The plan is being constructing on ‘donor calls’ and through meetings with consultants etc. **Do you think the SuperPACs were given all that money and they don’t need a strategy? ** Recordings of these calls are leaked, recently there was planning around creating a brokered convention.

The establishment exists, but it’s not the parody you portray - evil, dark, etc. It’s just deeply self interested. Do you not believe there is a Military Industrial Complex mentioned by Ike?
It is not I who portrays people as such–it is the people who speak of the establishment as if it is some untouchable, all-knowing, powerful group that needs to be torn apart like something from a movie. The truth is, there are many people (some with deep pockets) who have an interest, so what? They don’t have a right to try to get the person they wanted elected? In the end, they can’t force anyone to vote against their will.

Here I am butting in again from the other side of the world.

I don’t know much about Mitt Romney or if there is anything dodgy about his motives for making that speech, but why not just really listen and think take on board what he said?

I listened as someone who has no “baggage” in this political game. I thought it was a measured and considered and balanced speech - and gentlemanly, as you say, Simple Soul. (What a relief to the ears after Trump’s nasty tirades)

Romney, I believe, genuinely loves your country and is trying to point out the dangers of electing Trump as president. It is exactly what outside “foreign” observers are saying and have been saying since Trump came on the scene.

I couldn’t help but wish Romney was one of the candidates - even if it is none of my business.

Please, America, listen to this speech and take heed!!.
America has a habit of voting against what is good for it (if that is what you think of Trump).

See Obama, Barack H.

Besides, Romney spent far longer telling folks NOT to vote for Barack Obama, and used money to try and bring him down, and folks still didn’t listen. What makes you think they’ll listen to Romney now? I am not even debating the merits or lack thereof of his remarks, simply that they ignored in 2012 and chose a horrific man as the alternative. Mittens doesn’t have the best track record on these things (and I think he’s a good man, mind you).

How and why did the GOP get so divided and so raucous? Kasich is now the only one with a bit dignity and he is just hanging in there. If Trump is elected get ready for world War III: them against us.

I don’t think Mitt Romney could win as a write-in candidate; at most he’d split the Republican vote.

Who said any of this but you? Point out the post? The fact is people don’t want to be told what to eat, when to eat, who to vote for and how to think. And its quite apparent with Trump and Cruz on Tuesday. Then you would then like to suggest they are this and that and angry amd so forth, as if you know them all. Fact is they voted for who they chose to be it we like it or not. Its called being an American and your rights. The GOP-RNC are hypocrites plain and simple. And no what you have is coercion, conspiracy and brainwashing and apparently some brainwashed who will march to that tune. Perhaps thats what you don’t like about those you THINK are angry.
There is zero doubt that Trump supporters are angry (not all, but many)–they have said it over and over. In truth, I understand that anger because the Republicans in Congress have let us down. No one is forcing anyone to vote a certain way–they are making a strong case. You think Trump with all his nasty comments and bullying is not trying to sway voters? Of course he is and he has swayed many–what is he now not supposed to do things his won way? If he can, then why can’t others?

I was not talking about the party. I was talking about Trump. He seems to personify every evil that liberals say conservatives are full of.
Makes me wonder who’s side he is really on.
That is precisely why so many are worried about Trump. They feel he is a liberal in conservative clothes.

This all feels remarkably similar to 2008 to me.

the GOP are delusional–like they were with romney–if they think count chocula or rubio could defeat hillary. trump is probably the best chance they got taking back the Whitehouse.
In all seriousness, I believe the Republican establishment would rather Hillary become President vs Trump.

The Brookings Institution article I read and the fact that at least one Republican in Congress has already publicly stated that he will vote for Hillary over Trump is very telling.

The article states that it is foreign policy that the Republicans fear with Trump. Foreign Policy experts in the Republican Party believe that Trump will destroy America’s position with his policies. They believe that Hillary, as bad as she is, will do less internation damage, while they feel that Trump will hurt us internationally very badly and that he will destabilize the entire Asian Pacific.

The party is willing to risk the damage Hillary will do domestically over the damage they feel Trump will do internationally.

trump fights his opponents. Romney is attacking someone who has helped him before. Real decent people don’t demean those who have helped you, not in the way Romney did.

Romney knows nothing about Trump’s tax. When Harry Raid accused of Romney of not paying taxes for 10 years, Trump defended him.

Romney said Trump didn’t build his business but inherited it, just wow!!! Decent people don’t make that kind of attack on a person who has helped you before.
I’m sure Romney appreciated Trump’s help, but that does not mean his appreciation extends to him supporting Trump to be President. You can consider a person a friend, and still think there are major reasons they should not be in the Oval Office.

I am quite certain that if Trump had thought Romney would have made a terrible President, he would never have endorsed or helped him during his run.

We all know a lot of people–if we are honest, we’ll admit that the vast majority would make terrible Presidents, yet we still love/like them all.

You really can’t know much about the Democrat party supporters if you think it’s just a herd. I’ve spent lots and lots of time with Democrats and grew up in a Democrat dominated area. Just like the Republican party there are members that support some of the platform and not other parts. There are people that will vote straight party, and others that lean towards 3rd party options. And just like Republicans, their are those people that try and blackmail others with guilt into doing what they want them to do.
My entire family (a large one) are rabid Democrats and they hate the fact that I am not. I am surrounded by Democrats–I know how they think quite well, but that does not mean it applies to every single person. Nothing in this stuff is absolute.

