Scripture advises a more nuanced discernment because the Pharisees notoriously did one thing and stunk on the inside.
You’ll note that Jesus judged them, because He knew their hearts. We are not quite so blessed to have that knowledge.

We are meant to cultivate a level of discernment so that we can distinguish between the spirits. That helps us know good from evil despite outward appearances. That will be how we really know Christ when He comes again.

I think is quite arrogant of us if we think we can judge hearts and minds. We can only judge actions and from that deduce possible states of mind.
St Ignatius Loyola is our go to in the gift of discerning the spirits or “motions of the soul” as he called it. “These interior movements consist of thoughts, imaginings, emotions, inclinations, desires, feelings, repulsions, and attractions. Spiritual discernment of spirits involves becoming sensitive to these movements, reflecting on them, and understanding where they come from and where they lead us.”

Discernment is the gift of all the holy people.

I’m glad to know you are holy enough to enjoy this gift. I do not think I am. Nor do I think most others are.

But regardless, I think St Ignatius talked about internal discernment, not external.

The wonderful thing we have is a Pope formed in the order of St Ignatius, who if we let ourselves listen and be guided by, our capacity by Gods grace, to discern the spirits will enhance our lives and evangelizing.

Nothing to indicate that it was a joke by that statement. Just that he’s hoping it peeves the news folks off.

And that is what aids us in making decisions including how and who to vote for.
Indeed. Discernment can help us identify the influences on our hearts and minds. Unfortunately it can’t tell us what is in the hearts and minds of those on our ballot.

I haven’t read beyond this but first, I agree that a doctor that is catholic or antiabortion should be allowed to excuse him/herself from performing one.

It does bring up a question though…one more appropriate to this topic.

Jehovah Witnesses do not believe in blood transfusions. Luckily, they usually aren’t doctors either but what if your doctor was a JW and you are hemorrhaging? Can he refuse to transfuse you as it’s against his sincerely held beliefs? I can testify to how many lives are saved due to transfusions! It’s a serious question that this brings up.

Should he be forbidden to treat any patient that may suddenly need a transfusion? This can happen even in a simple tonsillectomy!

I don’t want doctors to violate their sincerely held beliefs…unless it’s me bleeding out on the table! I have a bit of a problem with catholic hospitals having policies that some may not be aware of and sometimes, it’s the only hospital in town…so just saying, “go to another facility” isn’t always an option.

I don’t have answers, just questions.

Do you believe someone that will not perform such a basic procedure could get a medical license?
Good question! I really don’t know the answer. They could certainly hide it or perhaps go into a field that think will never include one, like podiatry or a GP that never performs operations yet be called in for a mass casualty event?

It’s just a what if question and I have no idea if it could ever really happen…just thinking out loud here.

So, I looked it up! Yes, there are a few. Some became JWs after completing their MD. There is listed a pediatrician, orthopedic surgeon and a general practice MD.

So, it’s not a hypothetical question! Now what? I’ll have to look into it further to see if transfusions cause any issues. It may be that giving the transfusion is allowed, just not receiving blood personally…that, I don’t know!
