Trying to choose a name!!

The only problems with most of these is they are so unusual he’d be teased unmercifully on the playground. Sebastian is the least likely to bring on such abuse, but even that is pushing it. They might do well as middle names, though with a less odd name for a first name like say, Michael or Richard or Nicholas, etc.

Theresa Rose, without question.

Interesting thing about that name, Catholics immediately recognize it as a “Catholic name”, or so my daughter of that name tells me. It is particularly remarked by people who know about Ste Therese’s promise to shower the world with roses after her death and the many, many events in which peoples’ prayers have been unexpectedly accompanied by a rose when answered.

Lots are familiar with the prayer:

“Ste Therese, the Little Flower
Please pick me a rose from the heavenly garden,
and send it to me with a message of God’s love.
Ask Him to grant me the favor I thee implore,
And tell Him I will love Him each day more and more.”

Anybody familiar with that at all will know exactly what the name is about, and people do. One who is grateful for one’s daughter’s healthy birth might indeed think of her

I’ll again mention “Lily Kateri” as one of my favorites. My granddaughter of that name is named after Kateri Tekakwitha, the “Lily of the Mohawks”, recently canonized. I think fewer people might recognize the intention there, but a lot of people would. But as the first North American native canonized saint, I think it’s a particularly good name for an American of any ethnic origin.

Well, we are trying to decide on a name for our newest little one that is on the way. My 3 year old desperately wants to name the baby “Alligatorie”, which I am a firm ‘no’ on.

Personally, I don’t like giving my children an official name until I see their little face! I don’t want to risk my parents getting attached to a name, so I don’t plan on sharing with my family or friends the names that we are considering. So what better place than a lovely, relatively anonymous forum like this one?

So here are the names we have in the running.

-Louisa Corrine - (My mom’s middle name is Louise, my Mother-in-law’s name is Corrine)
-Theresa Rose - (After Saint Therese, and my due date is the feast of St. Rose of Lima)
-Cora Louise (Cora as a shortening of ‘Corrine’, and Louise after my mom’s middle name)

What are your thoughts? Which do you like best? And I am of course open to suggestions! We like to stick with old fashioned names the most.

I don’t think I’m living in another era, and I’m glad to hear these names have acceptance where you live. There are places, though where this is not the case. Not everyone is so urbane.

As a teacher, I can say with certainty that names have gotten so bizzare these days that it is highly unlikely that any kid is going to feel comfortable throwing stones at other people’s names.

I absolutely love the name Cora. It’s an old name…I just looked it up on the Social Security Names database, and it was the 15th most popular name in 1880

Also, FYI, it is the name of the countess on Downton Abbey. My husband and I love the show, and the actress is so beautiful

Please join us in the 21st century. When was the last time you heard anybody object to a name being “different”? Half of the kids in the class have a name invented out of whole cloth.

I actually do have a 7-year-old son named Ignatius and a 5-year-old son named Bonaventure, and nobody under 40 has ever batted an eyelash at hearing their names.

I also know four Sebastians, a Cyprian, two Augustines, an Aquinas, a Cornelius, a Napoleon, and two Perpetuas, not to mention about ten different Old Testament names.

This post is full of awesome I’m so happy to hear that others appreciate the really old Catholic names too! I was discussing the name Benedict with my husband the other day, and although we really like it, I was concerned that it might be too old fashioned. We also like the old Celtic saint names (Declan is a front runner right now).

Um…honoring one’s parents doesn’t mean that you are required to name children after them. There are plenty of people who find it odd to give a name of a living person to a baby, and there are plenty of families that then end up having confusion over who you’re talking to or about because there are too many people with that name (seriously, at my wedding, I had three Michael Kennys invited and no way to denote who was who on the seating cards, and I would have had 3 Sam Logans if my grandfather were still alive and my brother wasn’t deployed. Answering the phone at our house was a pain some days).

And while my mother and mother-in-law are lovely people, I don’t particularly like their names for use for my own children, and since neither my husband or I are the first-born sons (or, in my case, a son at all) on either side of our family who actually do have their father’s respective names, we don’t feel like we have the right to use them, either. Doesn’t mean I’m not honoring my parents at all. Doesn’t mean I’m not traditional, either.

Well if it’s a girl you could call her Tori. That would work. A boy maybe Troy.

They have TV and internet in Minnesota. Head on down to the local kindergarten and I’ll bet you’ll be shocked to see all of the creative inventions that are passing as names these days. My husband is from rural Wisconsin and they certainly have some doozies up there too!

Many N MN communities are composed of German immigrant families–several generations now, but truly, there are a lot of Gretas and Hermans, but very few Polycarps, I can guarantee it.

my little one is called Sophia maire, sophia is for a cousin of my grandmother who is a wonderful wonderful women who i adore and maire is for my grandmother.