If the GOP isn’t careful, they’re going to turn Trump into a political “martyr.” It’s hard for me to imagine any other scenario except that Romney’s speech will help Trump.

At the debate tonight, the first thing Trump ought to do is look right at the camera and say, “There is a movement going on here, people. Today you saw the living embodiment of the establishment status-quo speak out against me. I can’t think of any higher compliment than that. All the political forces of all the special interests and lobbyists and people who want you to stay asleep and powerless have been deployed against me. If you want change, there’s only one obvious choice. The other people on this stage have no clue what is going on, nor do those who control them and give them their talking points. It’s do or die time, let’s show them that it’s the people who run this country, not the elites in Washington.”

Or something like that. I’m sure he could make it more colorful. You can debate the full truth of it, but Romney has pitched a slow ball right down the middle of the plate and Trump out to smash it out of the park.

Really though, the GOP ought to be embracing him and surrounding him with whatever advisors they can to smooth off the rough edges and so forth. Spend all that money making him a better candidate instead of burning it on attack ads. Sort of like that scene in the Wizard of Oz when they reach the Emerald City and get a makeover–ribbons in the lion’s hair and all that. Other than civil war within the party, I don’t know what other choice there is. Saying that lots of people won’t turn out to vote for him is somewhat negated by the fact that lots of new people, including independents and Democrats, are voting for him and very well might choose him over Clinton. Just a thought.

Ben Sasse has said he wouldn’t vote for Donald Trump. Ben Sasse is a conservative. He has a 95% Heritage Action rating: heritageactionscorecard.com/members

There are other conservatives who oppose Donald Trump for the Republican nomination. Are they all part of “the establishment” ?

So Trump started his campaign swinging with counter punches…
Exactly. Donald Trump started this scorched earth tactic and now he’s mad that others are doing the same thing.

So, Trump can play hardball, but no one else can?

J.D. Hayworth, former Az. Representative, Republican, made a good point, why didn’t Romney go after Obama this way??

Here is an important question:

If you truly believe in your heart (and I am talking convinced) that Trump will lose to Hillary, or if he wins he will be terrible President, then don’t you have a responsibility to do what can be done to elect someone else?

Romney is a person who did what he could, and he still retains a 60% approval rating with Republicans–so time will tell. Every time Trump is hit, he grows, so you are probably right about this.

I wish–oh how I wish–that Trump supporters had one tenth the zeal for stopping abortion as they do to see Trump elected.

J.D. Hayworth, former Az. Representative, Republican, made a good point, why didn’t Romney go after Obama this way??
Very, very good point. At the time there was great fear about the idea of a rich white guy going after the first African-American President. I think if Romney had to do it all over again, it would go much differently–but you know what they say about hindsight.

The Republican Foreign Relations experts are afraid that Trump to destroy what’s left of America’s power in the world.

They would rather see Hillary be president than Trump. They fear that the damage Trump would do internationally would outweigh the damage Hillary would do domestically.

The problem the Republicans have is that Rubio and Cruz let Jeb take on Trump by himself and they sat back and watched until now. Jeb was the only mainstream Candidate that took Trump seriously until it was too late.

This will all be brought up in the debate tonight.

Sometimes, doing such things is meant to “goad your opponent” into making a mistake.

Romney gets some negative remarks, I had no problem supporting him in the general.

Okay, so let’s say this mythical establishment that somehow lurks unseen in the background, is trying to use Romney for that purpose.

Riddle me this:

What does Romney get from that? He is already deeply wealthy. He has stated he is not running for President, and he is not endorsing any of the other candidates. It seems in this deal (made by those evil people lurking in the background) nets absolutely nothing for Romney–so why would he do it? (could it be Romney actually believes what he said?)
As you know,I am not a Trump supporter.Yet,in all fairness to him,I have mention this.Donald Trump was asked at one of the first debates,if he would vow his alligience to thecRepublican Party, promise not to go third party.Which he did. So,now you have( yes I do believe there is an establishment power behind the party) Mitch McConell going around encouraging others in the party to not support Trump if he should become the nominee. Now we have Romney showing up,same day as another republican debate is scheduled. He basically went on and on about all the ways DT would be ruinous not only for the party but for the country as a whole. While he wouldn’t endorse anyone specifically,he definitely put out there that he was for anybody but Trump.I find all of this very off putting and devisive. The old ninnies up there on Capitol Hill are just getting their panties in a twist because things aren’t going their way.Trump clearly is a protest vote against the establishment and yet they are deaf to the voices of their base.

More than likely, someone has offered him the coveted Ambassador to France Job.
For what purpose? Romney is 68 and is quite wealthy. He was a Governor and he ran for the highest job in the land, twice, and lost. I don’t see him wanting a lower level job and I sure don’t see him being swayed by such an offer.

I believe there are only two possible reason for why Romney made the speech:
  1. He truly believes what he says.
  2. He wants to be the nominee in a brokered convention.
I doubt number two because he has to know he can’t win.
