“TRUTH”

What is it?

Is Truth {your definition} to have a Role in our lives?

PLEASE address both questions

Truth is that which conforms to reality. Different people see different realities, so they have different ideas of truth. This isn’t to say that there are different realities but that people are not always able to perceive the true reality. I believe in the Bible, the Church, and all they that teach. The more I study these teachings, the more I see how they conform to reality. Truth has a great role in our lives because it ultimately determines our sense of morality, right and wrong.

For example, atheists believe there is no God or afterlife. When we die, that’s it. That is their sense of truth, which leads to a hedonistic lifestyle. They say, “there’s nothing after this, we may as well enjoy it.” Christians, on the other hand, believe in God, heaven, and hell. There is a better place waiting for us if we live a holy life. Just a few years of sacrifice and we can gain an eternity of happiness. Hence, we strive to sacrifice for God and others. Whatever truth a person believes completely changes their outlook on life, what’s important, and their purpose in life.

Thank you my friend,

Perhaps the oldest and most frequent question we ask ourselves in some form is, WHY do we exist. Some of us are able to surmise a reply; others obviously not; or is it perhaps they do answer but don’t like it and therefore disagree and refuse it?

Blessings abound

Patrick

I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life.

As Catholics Truth better have a role in our lives lol.

The Truth is Jesus Christ. As part of His mystical Body, Truth for a Catholic defines who we are, and our relationship with God and all of creation.

That’s where you come in.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age

Truth is the quality of a true statement.
A true statement is one that, to the best of our ability, accurately describes reality.
Is Truth {your definition} to have a Role in our lives?
I’d like to accept as true as many actually true statements while accepting as little actually false statements as possible.
How to better ascertain what is actually true? I think science is mankind’s best tool and, clearly, thus far, it has come across no god.

My dear friend in Christ; may i respectfully but necessarily qualify your two statements.

I’d like to accept as true as many actually true statements while accepting as little actually false statements as possible.

as expressed this lead it seems to ME; to a subjective possibility as one has not clearly discerned what precisely and objectively is the “THEE truth” here.

No my friend; TRUTH relies on GOD, not science who can only attempt to prove or disprove the TRUTH. Which if it is TRUE cannot be disproven except by subjective evidence.

Thank you so much for sharing,
Patrick [the OP]

Truth is trusting in God’s word and not being deceived by social pressures/norms.

I think you’re calling “THEE truth” what I’m calling “reality”.

Says you.
How can I ascertain the truth value of that statement?

IF you don’t know then no amount of evidence is going to change your mind

If it is YOU that “ascertains” or “certifies” the truth value of anything, then the truth of anything becomes completely dependent upon you and upon your capacity to do the “ascertaining.”

You have made yourself the de facto “ground” of what truth essentially is, despite the fact that you don’t have complete access to the wherewithal to do the “ascertaining” in the first place.

Do you not see the problem here? That in itself ought to make you reconsider the little pickle that you have created for yourself, no?

I think as posted, truth is related to reality. But who’s perception of reality is true? I say the perception of it’s creator. Truth is God:

What you’re calling “know”, I call “believe”…
And you’re right… unlike Fox Mulder, I don’t want to believe, I want to know.

The pickle is that you don’t seem to be operating under the same concept of “truth” that I am (the one I outlined in my first reply on this thread).

And, when I ask “how can I ascertain the truth value of a statement?”, I am using me as a general person… colloquially asking “how can anyone ascertain the truth value of that statement?”

Jared2914, The first sentence is true. Every thing else is circular reasoning and not true.

PJM, The Nun’s said telling the truth was good and lying was bad. The only way of getting close to truth is to have the subject verified. So far scientific method of evaluation is the closest to truth as we have been able get.

Oh, I agree that we are both in a pickle, but the pickle you are in is more like a kerosene cucumber (to quote good ole’ Barney Fife) than the little gherkin that is mine.

Your problem is that you have no source outside of yourself, with the possible exception of an exaggerated view of science with which to back your grounding view of truth.

You said…

Whether or not science is “mankind’s best tool” with regard to ascertaining truth is debatable. It may be the best tool that we have so far by which to come to know the truth about the physical world, but you would have to make an a priori assumption to the effect that the physical world is all there is before you can jump to concluding that science is the best tool to ascertain the truth, period. Since science is purely about the physical world, it cannot be used to draw metaphysical conclusions with regard to fully explaining that world. Unless you want to hold that the physical world is self-explanatory or the one inexplicable ‘brute fact’ of existence.

My position, a la the principle of sufficient reason, is that we cannot have arrived at full certainty with regard to the truth qua truth without arriving at what fully explains itself as well as explains everything else.

Your pickle is that you accept science as the “best tool” because you assume the physical world ultimately explains itself or doesn’t need to.

That presumption has pretty much been falsified, since science isn’t the best tool for ascertaining the truth about everything, Sound reason scaffolded by principles of formal logic is a better option since it can be utilized within science using premises derived from science, but it can also critique faulty science and bolster quality science because reason offers a tool to rigorously inspect the manner in which the of methods of science are applied.

Punting to ‘brute fact’ ultimately undermines the need to explain anything whatsoever, including the enterprise of science itself.
