is just a sampling of this critique:

My question is: if all these people have joined this class/lab/conference because they were the most qualified for the positions, why do we care about their races?
You haven’t addressed at all the evidence I presented with respect to the immense wealth disparities between black and white households. The problem is that black people do not have as many opportunities (e.g. for high quality early education) because of real actual discrimination, and the lack of opportunity propagates poverty which further limits opportunities. Therefore, your argument is no different from saying “if I fill up my neighborhood with only the homeowners best able to pay their mortgage, why should I care that it is all-white?” People literally did make this argument and it is one of the contributing factors to the lack of inter-generational wealth among black people. And so the problem with the argument is obvious: your system cannot actually be egalitarian if it is in fact helping perpetuate racial inequalities.

And the beef that conservatives have against affirmative action is based on the fact that people should be hired on merit rather than race.
So then what have conservatives done to prevent businesses hiring less qualified white people over more qualified black people?

That’s a silly question since the whole point of decrying affirmative action is based on hiring based on merit rather than race.

The evidence I’ve given clearly shows businesses are not hiring solely based on merits, but instead discriminating against black people. So my question is perfectly relevant: if conservatives believe hiring should be done based on merit, and businesses are obviously not doing that, what have conservatives done to make businesses stop hiring less qualified white people over more qualified black people?

Are you referring to that Harvard review study because I’m not sure that qualifies as “clearly”?

But disregarding that why is the assumption that conservatives are not doing anything?

Their solution would no doubt be to hire those who are BEST qualified and when that is not the case to apply the laws we do have against discrimination where necessary.

You seem to have a lot of assumptions concerning conservatives that veers on the insulting and caricaturization.

Clearly, affirmative action is not the PANACEA that democrats believe it to be if so much racial discrimination vis a vis hiring hasn’t reduced in the last 25 years.

And this link, which I already posted above:

“White workers are not only more likely to have a good job than their black and Latino peers, but also hold a disproportionate share of good jobs relative to their share of overall employment, while African-Americans and Latinos are under-represented in good jobs,” the joint report concluded. Black and Latino workers are also paid less, despite the same educational attainment.

I asked you what they have done, I have not assumed anything. Here is your opportunity to fill in the blank:

Conservatives care about meritocracy, that is why they did ___________ to make sure companies didn’t keep hiring less qualified whites over more qualified blacks.

Conservatives care about meritocracy that is why they would HIRE/HAVE HIRED THE MORE QUALIFIED BLACK candidate.

Because in a world PRACTICING meritocracy a more QUALIFIED black candidate would not lose out to a less qualified white person.

If racial discrimination were to happen regardless of merit then use the law in order to seek action against the perpetrators of discrimination.

I have to wonder why you’re avoiding the OBVIOUS, that affirmative action has done little to reduce hiring discrimination in the last 25 years if we are to believe that HARVARD STUDY??

Again, is affirmative action WORKING and does it in effect have negative consequences???

That so?
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
But you must know what it sounds like, to assert such a strong belief in meritocracy against proposals to help black people, but to have no examples of legislative initiatives to address obviously non-meritocratic hiring practices that disadvantage black people.

I’m perfectly comfortable acknowledging that racial requirements in government contracts have failed to move the needle on racial discrepancies in hiring. But your Brookings article did assert:
We know only this: some gains are probably attributable to race-conscious educational and employment policies. The number of black college and university professors more than doubled between 1970 and 1990; the number of physicians tripled; the number of engineers almost quadrupled; and the number of attorneys increased more than sixfold… On the other hand, these professionals make up a small fraction of the total black middle class.

Certain caricaturizations of political groups are being employed that I know will not further discussions.

So as I said earlier this is an attempt at futility.

Even if they make a small fraction of the total black middle class the assumption should not be that that is as a result of HIRING DISCRIMINATION rather than the choice of studies undertaken by individual blacks!!

Note: It is well known that most blacks still vote democrat therefore the likelihood of a black democratic representative is more likely to be found than a black republican. Fortunately, that is changing and we are seeing more blacks leaving the democratic party and joining the republican party. And there are reasons such movements like Blexit exist.

Conservatives: Affirmative action has made people discriminate against whites.

Also conservatives: Affirmative action has failed to change anyone’s behavior.
I didn’t say either. Often, affirmative action discriminated against Americans of Asian heritage, and sometimes against Jews On college campuses.

The proper argument is that, in America over the last 50+ years, the behavior of Americans has changed dramatically! Except maybe of those who are intent to stoke racial conflict- all of whom practice identity politics. We saw them on both sides at Charlottesville.
