ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A Turkish Airlines plane carrying more than 100 passengers from Tirana, Albania, to Istanbul, was hijacked Tuesday to protest a planned visit of the pope to Turkey next month, airline officials said.

The plane later landed at Italy’s Brindisi airport.

The two Turkish hijackers told authorities they are prepared to turn themselves in, said Candan Karlitekin, chairman of Turkish Airlines’ board of directors. “The passengers are not under any threat. They will surrender, they declared that they will surrender the moment they hijacked the plane,” Karlitekin said, adding no one was hurt.

Private NTV television, quoting unnamed security officials, reported that the plane was hijacked by two Turks to protest Pope Benedict XVI’s planned visit to Turkey next month.
