Turk who shot Pope John Paul II seeks Polish citizenship
By SUZAN FRASER – 1 day ago

(excerpt)

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The Turkish gunman who shot and wounded Pope John Paul II is applying for Polish citizenship because he wants to live in the country of the late pontiff, whom he called his “spiritual brother.”

But the Polish Foreign Ministry said the chances of Mehmet Ali Agca getting citizenship are “minimal” since he hasn’t provided any “good service” to John Paul’s mostly Catholic homeland.

I did not readily see this story posted in the news section.

Talk about forgiveness!

I apologize Mark, I do not know the answer to your question. I would assume not if we went back to Turkey but he warned Pope Benedict XVI not to go to Turkey but He must have.

I didn’t know this Agca has been out of prison for awhile, but it seems he has been per the wikipedia article:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehmet_Ali_A%C4%9Fca

(A bit of a long statement on that page, one can go and read).

The letter to the present Pontiff had this statement that I consider odd at least:

“Then you must return to your native land (Germany) and in your place an Italian cardinal can be elected Pope, possibly Tettamanzi or Bertone.”

It’s not an issue of forgiveness. It’s an issue of policy, the policy that applies to him applies to others applying for Polish citizenship too.

And that I’m guessing is, there has been no good service done to the country.
