Blatantly false, obviously. Tell him to pick up a decent history book (by a reliable historian) and also refer him to the Early Church Fathers. As the years pass the message becomes distorted and corrupt with false doctrines so by the time the Catholic Church is founded in the 4th century, the message is different from what the bible teaches.
It looks like you are going to have to answer his purgatory challenge if he’s ever going to listen to you. I recommend coming right out and saying that the word “purgatory” cannot be found in the bible. (Along with a great many other words such as Trinity and Incarnation.) Point out that the word is just a name or description. The doctrine of purgatory can be found here:
1Corinthians 3
10. According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.
11. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
13. each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.
14. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.
15. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; **but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. **
Ask him what this means. It cannot refer to Hell, since no one who goes to Hell can be saved. But in Heaven there is no loss and no fire. So what is this refering to? It is referring to the state of purification a Christian sinner must go through before entering Heaven. Make sure that you make him realize the idea of purgatory as a place such as Heaven or Hell are a place. Emphasize the understanding of it as a state of purification.
