I was raised a Catholic (more or less) went to Catholic school etc. However, I have not been a practicing Catholic for years. Lately I have been inspired by (a certain guest the radio program is having in the near future). I’m pretty resistant and rebellious and have clinical or major depression or whatever. I thought going back to mass etc - becoming more spiritual would help. Well, I think after today again, this world pretty much (Edited)-more bad than good happens. How good anybody have faith in this world-the way it is today? Believe me I have heard all the rationalizations.

Debman0 - This world/society really does seem to suck right about now?

My own situation - I find that my faith grows in direct opposition to what has become of our society today. Just think of the early church and especially the martyrs. The world in which they lived in wasn’t just bad, it was out to get them as Christians. And yet despite this, they found and believed in Him and were willing to suffer abuse and even death for their faith.

You say you are ‘resistant and rebellious’ (I am too LOL) well these can be seen as gifts from God. You can harness these gifts and have a faith which allows you to be resistant to the evils of the world and rebellious to those forces which allow unspeakable tragedies to occur.

I pray that you find your faith as I pray for those families that have suffered evil today.

It’s not so much that this world looks like it’s going to hell in a hand basket…it’s putting our trust…faith…hope…not in what is going on in this world…but in a God who holds the future in His Hands.

Faith is living in trust…not blind obedience. We should be able to trust…doubt…seek…rail at God in anger at what is going on in our world…and when we are emotionally spent…we rest in His Shadow.

It’s not a matter of sitting quietly back and holding our tongue…He already knows the deepest parts of our hearts. You can’t shock God…He will listen to anything you have to say…and He understands.

If your heart searches beyond rationalizations to grasping desperately for truth, you are on a very good path to finding Christ. 🙂

In my desperation for answers in what I experienced as a chaotic existence, I reached out to Christ, and he helped me through the situation. Before that I was agnostic.

Prayer is key. :gopray:

The world is fallen. It can be disgusting, perverse, and evil. But why would I not have faith because of that? Could you expound?

The earliest Christians we are told lived in the Catacombs and were fed to the lions. That is sad. In America at times, we have had it very good but obviously, can be very lax in how we as a country act. Let’s not forget, many have given their lives for freedom and we must act responsibly.

I don’t have any faith in the world, never did, I have faith in God. Why do bad things happen; because we were given free choice.

please remember that the evil, or good, that people do comes from free will.
God gave us free will, choose light, or darkness (as the bible says choose life, or death). And he cannot violate that right. And some choose darkness, that is why this happens, because satan is here on earth prowling around like a lion. NOW is the time to have faith.

I’m not trying to ‘scare you’ back to the church, but I hope this helps

I am somewhat a rebellious person, in the sense that the world is so far from God, consumed in riches, sex, drugs, getting drunk, (I have heard the term the ‘culture of death’ used) that I choose to be a rebel, rebellion for me is to have faith in the Lord which many have lost, stay Chaste, and stay away from any drugs. I see that as true rebellion, because the world says to put yourself first, pre marital sex, drugs, drunkness, and staying clean for me is rebellion.

Please do not think I am putting myself on a pedestal, I am still a sinner and struggle with many things, sometimes even my faith.
I hope you see what I mean.

I would feel much the same as you, if I were putting my faith in the world or humanity. But I’m not. My faith is in God, His Church, and His Salvation.

I am sorry for your hurt. Please know that you are loved.

This is the dreariest day I can remember, we’ve had other bad days, 9/11 was an attack, I remember somewhat Columbine and of course, last Summer, the theater shooting but this is absolutely shocking. It can’t be put in perspective but we can pray.

Yes, more bad than good happens in this world, because we are in the middle of the “culture of death,” which respects nobody.

You’re being called home because it is home - or as close as we can get outside of Heaven.

Comfort is here, even if it is only that “this, too, shall pass.” It is in knowing that Jesus knows and loves all souls, individually: all our little quirks, our failings, our victories, our joys, our grief, our bodily pain. And, if we listen to Him, we can hear His love, even through all the tumult of this world.

As a fellow sufferer from depression, let me share some hard-won wisdom: Take your meds, see your doctors, go to confession, and receive the Eucharist as often as possible. The Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the best antidepressant there is.

“For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, forgive us our sins, and those of the whole world.”

With great compassion,

…heard this one?:

‘…guns don’t kill people…’

Well, if guns don’t kill people why are the news agencies not reporting that millions have died due to over stuffing themselves or by laughing too hard while watching an actual comedy?

People kill people and they use guns to do it because government, manufacturers, and distributors are more concerned with the huge moneys they get from easy-access-guns than with keeping ordinary citizens safe from criminals and the criminally negligent consumers who are constantly using guns to bolster their ego as they become the executioners of those people they deem weak or expendable.

Evil does seem to outdo good because the news agencies are not interested in reporting anything but the morbid and disastrous… today, how many millions went about their lives with little or no serious hinderance? …how many thousands of these were covered in the news?

…there’s a word for what you may be feeling: dispair.

