spoke directly with the priest, today.

All is well.

That’s all I have to say on the subject.

I understand your annoyance. I felt the same when a priest rushed out on confession 10 minutes before the end, leaving a long line of people waiting. And I felt very happy when a different priest, who had to stop in order to prepare for Mass, told the four or five of us in line that he would hear confessions after the Mass although that wasn’t normally confession time, so we could have another chance.

Having said that, as others have mentioned, priests are human, he needs a few minutes to compose himself for Mass, he may have felt sick or needed a bathroom break or to return an urgent message. Offer it up, don’t dwell on it, and if this is your only option for confession (no other churches or times) try making an appointment.

Masstimes doesn’t update on its own. I always double check their info on the parish website because sometimes the times have changed and no one updated the app. I have personally updated some parishes in the app and I don’t even work for those parishes, I just showed up there and discovered the app times were way off.

If time is really critical I’d suggest calling the church because some parishes don’t update their own websites either.

Even if mass started a minute late, the daily mass starting on time is more important than my state of grace?
You can be returned to a state of grace before confession if you make an act of perfect contrition. (see below)
When you commit a mortal sin, the only way to be returned to grace prior confession is to have perfect contrition.

This is taken from St. Louis de Montfort, and paraphrased and expanded from other sources.

Think of Jesus hanging on the cross. Struggling to breath. Everyone around Him mocking Him. Covered in blood and in agonizing pain. Submerged in mental anguish and humiliation. Know that you have done this to Him, your God, your greatest benefactor. The One who gave you life and keeps you alive. The one who prepared a place for you in eternal bliss. Instead of loving and thanking Him, you crucified and insulted Him. This should move you to perfect contrition for your sins. Now say a heartfelt Act of Contrition, meaning every word. Resolve to go to confession as soon as possible. You will be restored to God’s Grace, and all eternal punishment of your sin will be removed. You must go to confession first before Communion though.

Please spread the word about perfect contrition!

Well, if Mass begins at 12 noon, perhaps they have an associate pastor who usually says Mass while another wraps up confessions. Maybe the associate is on vacation, is sick, was on a death call, it is always best to give the benefit of the doubt.

I suggest you may need to rethink your approach to the Sacraments.
Somewhere along the line you have turned a divinised human reality into push button, clockwork mechanics, respect, rights and duties devoid of relationship and context.

Everybody here gets it that Confession 11.30am, Mass 12.00pm means the priest will do confessions up until he heeds to have a pit stop and get ready for Mass. Everybody here knows that 11.30-11:50am is the best you can hope for with him in the Confessional. Anything extra is generosity. If he doesn’t like you then that is cause for concern only if he refuses to hear your confession at just times. Generosity is his gift not your right.

Clearly the confessional line was too long on this occasion and couldn’t be coped with given the normal custom. Most of the time he likely sits there reading the breviary or saying the rosary waiting for people who never come at the advertised times.

If you think this happens regularly suggest to the PCouncil that Confessional time starts at 11:20am.

Am I unreasonable in thinking their (long established) schedule should reflect that?

The sound proofing ain’t the best at this old school confessional, and I could plainly hear him giving penance and absolution in a hearty and cheery tone, yet his tone and demeanor noticeably turned sour when he made eye contact with me and plainly saw that I was the last in line. That’s when things went south with my own mood.

Even the dogs get the crumbs…
Well… should priest try to schedule this a little better (assuming that they have more than 1 priest), yes.

In an ideal world, they would have 1 priest scheduled for mass at noon and other priest scheduled to hear confessions.

However, in today’s world, priests are stretched thin. I’m sure there wasn’t a priest sitting in the rectory watching TV instead of hearing confessions.

Please try to let this go.

If it makes you feel better, I once asked a priest after mass if he would hear my confession. He said, “no, confessions are at 4PM on Saturdays.” Now, I was very disappointed and pretty annoyed. But I got over it and went to confession the next day at another church.

God bless

Just another example of why I see private confession doing more harm than good.

My wife and myself have an issue with a priests who told me what my wife and he spoke about in the confessional. It was after he gave her absolution and did not involve sin, but she felt it was in spoken in confidence in the confessional and he should not have told me about it.

General absolution during the Penitential Rite at Mass.

Those who need to speak with a priest can make and appointment with their parish priest.

Jim

And no one would EVER go to Confession. Ever. We as a species do the bare minimum if it is uncomfortable.

I should’ve wrote, the Penitential Act at the Introductory Rite at Mass.

Today, I got there at 11:40am. There was a line, but it was moving at a decent clip.
I was just thinking about this some more… My Cathedral also has Confession on M-F from 11:30 to Noon. I know Mondays tend to be more busy confession wise (for some reason) than the other days of the week; esp the Monday before First Friday.

So perhaps, at the Church you went to, it’s the same thing.

Please just try to go again tomorrow, or another day this week, and offer up your frustration.

God Bless

If I were you, I would ask your question the priest in private, and see what he has to say. Explain your struggles, and also that you narrowed down your confession to thirty seconds, something he might not consider. You need not tell the priest that it was him you’re talking about if you don’t like, but maybe if you ask soon, he might remember you anyway.

They’re not going now.

Two pastors ago, he cancelled scheduled Confession on Saturdays, because he was sick of sitting in the confessional week after week with no penetants.

Sorry Jim, but I’m still not following you.

What does the Penitential Act have to do with a priest cutting off confession to celebrate mass?

One could argue that the Pentitential Act might make some people think they don’t have to go to confession, but I’ve never heard it being a reason for long lines, a priest cutting off confession, or a priest potentially breaking the seal of confession?

Sorry, I’m still totally lost 🤔
