This my sound a little like a rant and be long-winded, but I do not have a lot of time to make this shorter. I am a 17 year-old girl with a bad relationship with her mother. I am good at school, but I do not have any personal interests, hobbies, or any skills and I have been trying for the past few years to find something, you know, pretty typical adolescent stuff. I sometimes look though baking books and I would love to learn how to bake good things from scratch. The thing is, my Mom will not let me bake anything that is not out of a box, which I already have done plenty of times before. Mom basically does not want me to go buy ingredients for something that is not guaranteed to work. It is a waste of money to her, but it is not: people learn by trial and error.
And we are not teetering on financial ruin, so there is no need to discourage me. If I want to go out with a classmate, Mom is willing to give me a small fortune for the outing. And I usually do not want to, Mom pressures me into going out with people even though I do not have anything to talk about while with them. And Dad often asks me if I want to go on a trip anywhere I like and he is willing to be generous. But I decline the offers because I already travel enough with the family and I just want small things. I basically want to learn to do something independently, to have something to be proud of, to have a skill to carry with me the rest of my life. And I am aiming for such a practical skill at that.
Whenever I want to set my own goals, Mom discourages me. She tells me that American food only looks colorful, but that’s about it (both parents are from Poland, I was born in America). But, Mom will not make me make anything thing from scratch Polish or not. Last time I made cupcakes from scratch, Mom was screaming at me that I would destroy her kitchen. But they turned out fine and my half-brother, who was visiting that day, complimented me on them and is still alive after having four. But, Mom still tries to hold my hand with everything, sometimes usurping my work as I just sit there and measure flour. She always believes that I will make a mess and watches me with whatever I am doing. I have told her that it is annoying, her watching is like having some specter hovering nearby, but she will not let loose even though I am nervous.
Tomorrow, my parish is sponsoring a meal at a Catholic Charities soup kitchen and our youth minister is letting anyone interested bring dessert. I seized at the opportunity. Mom is letting me buy pastry mix, but she wonders why I would ever want to make anything from scratch since it is so inconvenient and expensive. Well, I have money but I hate the attitude Mom has. I want to do things because they are hard, not because they are easy. That is how I am with my classes, and this is how I want to be with everything else. One thing that makes me mad about the American mainstream is that so much is jettisoned for the sake of convenience. I do not trust things from the store shelf because with all the additives and extra sugar, they are usually second-rate at best, diluted poison at worst. To be able to bypass all of that would make me feel empowered. The Polish pastries my family is used to do not come in quick-assemble format and I love that. To think that Mom would be willing to buy it in a box, if available, is something akin to treason. And it might be an inconvenience to her, but I want to bring this on myself.
I guess I am not quite sure what I am asking, I just want to be able to learn how to do something that I have wanted to in for a while. My aunt loves to bake, but her schedule makes it hard to get together. I have another acquaintance from school I can meet with, but she is not a good baker so it is blind leading the blind. Please, no one dismiss this as one isolated emotional incident; I have written about problems with my mother here before and the atmosphere generated in the house is hard to live with. And my Dad is probably taking this all the hardest. Dad always wants to help whenever he sees me upset no matter what the cost. But, I have never told him and, I do not think I can, that there comes a time when a girl wants things that her daddy cannot buy. My Dad cannot buy me competence in anything. He may help me by supplying me, nothing he can do can counteract Mom’s disapproval. She acts on her own accord and my Dad is rather helpless even though he notices the instances when Mom bashes my confidence and makes me feel guilt for ever desiring something that she does not desire for me.
She loves shopping and hates the fact that I do not like to shop. I am actually more frugal than she is. If I receive money for anything, I am too afraid to treat myself to anything and I just hide it away. My Mom sometimes takes it upon herself to treat me with something I really do not care for like new hand bags, shoes, and clothes. When I am sad, she sometimes shows me bits and pieces of my inheritance in hope of cheering me up: her purses, jewelry, fine china, and all such nice things. But, none of it is something that I earned. Mom is disappointed in her only other child and plans to give almost everything to me, but I feel as though she is conditioning me to be something that I am not sometimes.
If I offended anyone, that was not my intent, I do not support any of the views mentioned that my Mom holds that might be considered offensive. Thanks to anyone how bothered to read all of this and any advice, prayers, etc. would be appreciated. Pardon any typos, I already spent more time on this than I should and am losing sleep for it. Thanks.