Satan wants every single Believer to embrace the world’s malcontents… to give up on themselves and everyone around them… to blame God for man’s rebelliousness and to buy such philosophy as that disseminated by hollowood and its satellites (“takes evil to do good”) so that everyone would become paralyzed in their desperation and allow evil to conquer Good!

I pray that the Holy Spirit may inspire you to seek the good in you and to bring God’s Way to those around you!

…well what about the Russian school children? (Beslam elementary school children: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beslan_school_hostage_crisis – HBO made a documentary on it) where depraved murderers took over an elementary school, pooled the children into a gym and rigged bombs (fire bombs) all over the place… many were killed after living hours in fear and desperation… evil will attempt to shatter not only temporal lives but the Spirit of God that resides in us all!

I have no rationalizations. I have a few facts: God is, life’s Eternal, it’s the nature of reality as we quaintly call it to be horrible and I’ll be happy to move on when the time comes.

I’m not sure what the conditions on earth have to do with faith in God. He didn’t call it “heaven” did He?

You know, it really can feel that way. And in a lot of ways, it’s true that more bad than good happens. But at the end of a day like today (and I assume you’re talking about Connecticut), we need to stop and take a breath, and then really look at the world and ourselves.

The fisrt thing to remember is that God did not make or will the bad things to happen. Sinful, evil, sick people did. There has always been evil in the world that we have known. The human family, despite being “very Good” in God’s eyes, and being the object of His love, has done a fairly poor job of reciprocating that love sometimes. Today is a glaring example of that. For my own part (and I, for the record am a young man, unmarried, with no choldren of my own) am sick over it. There is physical pain in my heart over it, as though there is a gaping hole inside me right now. There is a part of my mind that says, “This is too terrible. It’s too much.”

But then I remember why I am feeling this pain. It’s because of the empathy and the compassion that God has blessed me with. This is not suffering that I feel because of myself, but rather on behalf of those whose lives have been utterly shattered today. And I know that the horrifying ugliness that I feel in my heart right now is a gift from God.

What remindeds me of this is the crucifix that hangs on my bedroom wall. The whole of God’s mercy reaches a fever pitch right there, in Jesus Christ crucified. Jesus willingly underwent the pain of the Cross–pain and suffering which is utterly unimaginable to a great many people–so that the bonds of sin and death might be broken. And it worked. He did it! We tend to forget this when we cast about for answers to the problems with our lives that vex us the most–namely today, why was such terror unleashed on children?–but Jesus is not simply one good spiritual philosopher whose teachings and influence merit equal weight with any other philosophy or spiritual tradition. Everything in our lives as Christians centers around who Jesus is, and Jesus, in His words, is the Ressurection and the Life.

My ability to have faith lies right here, in all of this. Now, I may not have articulated it properly tonight, as I myself am in a somewhat dark place. But it will get better.

Right underneath the crucifix in my bedroom is an icon of the Ressurection. I think that epitomizes it for me. Yes, there is sin and evil in the world and yes, it can rip our lives to shreds sometimes. But in order for us to be able to put our lives back together, God became Incarnate, and He became sin on the Cross, to die for us, so that we may live.

Hi, Ruthie!

…you’ve said a mouthful… it is not just temporal meds that can help us… we are a simple step away from the Divine Medic (the Sacrament of Reconciliation)–the One that can not only heal our wonds and infirmities but Give us Spiritual Sustenance… as people (both laity and clergy) continue to emulate the world, reject the Sacraments and the Blood and Body of Christ, evil strangles the human will and abilities… as the Eucharist (both the consumption and adoration) is restored in the Church life and health is restored to both the individual and the Body of Christ… why does man resist God?

…with you I pray:

“For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, forgive us our sins, and those of the whole world.”

Well, I think Jesus was resistant and rebellious. Jesus also would agree that more bad than good happens- “Whoever hates their life in this world will inheret it eternal life”.

John of the Cross, Thomas a Kempis, Francis of Assisi, pretty much ALL the saints had some kind of depression. Having faith in Jesus means NOT having faith in the world. Contumptus mundi- contempt for the world- is the beginning of faith in God. “Whoever loves the world has not the love of the Father in the them”.

debmand0 in Christ,

We are all somewhat rebellious and we are weak in doing what is right. Clinical depression will make life’s struggles all the more difficult. The most important thing that we can do is turn everything over to the Lord, and we must submit ourselves fully to his body the Church. C.S. Lewis expressed it something like this: “We must raise the white flag of surrender within the rebel fortress that is our heart.” That is so true.

Complete surrender is a sweet and hope filled act that frees us from all attempts to control that which we have no control over. It likewise enlightens us to God’s will. Knowing and following God’s will is the only thing that will bring peace to our souls. We may never have an easy life filled with comfort and wealth, but we will have that which is of lasting value and gives us the eternal-loving relationship with God for which we were made.

Patrick Coffin on Catholic Answers Radio often says: “Be a saint…what else is there?” Think about that. After all, this life may be miserable, but it is relatively short. The Lord is seeking you out with open arms.

I will pray for you.

God bless.
