The thing that I find upsetting about this is the leaders of this country don’t even bother to acknowledge his arrival especially when he was invited over there by a religious leader in Patriarch Bartholomew I. Goes to show you the hatred towards Christians over there.

The secular government in Turkey isn’t that accommodating to Moslems either. Moslem girls are forbidden to wear veils to school, and the government does nothing to support that faith in other ways.

Yes, the government in 1971 even went so far as to close down all religious based schools of higher education, in an attempt try to keep down Muslim radicalism. To be even-handed the authorities also closed the Orthodox seminary of Halki. Pressure to re-open this seminary figures into the controversy to admit Turkey to the EU.

Turkey has a secular goverment but is a heavily Muslim country with its own share of problems with Islamic fundamentalists. There’s been a lot of religion-driven violence in Turkey. The furor over the Pope’s speech last month is still hot there, and they can avoid inciting Muslim emotions by welcoming him as a head of state instead of the head of a Christian Church.

I wonder if HH will get to see the Dervishes in their amazingly graceful performance. I suspect not since their dance has religious connotations.

Queen Elizabeth II, when she visited Saudi Arabia as Head Of State, was granted the honor by the Saudi Government to be an “Honory Man”, Governments do strange things
I think Turkey will in this visit show the world their real colors when the Pope visits. That’s all I’m saying. This is no ordinary visit, so I think people will be watching how both sides behave very closely.

We should all pray for the Pope’s safety. While not publicized much in the popular press, there have been numerous death threats, even before his September speech. In fact one Turkish author wrote a “novel” where the holy father is assinated on this very trip. This novel is appratently quite popular and is part of a genre of anti-Christian and anti-Catholic writings.

Please pray for our holy father’s safety.

I am praying for Pope Benedict’s safety BUT I would like to see this trip cancelled :ehh: !
.

I do not think death threats would be a sufficient reason for the Holy Father to cancel a trip. In our day we forget the persecution that early Christians experienced. In fact I believe nearly all of the first 10 popes were martyred.

While I pray that the Holy Father remains safe, I do not think the thrreat of a mere physical death would be sufficient grounds to surrender to islamic intimidation (lack of capitalization intentional).
